A Carrying Device
The present invention relates to a carrying device and relates particularly but not exclusively to a carrying device for facilitating the convenient carrying of items in a home or gardening environment.
It is often the case, particularly in a home or gardening environment, that items need to be picked up and then carried for disposal or otherwise to a different location. By means of example, in a gardening environment, it can be the case that plants require deadheading. This requires the user to move around the garden, cutting the flower heads from plants that have finished blooming as they go, and then placing the removed flower heads in a storage container that the user carries with them.
In a similar fashion, in a gardening environment, it can be the case that the user moves around the garden to pick fruit or vegetables, and then places the fruit or vegetables in a storage container that the user carries with them.
The simultaneous carrying of the storage container and the dead heading of the plants, or the simultaneous carrying of the storage container and the picking of fruit or vegetables, can be difficult to achieve, and as a result it can be the case that the user attempts to dead head the plants or pick the fruit or vegetables using one hand only, whilst holding the storage container in their other hand. Alternatively, a user may attempt to deadhead or pick fruit without using a container and therefore hold all the gathered articles in their hand.
As a further alternative, the user can use both hands to either remove the dead heads or pick the fruit or vegetables, which is undoubtedly advantageous, whilst periodically lifting and moving the storage container as required as they move around the garden.
Whilst facilitating the use of both hands, the requirement to periodically lift and move the storage container as the user moves around the garden can be inconvenient and can result in the user having to bend a lot, potentially leading to back problems .
Whilst it is known to provide storage pouches that can be worn around the waist of a user, into which the user can place the removed plant heads or the fruit or vegetables, these can be cumbersome and inconvenient. In particular, in the event that the user wishes to dispose of the dead heads of the plants, or perhaps wash the fruit or vegetables, it becomes necessary to remove the storage pouch from around the waist of the user, which can be time consuming and inconvenient. Furthermore, many such storage devices and pouches are difficult to clean meaning that they are limited in their use.
Preferred embodiments of the present invention seek to overcome or alleviate the above described disadvantages of the prior art.
According to the present invention there is provided a carrying device for attachment to an item of clothing of a user, comprising: (i) a loop portion;
(ii) an attachment means fixed to said loop portion, said attachment means being selectively attachable to an item of clothing; and (iii) a container being removably locatable within said loop portion to retain said container within said loop portion, wherein when said container is in situ within said loop portion, said loop portion substantially circumscribes said container.
Having a container that is removably inserted into a loop portion which is clipped to clothing provides the advantage that the container is independent from the rest of the carrying device and in particular independent from the attachment means. This facilitates the quick and easy removal of the container from the rest of the carrying device, to dispose of the dead heads of the plants or rinse the fruit or vegetables for example, without the requirement to remove the complete carrying device including the attachment means, from the clothing of the user.
This provides the further advantage that, when the container is removed from the loop portion, it can be used completely independently; for example, it can be conveniently used to store the fruit or vegetables in a refrigerator, or it can be used to cook the fruit or vegetables in a microwave oven.
The container may be retained within said loop portion by means of friction.
This provides the advantage that the container can be quickly and easily located and retained within the loop portion whilst the user attends to their task, and then similarly, quickly and easily removed when required.
The attachment means may be a clip.
This provides the advantage that the carrying device is securely maintained in position on the clothing of the user, whilst the user is wearing the carrying device.
The container may be substantially rigid.
This provides the advantage that the container is maintained in an open position, to facilitate the quick and easy placement of items such as dead heads of plants, or fruit or vegetables, inside the container, without the user having to periodically open the container to do so.
This provides the further advantage that items such as fruit or vegetables placed inside the container are less likely to become damaged or bruised.
The container may be made from plastics material.
This provides the advantage that the container is easy to clean, when required, and that it is inexpensive to manufacture.
The loop portion may be made from flexible material.
This provides the advantage that the container can be quickly and easily located within the loop portion, when required.
This provides the further advantage that the carrying device is not bulky or cumbersome, particularly in the event that the container is not disposed within the loop portion.
The loop portion may be made from fabric.
This provides the advantage that the carrying device is inexpensive to manufacture.
This provides the further advantage that the retention of the container within the loop portion by means of friction is facilitated.
The loop portion may be made from neoprene.
This provides the advantage that the loop portion is durable. By using a stretchy material, such as neoprene, the loop is slightly stretched by the container when it is added into the loop. This applies a gripping force to the container making it unlikely to fall out of engagement with the loop for example when a user bends over.
The container may comprise an opening at its upper end when in situ within the loop portion.
The opening of the container may be defined by a periphery, whereby the periphery has a substantially reniform shape.
The periphery defining the opening of the container may have a concave edge and a convex edge opposite to the concave edge, the concave edge in use substantially fitting against a portion of the body of a user when the container is in situ in said loop portion.
The container may have a substantially reniform cross section .
In having a generally curved, reniform shape, when in situ in the loop portion, the container can effectively sit against the body of the user in a comfortable, compact and convenient fashion.
The loop portion may further comprise a reinforcing portion to provide support to the loop portion.
The reinforcing portion of the loop portion may be fixed to the attachment means.
The reinforcing portion may be shaped such as to substantially fit against a portion of the container, when the container is in situ in the loop portion.
The reinforcing portion may be curved in shape to substantially fit against the concave edge of the container.
This provides the advantage that the container, when in situ within the loop portion, can sit against the reinforcing portion of the loop portion in a compact and convenient fashion.
The reinforcing portion may be shaped such as to substantially fit against a portion of the body of a user, in use .
This provides the advantage that the reinforcing portion and hence the loop portion and the container, can sit against the body of a user in a comfortable, compact and convenient fashion.
