PAINTING ACCESSORY ASSEMBLY
This invention relates to a painting accessory assembly and in particular to a painting accessory tray adapted to store painting accessories and, in use, accommodate at least one liquid for use in the painting process.
Painting of surfaces for decoration and protection is carried out widely on a commercial and private basis, often referred to as “do-it-yourself’ or “DIY”. Typically a flowable surfacecoating such as paint, varnish, stain or the like is applied to a surface using a decorating implement for example a roller or a paint brush, which is brought into contact with the flowable surface-coating material and then the surface to which the material is to be applied. The terms “paint” and “painting” as employed herein refer to any flowable surface-material and its application to a surface and are employed for convenience to include paint, varnish, stain and the like. The decorating implement may be brought into contact with the flowable surface-coating material by dipping the implement into a supply of the material so as to load material onto the implement and then the loaded implement is brought into contact with the surface by transferring the loaded implement to the surface. The loaded implement is then passed across the surface to apply the flowable surface-coating to the surface.
In a typical painting process, the user will typically require a range of items or equipment, referred to herein as “painting accessories”, to carry out the painting operation and also to clean used decorating implements and other equipment and to store such items. For example, the user may require an implement to open a container of paint or the like to be applied, a stirring implement to agitate paint to prepare it for use, gloves, cloths, protective coverings, for example a dust sheet or plastic sheet, masking tape, cleaning wipes, materials to prepare the surface to be painted for example abrasive paper, water and solvent, for example white spirits, and a range of other items, commonly employed in painting processes.
The user, especially the private or domestic user may also need to gather a range of these items or equipment from trade or retail outlets or use household implements in the painting process. This may be time-consuming or, for the inexperienced, present difficulties in knowing what equipment or items may be required to carry out the painting process and to clean and store the equipment in a manner which renders it suitable for reuse in a subsequent painting operation and which allows the painting process to progress without interruption to acquire painting accessories which may have been forgotten or which the user may not have appreciated would be required on commencing the painting operation.
Once the painting process has commenced and the decorating implement, such as a paint brush, has paint applied to it, the elapse of time and management of the decorating implement are significant considerations due to the paint on the implement being likely to dry or cure if left for a prolonged period of inactivity. This may make recommencing the painting process difficult or may require cleaning or replacement of the decorating implement. Thus, inconvenience or difficulties may be encountered if the user has to stop the painting process in order to acquire items or equipment for example by returning to a retail outlet to acquire the forgotten items which the user may have been forgotten to assemble prior to commencing the painting process. Also, where the user may wish to interrupt the painting process for a short period, for example to take a break or to carry out other day-to-day activities, and then return the process, avoiding the paint on the used decorating implement drying out is important if complication and inconvenience in needing to clean the implement before recommencing painting is to be avoided.
Typically, a user may place the decorating implement in a container containing a suitable solvent for the paint but this requires the user to find a suitable container that is clean and able to receive the decorating implement. It is necessary also to charge the container with the solvent to a level where that part of the implement which receives the paint, such as the brushes or roller, is submerged to avoid the paint on the implement drying out and rendering it unusable. Depending on the shape and size of the container, excessive solvent may need to be used to ensure the operating part of the implement is submerged.
We have now devised a painting accessory assembly which provides a means of storing in a single place a range of implements and materials employed in the decorating or painting process and which facilitates the painting process by being adapted to store a portion of a liquid useful in the painting process or in cleaning the implements used in the painting process.
In a first aspect the invention provides a painting accessory tray comprising a tray having at least one recess adapted to store one or more painting accessories, a liquid storage container recess and a liquid storage container adapted to receive a liquid and having a liquid-tight closure and being configured so as to be storable within the liquid storage container recess wherein the tray is adapted to store the container predominantly within the liquid storage container recess in a stored configuration and is adapted to hold the liquid storage container in a second in use configuration in which the closure is located at the upper part of the container.
