SINGLE COMPONENT PACKAGING WITH DETACHABLE
REINFORCEMENT FOLD
This invention relates to a single component and single material packaging with a detachable reinforcement fold made from a sheet material such as cardboard or die-cut corrugated cardboard that is then glued and folded over itself.
The objectives sought are:
- to increase stacking resistance of the packaging with respect to usual transport packaging for the transport of heavy or non-self carrying products,
- to increase its puncture strength to allow transport of products with either sharp or blunt edges,
- to facilitate the manufacture of the packaging by simplifying the settings on the machines such as those for folding and gluing,
- to facilitate the assembly and filling of the packaging so that it can be used manually or mechanically such as a conventional flap box,
- to facilitate opening of the packaging and indirectly prevent risks of injury by the contents themselves or by any cutting tools used to open it,
- to use thin materials rather than thick and expensive materials, also reducing as much as possible any precut lines that make the packaging structure more fragile.
In order to achieve these objectives, the design of the packaging is based on a structure the four side walls of which are doubled and which is delivered by the packaging manufacturer to the packager ready for use under the reconstituted shape of a common flap box.
Certain supplementary devices allow removing the inner fold and the top lid in a single operation without emptying the contents and thus directly place the rest of the packaging and its contents on the shelves of hardware stores, craftsmen's trucks or DIY sales surfaces without transferring them into other containers or storage equipment.
Thus folded upon itself, and in the case in which the colour of the sheet of material used is not the same as the two sides of this sheet, we obtain a bottom and a iid, a part to be removed, of different colours, which facilitate the identification of the part to be removed by the user.
One preferred application is that of the packaging of general hardware products such as the packaging of metal parts for assembling framework structures, for example.
Other applications are rather intended for products that either do not withstand compression such as packages of potato chips, or that are too aggressive or unstable such as knives.
There are packages the side walls of which are doubled after having been folded, as shown in patent WILSON US 3360181 of 17 June 1966, but the principle used, which consists in folding in one direction and then folding in the other direction without the help of a double articulation, called Z folding, requires too long of a time to adjust the settings on a cutting and folding machine and slows down the rate of folding due to the antagonistic movements and shifts that are complicated to manage.
There are packaging solutions the side walls of which are only partially folded in order to limit these shifts either by the overlapping of only part of the bottom as described in patent THIMM DE2000449, or by the frequently partial overlapping of three side walls instead of four as described in patent DAVID SMITH GB2409432 and, most frequently also with a Z-type fold. These packaging are very fragile since they are folded incompletely and they do not show enough stacking resistance to compression for the applications sought since the doubled parts are only partially so.
This invention overcomes the drawbacks or inconveniences of the above patents by providing a complete fold on the four faces along the entire useful height of the packaging and a folding that has been simplified to a single movement and a single axis for folding the fold along the belt.
Figure 1 is an external view of the packaging that is the subject matter of the invention as it lies flat, after die-cutting and before gluing and folding.
Figure 2 is an external view of this same packaging as it lies flat, after cutting, gluing and folding the packaging such that the packaging manufacturer may deliver it to the packaging user who can thus receive it in order to later assemble it and fill it with the desired contents, and then close it and ship it (not shown).
In this figure 2, the layers that are not visible from the outside are shown in a dashed line.
According to Figure 1, the packaging subject of the invention generally consists of two assemblies (F and C) that are linked and articulated with another.
The first assembly, a side belt with bottom closing flaps, constitutes the bottom of the packaging (F), which bottom consists of a succession of panels of the four outer side faces (1, 2, 3, 4) extended on either side by the assembly panels or legs (5 and 6) which are equally intended for transporting without offsets the sheet cut in the machines, notable the cutting folding machine, and wherein each outer side face is extended by closing panels or flaps for this bottom (respectively 7, 8, 9, 10), perpendicularly and unilaterally to the direction of the succession of outer side faces.
The second assembly, a side fold with top closing flaps, makes up the cover (C), which cover consists of a succession of the panels of the four inner side walls (11, 12, 13, 14) linked and articulated by at least two devices for linking and articulating (15 and 16, 15 being the grouping of parts 15-1 and 15-2 and 16 being the grouping of parts 16-1 and 16-2) to the bottom flaps (7, 8, 9, 10) and wherein each of these inner side faces extends perpendicularly and unilaterally to the direction of such succession by closing or cover panels or flaps (respectively 17, 18, 19 and 20).
In addition to the capacity of the two assembly panels or legs (5 and 6) to carry and transport the sheet through the machines without errors, the first assembly leg (6) is conceived and glued to the outside of the packaging in order to ensure the linking and continuity between the two panels of the extreme outer side faces (1 and 4) and in order to slow the eventual bursting of the packaging under the pressure of its contents in the event of a crash or of overstacking and the second inner leg (5) is placed, after folding, in the hollow (5') of the opposite extreme inner face (14) in order to guide the fold to the folding and opening of the packaging and to reinforce the linking edge (33) ensured by the outer leg (6) on the inside.
The two assemblies for the bottom (F) and the cover (C) are placed with respect to one another, perpendicularly to the direction of the two successions of side face panels above according to a succession of panels that comprises, in this order, the panels of the outer side faces (1 to 4), the panels of the bottom flaps (7 to 10), the panels of the inner side faces (11 to 14) and finally the panels of the cover flaps (17 to 20), which succession leads to the inner side face panels (11, 12, 13, 14) that are in contact with the panels of the bottom flaps before folding (7, 8, 9, 10).
