Abstract

A warning light system for a vehicle that warns other road users that the vehicle is slowing down e.g. pre braking lights. The warning light system comprises a warning light L2 that is included in a vehicles brake light housing at the rear of a vehicle, wherein the warning light L2 is an array of LEDs that surround the brake light L1. The warning light is activated when the driver releases the accelerator pedal in order to apply the brakes. The warning lights only illuminate when the vehicle is moving, and are disabled when the vehicle is not moving or when the accelerator pedal is engaged by the driver. Preferably electronic circuitry sense the rotation of the propeller shaft or any other rotating part between the gear box and the wheels. The array of lights may be circular or rectangular in shape.

Two - in - one Brake Light System.
Description
Assume that two vehicle are moving one behind the other. At a certain high speed level if the driver of the front vehicle applies brakes to slow down or stop suddenly, the driver of the rear vehicle may not be able to apply brakes quickly as he doesn’t get any sign prior to the application of brakes by the front driver. The situation may be more critical when the distance between two vehicles are insufficient to avoid an accident.
With the system proposed, as soon as the driver of the front vehicle releases the accelerator pedal in order to apply brakes, a warning signal is given to the driver of the rear vehicle to slow down his speed. Since it is not possible incorporate a modification to the brake light or to use a lamp of different color on the same brake light due to regulatory restrictions, the new innovative proposal suggested here uses an array of Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) surrounding each brake as the prior to braking warning indication.
Red colour LED arrays are used for the prior to braking warning lights (20) and these lights (20) are formed as a border surrounding the normal brake lights so that the brake light works as a two-in-one warning device. The shape of the pair of lights can be circular or rectangular depending on the shape of the normal brake lights. The shapes are show in FigE
This warning is enabled when the vehicle is moving at a certain minimum speed only. Thus the warning is not active when the vehicle is not moving even if the accelerator pedal is free. An electronic circuit (15) “E” is incorporated in the system to get this special function.
The principle of the proposed system is illustrated in Fig. 2. BPS (13) is a Single pole, 1-way normally open type switch which is operated by the brake pedal. APS (16) is a Single pole 1-way normally closed type switch operated by the Accelerator pedal. E (15) is an electronic control circuit which detects the movement of the vehicle.
When the vehicle is moving at any speed above zero r.p.m. the rotation of the propeller shaft or any rotating part of the vehicle between gear box and tyres is sensed by a Magnetic type Sensor. When the vehicle is moving the sensor generates a train of pulses due to the rotation of said part and these pulses are fed to the electronic unit. With this pulse train the electronic unit is enabled and the Relay (19) is energized to provide electrical path to (20) LED array.
While driving, the normally closed APS switch (16) is kept opened by the accelerator pedal, the APS (16) does not provide power to light up the pair of prior to warning lights (20). When the accelerator pedal is released by the driver prior to braking, the NC contacts of the switch APS (16) are closed and the pair of prior to braking light (Led array) (20) light up to warn the driver of vehicle moving behind. Immediately after releasing the accelerator pedal and when the brake pedal is pressed, the N.O. contacts of switch BPS are closed. Closing of N.O. contacts light up the normal pair of brake lights (14) to indicate the application of brakes. Prior to Braking lights and the normal braking lights are illuminated simultaneously (as a One Light).
The prior to braking lights (20) goes off when the vehicle comes to rest after braking.
This concept can be applied to any 4 wheeled, 3-wheeled vehicles and motorbikes.

Claims (9)

Claims:
1. The warning light is included with the normal brake light housing LED array surrounding the normal brake lights so that the whole brake light functions as a two-in-one warning device.
2. The LED array named as prior to braking warning light up when the driver releases the accelerator pedal in order to apply brakes.
3. When the brake pedal is pushed by the driver the right and left prior to braking warning lights and the normal braking lights are illuminated simultaneously.
4. If the brakes are applied just to slow down, the driver again pushes the accelerator pedal and prior to braking lights goes off.
5. As in claim-1, when the accelerator pedal is released prior to braking warning lights light up if the vehicle is moving only.
6. Prior to braking warning lights are disabled when the vehicle is not moving.
7. To achieve the function in claim 5, an electronic sensing circuit is incorporated in this system for sensing the propeller shaft or any other rotating part of the vehicle between gear box and the wheels.
8. When the vehicle is completely stooped no prior to braking warning lights light up as the propeller shaft or any other rotating part between gear box and wheels is not rotating which is sensed by the electronic circuit as in claim 6.
9. This concept can be applied to any 4-wheeled, 3-wheeled vehicle and motor bikes.