Suitably the liquid storage container is shaped such that it may lie within the liquid storage container recess and the container is located within the thickness of the tray such that the major part of the liquid container does not protrude proud of the upper surface of the tray. In one embodiment, the liquid storage container and its recess are shaped such that the container is held substantially wholly within the recess during storage.
The liquid storage container is preferably extends longitudinally and is a generally cylindrical profile. Preferably, the container is stored along one side of the tray and the length of the container is just under the length of the tray.
The liquid storage container may be constructed of any suitable material and plastics is preferred for ease of manufacture, low cost, ability to tailor the particular dimensions and apply functional or aesthetic features, for example a screw thread at one end for engagement with the liquid-tight closure. In a preferred embodiment, the container is constructed of a transparent plastics material to enable the user to observe the level of liquid in the container. If desired, measurement markings may be applied to the container to provide a means of quantitatively determining the amount of liquid in the container.
In one embodiment, the tray comprises two liquid storage container recesses and two liquid storage containers. Suitably one liquid container may be used to store water and the other liquid container may be used to store a solvent or cleaning product suitable for cleaning paint from the decorating implement. The containers may be provided with different markings for example colours or constructed of different coloured materials or have differently marked closures so the user may readily distinguish the two liquids and identify the con tents of the two containers.
The liquid storage container may be disposed in a stored configuration or an in-use configuration. In the in-use configuration, the liquid storage container is suitably in an upstanding configuration relative to the tray. In other words, the liquid storage container is preferably generally perpendicular to the tray in the in use configuration. When in the stored configuration, the liquid storage container is suitably generally parallel to the tray and lies predominantly within the liquid storage container recess predominantly within the thickness of the tray.
The liquid storage container may be held in its stored position and/or its in-use position by the liquid storage container recess and the container being dimensioned and constructed of a resilient material for example plastics, enabling a push fit. In another embodiment, the liquid storage container and the tray comprise complementary engagement means whereby the liquid storage container is movable between the stored and in use configurations. The liquid storage container should however be detachable from the tray to enable the liquid contents of the liquid storage container to be dispensed into a recess of the tray. After use, the liquid is suitably disposed of in a safe and environmentally responsible manner. If the volume of liquid in the container exceeds the capacity of the recess into which the liquid is to be disposed, any excess liquid is also suitably disposed of in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.
In a preferred embodiment, the liquid storage container is retained in the tray in its stored position and in its in use position using a holder. The holder comprises a locating recess for the liquid storage container which preferably grips the container in a push-fit manner. The holder preferably further comprises on its outer surface engagement means which engage with complementary engagement means in the tray, preferably located in the liquid storage container recess. Desirably, the complementary engagement means of the holder and the tray allow the container to be rotated between the stored and in use configuration, pivoting about the engagement means. As the container is manually moved between the two configurations, the holder pivots in concert with container. The holder is releasably securable to the tray.
The liquid-tight closure may be of any suitable liquid-tight design, for example a push-fit closure or a screw-cap closure. The closure in a preferred embodiment comprises a rigid rod which is affixed to or moulded as a part of the closure and when the closure is applied to the container, the rod is contained within the liquid storage container. The rod may be used as a stirrer for the paint or to remove lids from tins of paint. The rod may comprise an array of apertures along its length to facilitate stirring of the paint.
In a further embodiment, the closure may comprise a boss on its outer side which may be used to apply force to a lid of a paint tin to close and reseal the paint tin.
The tray may be of any shape and size but is suitably of a generally rectangular shape and has a top surface and a bottom surface separated by sidewalls. The sidewalls define the height or thickness of the tray and the at least one recess and the liquid storage container recess are located on and accessible from the top surface and extend into the thickness of the tray.
Preferably, the tray is of the same or similar dimensions to known paint trays which are typically rectangular in shape and have a partially ramped rectangular bottom surface and sidewalls which extend around the rectangular bottom surface forming a reservoir for holding paint, which is deeper towards one end of the tray and shallower towards the opposite end thereof.
