An Inflatable Item of Furniture
Technical Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to inflatable devices, particularly inflatable items of furniture, and specifically, but not exclusively to inflatable sofas and inflatable chaise 5 longues.
Background to the Invention
Inflatable items of furniture such as seating and sofas are known. Inflatable furniture has many advantages over conventional furniture, including increased portability and functionality, and reduced cost.
Conventional inflatable furniture comprises a flexible bag or sack in the shape of an item of furniture, which is inflated with air manually by a user blowing into a valve inserted into the bag. Once the bag is filled with air, the valve is closed. The inflated bag then resembles an item of furniture and can be used as such. This means of inflation is however arduous and time consuming.
Figure 1 shows a diagrammatic cross section view of a known inflatable sofa 1 comprising an alternative means of inflation. The inflatable sofa 1 comprises a shaped, flexible bag 2 comprising a substantially U-shaped air chamber 3 with a first opening 5 at one end of the “U” and a second opening 7 at the other end of the “U” through which air can flow into and out of the chamber 3. A user fills the chamber 3 by opening one of the openings, in this case the first opening 5, which substantially closes the other opening, in this case the second opening 7. The user then moves the inflatable sofa 1 through the air in a swooping action with the first opening 5 held open so as to scoop air into the chamber 3 through the first opening 5. Air that enters the chamber 3 cannot escape because the second opening 7 is closed. The first opening 5 can then be sealed using a pair of opposing resilient strips 4, 6 provided in the air bag 2 adjacent the outer edge of the first opening 5 in order to trap the scooped air in the chamber 3 and so that the inflatable sofa 1 can be used.
With this arrangement, although use of a small valve is eliminated, the inflatable sofa 1 shown in Figure 1 still has a number of disadvantages, not least that it can be quite difficult for inexperienced users to fill the chamber 3 with air.
Embodiments of the present invention seek to address the above problem and provide an improved inflatable item of furniture.
Summary of the Invention
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided an inflatable item of furniture comprising: a bag comprising a first chamber and a second chamber separated by a gusset, the first chamber having a first chamber opening and the second chamber having a second chamber opening, the first chamber opening being adjacent the 15 second chamber opening, such that swooping the inflatable item of furniture through air forces air into both the first and second chamber openings.
In this way, the present invention provides for a gusset that divides the bag into two separate chambers. The gusset maintains the structural integrity of the inflatable item of furniture whilst allowing the first and second chamber openings to open widely. The enlarged opening consequently enables air to more easily fill the first and second chambers. In addition, the gusset holds the first and second chambers open throughout substantially their whole length so that they cannot collapse, which allows air to flow directly, unimpeded into the whole volume of the first and second chambers (unlike the
U-shaped arrangement of the prior art). Accordingly, the present invention provides an inflatable item of furniture that can be inflated much more easily than conventional inflatable items of furniture having valves or the type described with reference to Figure
1.
The inflatable item of furniture may be any item of furniture such as an inflatable chair, an inflatable sofa or an inflatable chaise longue etc.
The first chamber and the second chamber may each comprise a lining formed from a material that is impermeable to air (i.e. substantially impermeable, i.e. impermeable enough so that the inflatable item of furniture may be used by a user for a reasonable period of time). The lining of each chamber may be substantially the same size and shape as the chamber. Alternatively, the lining of each chamber may be smaller than the chamber.
The inflatable item of furniture may further comprise a collar defining an opening. The collar may be provided at a neck portion of the bag, which is a portion adjacent the first and second chamber openings. The collar may be a separate part attached to or fixed to the bag. Alternatively, the collar may be formed as part of the bag. The collar may have substantially the same cross-sectional area as the bag. The collar may have substantially the same cross-sectional area as the first and second chambers combined, that is to say, the opening of the collar may be the same size as the combined area of the first and second chamber openings. Alternatively, collar may have a greater cross-sectional area than the first and second chambers combined, that is to say, the opening of the collar may be bigger than the combined area of the first and second chamber openings. Thus the opening of the collar may act as a funnel. Alternatively, collar may have a smaller cross-sectional area than the first and second chambers combined, that is to say, the opening of the collar may be smaller than the combined area of the first and second chamber openings. Thus, the collar may be tapered. The collar may be formed from a different material to which the bag is formed from. The collar may be formed from a stronger material than which the bag is formed from. The collar may have a length of at least 10cm, a width or diameter of at least 70cm and a circumference of at least 150cm. The collar may preferably have a length of between about 5cm and about 30cm, a width or diameter of between about 80cm and about 120cm, and a circumference of between about 180cm and about 400cm. The collar may most 10 preferably have a length of about 15cm, a width or diameter of about 105cm and a circumference of about 210cm. Alternatively, the collar may taper from a width of at least at least about 100 to a width of at least about 80cm. The collar may taper from a width of 105cm to a width of 89cm.
