Field of the Invention
The present invention concerns bicycle washing apparatus. More particularly, but not exclusively, this invention concerns a portable bicycle-cleaning unit.
Background of the Invention
Bicycle cleaning stations are provided at some forestbased recreational cycling facilities so that cyclists can travel home with clean bicycles and help reduce the spread of tree diseases between forests.
Where available, these cleaning stations typically consist of a water jet that charges a fee per use and require the bicycle to be supported against a wall or car. The cost of using such stations becomes significant with regular use and the force of the waterjet can cause the bicycle to fall over, with potential to damage the bicycle or car if used as a support. Such bicycle cleaning facilities are not provided everywhere; therefore large areas of forest used for cycling are left unnecessarily susceptible to the spread of tree diseases.
The present invention seeks to mitigate the abovementioned problems.
Summary of the Invention
The present invention provides a portable bicyclecleaning unit comprising an integrated water tank and a water delivery system arranged to deliver water from the water tank, and wherein the unit further comprises an integrated bicycle support arranged to support a bicycle in a substantially upright position.
The water tank may be removable from the unit. The integrated bicycle support may be arranged to engage with the bicycle and thereby support the bicycle in an upright position.
The present invention provides a convenient portable bicycle cleaning station. When a cyclist wishes to clean their bicycle, the integrated bicycle support can be used to support the bicycle in an upright position, rather than having to find a wall or some other surface, for example a car which can easily be damaged by a falling bicycle, for supporting the bicycle, or having to flip the bicycle upside down and support it on its handlebars and saddle. Whilst the bicycle is supported by the integrated bicycle support the bicycle can be washed using water delivered from the water tank to the bicycle using the water delivery system. The presence of the water tank within the unit serves as a ballast which contributes to the stability of the portable bicyclecleaning unit while supporting a bicycle.
The portable bicycle-cleaning unit to may be arranged to store bicycle cleaning apparatus. The portable bicycle-cleaning unit may form a receptacle in which bicycle cleaning apparatus can be stored. The portable bicycle-cleaning unit may comprise a hollow body in which the receptacle is formed. The receptacle may be covered over with a lid.
In this preferred arrangement, a user of the portable bicycle-cleaning unit can store their bicycle cleaning apparatus, typically consisting of various types and sizes of cleaning brush and various types and sizes of bottles of cleaning fluids, within the portable bicycle-cleaning unit.
The integrated bicycle support may be formed by the unit being shaped to receive part of the bicycle and support the received part, thereby supporting the bicycle in the substantially upright position. The part may be a wheel of the bicycle. The part may be part of the wheel rather than the whole wheel.
The unit may comprise a recess, the recess being formed by opposing walls, wherein the recess is arranged to receive the wheel of the bicycle and the opposing walls are arranged to abut opposing sides of the received wheel of the bicycle, thereby supporting the bicycle in a substantially upright position.
The water tank may be a pressurisable water tank. The water tank may comprise a pump which is operable to pump air into the water tank. The pump may be a hand operated pump. The pump may be a foot operated pump. The water delivery system may comprise a hose.
The portable bicycle-cleaning unit may be a manually operated bicycle cleaning unit. The portable bicyclecleaning unit may be a standalone bicycle cleaning unit. The portable bicycle-cleaning unit may be arranged to fit into the boot of a standard-sized saloon car. The portable bicycle-cleaning unit may be arranged so that it may be manually lifted by a person, without aid, and moved into and out of the boot of a standard-sized saloon car .
The portable bicycle-cleaning unit may comprise one or more wheels. The portable bicycle-cleaning unit may occupy a volume of less than 1 m3. The portable bicyclecleaning unit may occupy a volume of less than 0.5 m3. The water tank may be arranged to store less than 5 litres of water. The water tank may be arranged to store less than 10 litres of water. Such arrangements facilitate movement of the portable bicycle-cleaning unit should the user wish to regularly move the unit between locations, for example between a garage and the boot of a car.
It will of course be appreciated that features described in relation to one aspect of the present invention may be incorporated into other aspects of the present invention.
Description of the Drawings
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying schematic drawings of which:
Figure 1 is an isometric view of a portable bicyclecleaning unit according to an embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is the view of figure 1 with broken lines showing the arrangement of the inside of the portable bicycle-cleaning unit; and
Figure 3 is a schematic showing the bicycle cleaning unit in use.
Detailed Description
A portable bicycle-cleaning unit 1 according to an embodiment of the invention is shown in Figure 1. The unit 1 comprises a hollow main body 3, a pair of wheels 5 are attached to the main body 3 at a first end of the main body 3, and are arranged such that the unit may be moved upon the two wheels, and a pair of projecting members 7 project from a second, opposite, end of the main body 3. The projecting members are spaced apart to form a bicycle tyre receiving portion 9, and are arranged to support a bicycle 11 in an upright position, as shown in Figure 3, when a tyre 13 of the bicycle 11 is received into the tyre receiving portion 9.
As can be seen from Figure 2, the hollow main body 3 forms a receptacle 15 in which bicycle washing equipment and other tools may be stored. The receptacle 15 is accessed via an aperture 18 formed in the upper surface 17 of the unit 1. The receptacle can be secured by placing a lid 19 over the aperture, when in place the lid 19 forms part of the upper surface 17 of the unit 1. Furthermore the hollow main body 3 also comprises an integrated water delivery system which consists of a water gun 21 connected to a pressurisable water storage tank 23 via a hose 25.
Figure 3 shows the portable bicycle-cleaning unit 1 in use. As can be seen, the rear wheel 13 of a bicycle 11 has been placed in the tyre receiving portion 9 of the unit 1 such that the bicycle 11 is supported in an upright position. When the unit 1 and bicycle 11 are arranged as such, the water gun 21 can be used to deliver a jet of water 27 for cleaning the bicycle 11. When the bicycle 11 is clean, the water gun 21 and hose 25, and any other apparatus used to clean the bicycle 11 (for example brushes) may be packed away into the receptacle 15 formed by the main body 3 of the unit 1. Such an arrangement allows for the portable bicycle-cleaning unit to be conveniently packed away and stored in the boot of a car .
Where in the foregoing description, integers or elements are mentioned which have known, obvious or foreseeable equivalents, then such equivalents are herein incorporated as if individually set forth. Reference should be made to the claims for determining the true scope of the present invention, which should be construed so as to encompass any such equivalents. It will also be appreciated by the reader that integers or features of the invention that are described as preferable, advantageous, convenient or the like are optional and do not limit the scope of the independent claims. Moreover, it is to be understood that such optional integers or features, whilst of possible benefit in some embodiments of the invention, may not be desirable, and may therefore be absent, in other embodiments.