The liquid storage container recess may be located at one side of the top surface of the tray, preferably against the longer side. Where the tray has two liquid storage container recesses, these are preferably disposed in parallel along the longer sides of the tray and towards the periphery of the upper surface. The liquid storage container recess may comprise engagement means for engagement with the liquid storage container or with a holder for the said container.
The number and shape of the one or more recesses may be selected according to the particular painting accessories one desires to accommodate. Suitably, the recess(es) is located along the longitudinally extending middle portion of the tray. Preferably there are two or more recesses located lengthways along the tray. The recesses may be used to store any painting accessories and suitably the painting accessory tray is provided for sale with a range of painting accessories typically employed, particularly for DIY painting applications.
The two or more lengthways recesses are suitably partitioned by walls of the same height as the sidewalls of the tray. One or more of the partition walls may extend upwardly of the surface to both partition adjacent recesses but also to provide a wall.
Painting typically involves the use of a roller or a paintbrush. The present invention is especially suitable for use with a paint brush. A paint brush typically comprises parallel bristles mounted in a handle via a ferrule and paint applied to the brush during use will typically remain on the bristles or may pass into the ferrule. The upstanding wall, as herein described, provides a means by which the painting process may be interrupted and the brush be placed in a liquid to prevent the paint on the brush drying out without the need to provide a separate container, and use excessive quantities of solvent that may be required dependent on the size of the container. The user accordingly has a self-contained apparatus enabling storage of painting accessories and enabling temporary interruption of the painting process without the need to provide separate items or equipment.
Accordingly, in use, a recess adjacent to the upstanding wall is suitably charged with a liquid suitable for cleaning the decorating implement and the wall is dimensioned such that the decorating implement may be placed with its painting surface or bristles in the liquid in the recess and with the handle of the implement resting on the upstanding wall. In this way, the user may temporarily place the decorating implement in the liquid or solvent and reduce the risk of paint on the implement drying during an interruption of the painting process.
The at least one recess may be subdivided by inclusion of a wall within a recess to provide two smaller recesses. In one preferred embodiment the tray comprises at least three recesses in addition to the one or two liquid storage container recesses. The at least three recesses preferably comprises at least two, especially three, square or rectangular recesses located along the longitudinal axis of the tray and at least one, especially two elongate recesses extending longitudinally along the tray and being suitable for storage of an elongate item for example a cleaning implement, for example a cleaning brush. The recesses are suitably configured such that the painting tray is supplied with a range of items suitable for use in a painting process and are suitably selected from gloves, cloths, masking tape, cleaning wipes, a cleaning implement, for example a cleaning brush, materials to prepare the surface to be painted for example abrasive paper. The painting accessory tray may also be provided with small protective coverings, for example a dust sheet or plastic sheet folded into a footprint which fits within the footprint of the tray.
The painting tray may be provided with water and solvent charged in the one or more liquid storage containers.
The invention provides in another aspect a painting accessory tray according to the first aspect of the invention in which the liquid storage container comprises a liquid.
The liquid is suitably a solvent or water and is selected according to the intended paint that the user will use thereby providing the user with a self-contained kit comprising the painting accessory tray and solvent in the liquid-tight container. During use the liquid is suitably dispensed into a recess and the decorating implement used in the painting process may be left with the paint-containing part located in the liquid in the recess.
In a preferred embodiment, the tray comprises a narrow or elongate recess adapted to receive the edge of a lid from a paint container such that the lid is held by the sides of the recess orthogonally and preferably generally vertically relative to the tray. Upon opening the paint container, the lid may be located in the recess in a generally upstanding manner thereby reducing the risk that the lid may be mislaid or unintentionally be touched causing inadvertent transfer of paint on the underside of the lid or to any items close to or within the working area. Preferably the elongate recess is disposed lengthways along the tray and extends for at least half the length of the tray, preferably substantially the entire length of the tray.
The tray is suitably supplied with a covering to ensure the retention of the painting accessories during supply. The covering may be a flexible plastics material for example shrink-wrapped over the tray thereby to retain the painting accessories in place. In one embodiment, the tray may have a solid lid in the form of a plastic tray which may then itself be detached and inverted for use as a paint tray. The lid may be configured such that the inside of the lid presents a ramped surface for use in a painting process as described herein in relation to conventional painting trays.
