A CANISTER FOR AN ADVERTISING PROMOTION
Field
The present invention relates to a canister for use in an advertising promotion.
Background
To promote sales of a product, it has previously been proposed to give away a prize with random items of the product. For example, a winning ticket may be included in a chocolate bar selected at random.
Obj ect
The present invention seeks to apply such a method of marketing promotion to a product contained in a canister.
Summary
According to a first aspect of the invention, there is provided a light-tight sealed canister comprising a device that includes a light sensor and that is operative to emit a sound when the canister is opened and its interior exposed to light.
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a canister that is outwardly indistinguishable from commercially available regular canisters containing a product that is to form part of an advertising promotion, wherein the canister is sealed and light-tight and contains a light sensitive device to detect ambient light when the canister is opened and a sound generating device activated by the light sensitive device to emit a sound when light is detected in order to indicate that the purchaser of the canister has won a prize.
The invention serves to heighten the surprise and to add to the occasion when a purchaser opens a winning canister by announcing the win not only to the purchaser of the canister but to others who may be in the vicinity. The sound is preferably a fanfare lasting several seconds.
It is of course important for an advertising promotion that there should be no easy way of identifying a winning canister. Apart from outward appearance of the canister, it is preferred that it should have the same weight and the weight distribution as regular canisters containing the product.
It is further important that a winning canister should sound the same as a regular canister if tapped or shaken. This may be achieved by filling the canister with the product itself or with a non-consumable substitute.
In an embodiment of the invention, the product comprises crisps made of reconstituted potatoes that are moulded to a saddle-like shape, and the winning container may contain a column of plastics discs emulating the individual consumable crisps to enable the canister to sound the same if tapped or shaken.
Conveniently, the device may comprise a base incorporating the light sensor, a battery and circuitry for emitting a sound when the light sensor is exposed to light, a shaft extending from the base and a plurality of annular spaced discs that are non-rotatably slidably mounted onto the shaft, the discs being shaped and positioned not to obstruct the path of ambient light to the light sensor when the canister is opened.
Brief description of the drawings
The invention will now be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device for placing within a canister, and
Figure 2 is a section through the device of Figure 1 when located within a canister.
Detailed description of the drawings
The device 10 in Figures 1 and 3 comprises a hollow base 12 within which there are mounted battery cells 14, a speaker 16, light sensors and circuitry 18 that detects when the light sensors are exposed to light and sends a signal to the speaker 16 to emit a sound. The sound may be a tune or fanfare set by data stored in a memory chip of the circuitry. The light sensors are not visible in the drawings but sit in recesses 20 in the base to face towards the opposite end of the canister 50.
Circuitry is well known that produces a tune when a birthday card is opened and it is not therefore necessary to describe such circuitry in any detail in the present context. The essential difference in the circuitry used in the present invention is that a sound is initiated by exposure to light rather than by means of a manual switch.
The purpose of the device is to produce a sound when a canister 50 is opened to announce to the person who has bought the canister that a prize has been won. This is to promote the sale of regular canisters of identical outward appearance that contain a consumable product. In the case of the device shown in Figures 1 and 2, the regular canister would contain reconstituted potato crisps.
Aside from the outward appearance of the prize winning canister 50 being identical with regular canisters, it is important that it should be indistinguishable in other physical aspects. In particular, the weight of the canister 50, its weight distribution (position of its centre of gravity) as well as the sound it makes if shaken or tapped should all the same as a regular canister.
To ensure that the centre of gravity is not displaced, the weight of the base 12 is designed to match the weight of the number crisps that would occupy the same volume in a regular canister.
To emulate the sounds made by a canister filled with reconstituted potato crisps, a shaft 30 extends upwards from the base 12, about which are mounted individual discs 32 that emulate the individual crisps. Each disc 32, which has the same saddle shape as a crisp in a regular container and is formed with an upwardly extending cylindrical collar 32a surrounding and spaced from the shaft 30 and a downwardly extending cylindrical collar 32b of smaller diameter that fits in the gap between the shaft and the collar 32a of the next lower disc. In this way, the discs are maintained spaced from one another, centred on the shaft and can slide relative to one another and relative to the shaft 30.
The base 12 is made a tight fit in the canister by means of ribs 36 that may be made of a different material from the base 12. For example, while the base may be made of a hard plastics material, such as high density polyethylene, the ribs 36 may be made of a rubber or an elastomeric material to grip the canister frictionally and prevent the device 10 from moving around in the canister 50 even if shaken forcefully.
The opposite end of the shaft 30 is fitted with a cap 38 to limit the total amount of play between the discs 32.
Furthermore, the shaft is provided with keys 34 that ensure that the discs 32 can only be slipped onto the shaft 30 with one orientation. In this way, it is ensured that the discs 32 line up with one another and leave a clear path from the open end of the canister 50 to the light sensors mounted on the upper surface of the base 12 within the recesses 20.
