Abstract

255,849. Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Luke, G. E.). July 23, 1925, [Convention date]. Dynamos and motors, cooling and ventilating: enveloping in special media.-In a dynamoelectric machine which is cooled by hydrogen or other combustible gas flowing in a closed system, external ventilating means are provided for drawing off the air surrounding the machine and prevent it, and any of the gas which may leak into it from the machine, from diffusing into the air of the room in which the machine is placed. In the form shown, the machine 1 has a closed-circuit combustible gas cooling- system comprising fans 4, 5 on the rotor which direct the gas through the air gaps, radially outwards into a casing 11, over the outlet cooler 13 and into the space between the machine casing 7 and an outer casing 2. Surrounding the casing 2 is another spaced casing 14 having an exit, with or without exhausting means 16, and inlet ports 17. Air is continuously drawn between the casings 2, 14 and carries away any gas which may leak from the inner closed gas system. The pressure of the inner combustible gas is preferably kept higher than that between the casings 2, 14 so that infiltration of air into the combustible gas is prevented.