The packaging represented in Figure 1 is a version with only two linking and articulating devices, which devices link two of the bottom flaps to two of the inner side faces, which lie opposite one another after assembly. Without prejudice to the invention, there may be more of these devices.
Each linking and articulation device (15 and 16 if only two) is subdivided into two parts.
A first part (15-1 for device 15 and 16-1 for device 16) is totally and exclusively included in the corresponding bottom flap panel (respectively 7 and 9 in the example shown) to which it is linked and articulated by preferably double folds (respectively 21 and 22) aligned according to the folding and rotation axis A-A. These first parts (15-1 and 16-1) have a height roughly equal to half the height of the corresponding flap that includes them.
A second part (15-2 for device 15 and 16-2 for device 16) is totally and exclusively included in the corresponding inner side face panel (respectively 11 and 13 in the example shown) to which it is linked by weakened precut lines (25 and 26 respectively) on either side of an opening or hollow (27 and 28 respectively) in order to allow it to separate more easily from the inner face.
A cutting line separates the two parts of each linking and articulating device (between 15-1 and 15-2 and between 16-1 and 16-2), which line is the extension of the common edge between the bottom closing flaps (7, 8, 9, 10) and the panels of the inner side faces (11, 12, 13, 14).
This common edge and these cutting lines are provided with attachment points to provide coherence and rigidity to the cut sheet during any handling before folding, which attachment points are intended to break along this same fold during the folding of the packaging over itself along the A-A axis.
There are detachable parts that are precut (23 and 24 if only two as shown) on the panels of the outer side faces (respectively 1 and 3) which after folding the packaging over itself are positioned facing the parts of the linking and articulating devices included in the inner side faces (respectively 15-2 and 16-2) and preferably glued to them in order to allow them to be pushed inwards and to detach the parts (15-2 and 16-2 respectively) of the linking and articulating devices included in the panels of the inner side faces of the packaging after assembly, filling, closing and transport of the latter and when it is finally placed in the shop.
Linking and articulation folds define the different panels that make up the packaging:
- between the panels of the outer faces of the bottom between them (29 between faces 1 and 2, 30 between faces 2 and 3, 31 between faces 3 and 4) and with the assembly panels or legs (32 between face 1 and assembly leg 5, 33 between face 4 and assembly leg 6),
- between the panels of the outer faces of the bottom and their extensions into their respective bottom flap panels (34 between face 1 and flap 7, 35 between face 2 and bottom flap 8, 36 between face 3 and flap 9, 37 between face 4 and flap 10),
- between the panels of the inner faces of the cover and their respective panels extending into cover flaps (38 between face 11 and flap 17, 39 between face 12 and flap 18, 40 between face 13 and flap 19, 41 between face 14 and flap 20),
In order to define the reinforcements and the deformations of the edges, double folds called reversed on either side of the hollows allow linking and articulating the panels of the inner side faces of the cover with one another (hollows 42 and double folds 43 between faces 11 and 12, hollows 44 and double folds 45 between faces 12 and 13, hollows 46 and double folds 47 between faces 13 and 14).
According to Figures 1 and 2, after the die-cutting operation in order to obtain the sheet shown in figure 1, the packaging is then transformed by passing it through a gluing and folding machine in order to obtain the packaging shown in figure 2.
A first stage of folding to 180° with rotation axis (A-A) passing by the articulation folds (21 and 22) preferably doubled between the parts (15-1 and 16-1) of the linking and articulating devices included in the bottom flaps and these same bottom flaps (7 and 9 respectively), allow contact by overlapping of the panels of the inner side faces (11, 12, 13 and 14) with the respective panels of the outer side faces (1, 2, 3, 4).
A second folding stage, after partial glueing of the assembly panel or leg (6) or of the surface of the panel of the outer side face (1) with which it overlaps, allows folding the panels of the extreme side faces (1 and 11) over the panels of the adjacent middle side faces (2 and 12) according to folding axis B1-B1 along the articulation folds (29 and 43) that link these extreme side face panels with the adjacent middle side face panels, then folding the panels of the opposing extreme side face panels (4 and 14) over the panels of the adjacent middle side face panels (3 and 13) according to folding axis B2-B2 along articulation folds (31 and 47) linking these extreme side face panels with the adjacent middle side face panels.
This places the assembly leg panels (5 and 6) on either side of a same edge of the packaging (32/33), thus doubly ensuring and reinforcing the link between the two external side faces of the packaging.
If we choose to promote the removal of the inner fold after transport by making it easier, we proceed to partial complementary gluing of the removable parts (23 and 24) located after folding along A-A and facing the parts (15-2 and 16-2 respectively) of the linking and articulating devices included in the panels of the inner side faces.
If we choose to promote filling the packaging by securing the placement of the panels of the inner side faces over the outer side faces after overlapping, then the precut removable parts (48) are placed close to the free edge of the external side face panels (2 and 4 in the embodiment shown) and glued before they overlap, after folding to 180° according to axis A-A, on the top (49) of the corresponding inner side faces (12 and 14 in the embodiment shown).
The attachment points (50) are shown by short lines perpendicular to the cutting lines.