In this way, the collar may effectively extend the length of the bag so that during 15 inflation, when the bag is closed to seal air in the first and second chambers, the collar acts as a conduit between the first and second chambers to equalize the volume of air in the first and second chambers.
The gusset may be oriented substantially in line with, or parallel to, the longitudinal axis of the inflatable item of furniture and/or the longitudinal axes of the first and second chambers. The gusset may be arranged to extend along substantially the whole length of each of the first and second chambers. The gusset may be a substantially rectangular sheet. The gusset may be arranged such that it extends from a base of the bag to at least the collar. The gusset may be arranged such that it does not extend into the collar. The collar may extend beyond the gusset. The gusset may be disposed in between the first and second chambers. The gusset may be formed from a material that is stronger than the material from which the bag and/or the first and second chambers are formed from. The gusset may be formed from a material that is stronger than the material from which the chamber linings are formed from.
A strengthening piece may be provided at the end of the gusset. The strengthening piece may be provided on the gusset adjacent the first and second chamber openings. The strengthening piece may be formed from a different material to which the gusset is formed from. The strengthening piece may be formed from a stronger material than which the gusset is formed from. The strengthening piece may have a length of at least
8cm. The strengthening piece may preferably have a length of between about 10cm and about 20cm. The strengthening piece may most preferably have a length of about 15cm.
The first and second chambers may be substantially the same size. The first and second chambers may have substantially the same cross sectional areas and/or volumes. The first and second chambers may be oriented substantially parallel to one another.
The first and second chamber openings may be substantially the same size and/or have substantially the same cross sectional areas. The first chamber opening and/or the second chamber opening may be substantially circular.
The first chamber opening and/or the second chamber opening may each have a diameter of at least 10cm. The first chamber opening and/or the second chamber opening may preferably each have a diameter of between about 20cm and about 50cm. The first chamber opening and/or the second chamber opening may most preferably each have a diameter of about 40cm.
The inflatable item of furniture may further comprise one or more resilient strips provided adjacent or housed in the collar for permitting closure of the bag and/or the first chamber opening and/or the second chamber opening. When two more resilient strips are provided, the resilient strips may permit closure of the bag and/or the first chamber opening and/or the second chamber opening by abutting one another. Each resilient strip may be formed from a plastics material. When the inflatable item of furniture comprises two or more resilient strips, each resilient strip may be substantially the same size. Each resilient strip may be bendable into approximately a circle to assist in closing the bag and/or the first chamber opening and/or the second chamber opening. In this way, a means for securely retaining air inside the chambers is provided.
The inflatable item of furniture may further comprise a connector and a complementary connector. The connector and/or the complementary connector may be for securing the resilient strips to one another.
The connector may be attached to the inflatable item of furniture by a strap. The 15 complementary connector may be attached to the inflatable item of furniture by a strap.

Figure 5 is a front perspective view of an inflatable item of furniture sofa 5 according to a second embodiment of the present invention;
Figure 6 is a diagrammatic transverse cross section view of an inflatable item of furniture according to a third embodiment of the present invention; and
Figure 7 is a diagrammatic transverse cross section view of an inflatable item of furniture according to a fourth embodiment of the present invention.
Figure 1 is discussed above in the “Background to the Invention” and illustrates a known inflatable sofa.