The lid may comprise surface formations, for example one or more circular depressions or a protrusion such as a raised circular lip to allow a standard sized paint container, for example 1 litre, 2.5 litre or 5 litre containers, to be located in the lid. This allows the various painting accessories and the paint container itself to be kept tidy in a contained working area.
The lid and tray are preferably releasably securable. The lid and tray may be configured to provide a snap-fit together with engagement of their respective peripheries or complementary engagement means for example inter-engaging lugs may be provided.
The painting accessory tray may comprise in a preferred embodiment a markable writing area, for example a laminated sheet affixed to the tray, for example on the underside of the tray. This may be used to record details of particular paints used, the locations of use, the date of use of the paint or other details as required by the user. This avoids the inconvenience of recording such information separately from the painting accessories with the risk of such information being lost over time.
The painting accessory tray according to the invention advantageously allows the user to purchase in a single transaction the materials and implements typically used in a painting process without the inconvenience of having to purchase the items separately. Furthermore, for inexperienced painters who may not be familiar with the range of different materials or equipment required in a painting process, the invention allows the user to feel confident that all the relevant materials and items have been acquired in a single transaction in readiness for the user to commence painting and with a reduced likelihood that the painter will need to interrupt the painting process to acquire materials or equipment which may be overlooked or which the novice painter may not appreciate are necessary when initially acquiring the said materials or equipment.
The painting accessory tray may be provided with means to facilitate storage for example a hook or an aperture to enable the painting accessory tray to be hung against a wall as may be desired.

The lid (30) may be transparent as shown in figure 2 to facilitate display of the contents of the tray (1) or may be a conventional paint tray as shown in Figure 3. The lid (30) has a hanging tab (31) to allow the paint accessory tray to be hung on a wall
The tray has three rectangular recesses (3, 4) and (5) which are longitudinally disposed about the lengthways axis of the tray and which are adapted to store painting accessories both when supplied as a new product and also after opening when the user has finished painting and wishes to store the tray and painting products in readiness for subsequent painting. The recesses (3 to 5) extend substantially through the thickness of the tray (1). The central recess (4) is surrounded by a wall (6) around its periphery and has an internal dividing wall (7) which splits the recess (4) into two smaller, shallower recesses (4a, 4b). The raised wall (6) provides a support upon which the user may rest the handle of a painting implement while placing the paint applying part of the implement in the recess (4). A liquid may be disposed in recess (4) or (4a) or 4b) providing a reservoir in which the user may a painting implement to reduce the risk of paint on the implement drying, for example during an interruption in the painting process. The tray also comprises a narrow, elongate recess (8) which is suitable for receiving the edge of a paint tin lid and holding the lid in a generally upright manner relative to the tray (1). The elongate recess (8) extends along substantially the full length of the tray (1). A further elongate recess (9) is provided and also extends along substantially the full length of the tray (1). The elongate recess (9) is wider than elongate recess (8) and is adapted to store a cleaning implement, for example a brush.
The tray (1) further comprises two liquid storage container recesses (10, 11) for receiving generally cylindrical liquid storage containers (12, 13). The recesses (10, 11) may have a rectangular or square cross section or a curved cross section for ready storage of the containers (12, 13).
The containers (12, 13) are shown in a stored configuration and are mounted in holders (14, 15) which are located in the end portion of recesses (10, 11). The holders (14, 15) are themselves mounted so as to pivot whereby the containers (12, 13) may be moved to an inuse configuration in which they are substantially perpendicular to the tray (1). The tray (1) and the holders (14, 15) include complementary inter-engaging means for example a pin and hole arrangement (not shown) which are located at mounting points and allow the holders (14, 15) to hold the containers (12, 13) in a stored or in-use position. The containers (12, 13) are suitably mounted in the holders (14), (15) in a push-fit manner.