Preferred embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only and not in any limitative sense, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a rear perspective view of a carrying device, showing hidden detail, in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention;
Figure 2 shows a rear view of a carrying device, showing hidden detail, in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention;
Figure 3 shows a front perspective view of a carrying device in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention;
Figure 4 shows a front view of a carrying device in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention;
Figure 5 shows a cross sectional view along the line A-A from the side of a carrying device in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention;
Figure 6 shows a side view of a carrying device in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention;
Figure 7 shows a top plan view of a carrying device in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention; and
Figure 8 shows an exploded rear perspective view of a carrying device in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention.
With reference to the Figures, a carrying device 1 comprises a loop portion 3 comprising a loop of fabric such as neoprene, providing a flexible and yet durable solution to the user. It is however to be appreciated that the loop portion could alternatively be made from a more rigid material to provide instead a more robust annular framework to the carrying device
1.
The carrying device 1 also comprises an attachment means in the form of a clip 5, which is fixed to the loop portion 3, and which allows a user to selectively and securely attach the carrying device 1 to an item of their clothing such as a belt or the waistband of their trousers.
As can be clearly seen from Figures 1, 2, 5 and 8, the clip 5 comprises an inverted U-shaped rigid member having a first leg 5a fixed to the loop portion 3, and a second leg 5b which is free and which is biased towards the first leg 5a. In this way, in order to attach the carrying device 1 to the clothing of a user, the user slots the second leg 5b over their clothing to retain the carrying device 1 in position, whereby the clothing of the user is retained between the first leg 5a and the second leg 5b. The retention of the clothing of the user between the first and second legs 5a and 5b is further facilitated by means of an indentation 5c in the second leg.
The loop portion 3 also comprises a reinforcing portion in the form of a metallic plate 7, which is fixed to the loop portion 3 and is disposed between the loop portion 3 and the clip 5. The metallic plate 7 provides added support to the loop portion 3 in the vicinity where the loop portion 3 is fixed to the clip 5. As can be seen from Figure 8 in particular, the clip 5 is fixed to the metallic plate 7 and hence the loop portion 3 by means of rivets 9.
The carrying device 1 also comprises a container 11 which can be slotted into the loop portion 3 in order to retain the container 11 within the loop portion 3 when required, and also quickly and easily removed from the loop portion 3 when required. As can be clearly seen from Figure 1 in particular, when the container 11 is disposed within the loop portion 3, the loop
- 8 portion 3 effectively surrounds the container 11, circumscribing the container 11 around its periphery. In view of the fabric nature of the loop portion 3, the container 11 is retained within the loop portion 3 by means of a frictional fit.
As can be seen from Figure 3 in particular, the loop portion is narrower at its front edge 3a, which further facilitates the disposal of the container within the loop portion 3. Further useful properties of neoprene used in the loop portion 3 are its ability to stretch and the high coefficient of friction of its surface. These properties allow the loop portion 3 to be slightly stretched by the container 11 as it is placed into the opening of the loop portion and it is the stretching resilience of the neoprene and the high coefficient of friction resulting from the use of the rubberised material which result in the above-mentioned friction fit.
It is to be appreciated that the container 11 is independent from the rest of the carrying device 1 and in particular it is independent from the clip 5, which allows for the user to remove the container 11 from the rest of the carrying device 1 quickly and easily, without being required to negotiate the removal of the clip 5 from their belt or waistband for example, in the event that they wish to empty the container 11.
As a result, in the event that the user is using the carrying device 1 in a gardening environment, for example for the purposes of removing dead heads from plants or picking fruit or vegetables, and the container 11 becomes full, they simply slip the container 11 from within the loop portion 3 to dispose of the dead heads of the plants or rinse the fruit or vegetables for example, without the requirement to remove the complete carrying device 1 including the clip 5 from their clothing. This further facilitates the use of the container 11 for the purposes of storing the fruit or vegetables which have been picked from the garden, in a refrigerator for example.
The container 11 is rigid, maintaining its shape whilst the user is wearing the carrying device 1. It can be made from any suitable material such as plastics material, and has a welldefined opening 13 at its upper end in use, which allows the user to conveniently fill the container 11 without having to periodically negotiate the opening of the container 11. The rigid nature of the container 11 also provides a degree of protection to the items within the container 11, for example, preventing any fruit inside the container 11 from becoming bruised or damaged.
The presence of the well-defined opening 13 and the use of plastics material in the structure of the container 11 facilitates the easy cleaning of the container 11.
As can be clearly seen from Figure 1 in particular, the opening 13 of the container 11 is defined by a reniform (kidney) shaped periphery 15 having a concave edge 17 and a convex edge 19 opposite to the concave edge 17. As well as having a reniform shaped opening 13, the container 11 as a whole has a reniform shape cross section across its width W. In this way, when the container 11 is in situ in the loop portion 3, and the carrying device 1 is in situ on a user, the concave edge 17 sits comfortably against the hip of a user, effectively fitting around a portion of the hip of the user in a comfortable, compact and convenient fashion.
In a similar fashion, the metallic plate 7, which sits between the container 11 and the clip 5 in use, is also curved, such that it fits against the concave edge 17 of the container 11 when the container 11 is disposed within the loop portion 3. Moreover, the curved nature of the metallic plate 7 also ensures that the metallic plate 7 fits against a portion of the user's hip, in use, in a comfortable, compact and convenient fashion.
It will be appreciated by persons skilled in the art that the above embodiment has been described by way of example only, and not in any limitative sense, and that various alterations and modifications are possible without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