Referring to Figures 2 and 3, an inflatable item of furniture, in this embodiment an inflatable sofa 11, comprises a substantially elliptical tubular bag 12 defining a cavity having a circumferential neck 26. The bag 12 is formed from one of more layers of a flexible material For example, the bag 12 may be formed from 210T Nylon (RTM), which is strong and lightweight, but somewhat permeable to air.
The cavity is divided into a first chamber 13 and a second chamber 17 by a gusset that is oriented substantially in line with the longitudinal axis of the inflatable sofa 11.
The gusset 19 is attached towards the centre of, and extends between, the long sides of 20 the bag 12 from its base 28. The gusset 19 is thus oriented substantially perpendicularly relative to the centre point of the long sides of the bag 12. The gusset 19 is a substantially rectangular sheet that extends the whole length of the chambers 13, 17, therefore separating the first chamber 13 from the second chamber 17.
The length of the gusset 19 defines the length of the first and second chambers 13, 17, and the position ofthe neck 26 ofthebag 12. Thus, at the proximal edge ofthe gusset
19 there is a first chamber opening 20 acting as a mouth to the first chamber 13 and a second chamber opening 18 acting as a mouth to the second chamber 17. Each chamber 13, 17 therefore comprises an opening 20, 18. The first chamber 13 and the second chamber 17 are oriented such that they are adjacent and substantially parallel to one another and that their openings are adjacent one another. The distal end of each chamber
13, 17 to its chamber opening 20, 18 is sealed so that air cannot escape from a chamber
13, 17 when its chamber opening 20, 18 is closed. The first chamber 13 and the second chamber 17 have substantially similar sizes and cross sectional areas, and thus can contain a substantially similar volume of air.
The first and second openings 20, 18 may have a diameter of 40cm.
The first chamber 13 comprises a first chamber lining 24 formed from a lightweight and relatively weak material that is at least substantially impermeable to air, such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The first chamber lining 24 is substantially the same size and shape as the first chamber 13 and is attached to the first chamber 13 at the first chamber opening 20, adjacent the neck 26. The first chamber lining 24 is also attached to 20 the gusset 19.
Similarly, the second chamber 17 comprises a second chamber lining 25 formed from a lightweight and relatively weak material that is at least substantially impermeable to air, such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The second chamber lining 25 is substantially the same size and shape as the second chamber 17 and is attached to the second chamber 17 at the second chamber opening 18, adjacent the neck 26. The second chamber lining 25 is also attached to the gusset 19.
The inflatable sofa 11 further comprises a substantially elliptical tubular collar 21 5 attached to the neck 26 adjacent the first chamber opening 20 and the second chamber opening 18, which acts as a conduit to and between the first and second chambers 13,17 and defines an opening 15. The collar 21 has substantially the same cross sectional area as the bag 12 and therefore effectively acts as an extension to the bag 12. However, the gusset 19 does not extend into the collar 21 and therefore the collar 21 does not extend the length of the first and second chambers 13, 17.
The collar 21 is formed from one of more layers of a flexible material, at least one of which is at least substantially impermeable to air. For example, the collar 21 may be formed from a layer of420D Nylon (RTM) backed with polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which is attached to the first and second chamber linings 24, 25.
The collar 21 may have a length of about 15cm, a width of about 105cm and a circumference of about 210cm.
A pair of resilient strips 14, 16 is housed within the end of the collar 21 that is not attached to the bag 12. Each of the strips 14, 16 has a length that is approximately equal to the width of the bag 12. The strips 14, 16 may be manipulated by a user in order to 20 open and close the collar 21 to allow air to enter the first and second chamber openings
20, 18 through the opening 15 and be retained within the first and second chambers 13,
17.
A connector 22 and a complementary connector 23 in the form of a set of side release buckles are provided attached to respective straps that are fixed to the collar 21 in the region of the ends to the strips 14,16. The connectors 22,23 are engageable with one another for securing the strips 14, 16 in their closed positions so as to contain air within the first and second chambers 13, 17, in a manner that is described below.
A strengthening piece 27 is provided attached to the gusset 19, along the edge of the gusset 19 adjacent the first and second chamber openings 20, 18. The strengthening piece 27 is formed from a different, stronger material than the gusset 19. The strengthening piece 27 may have a length of 15 cm
In use, the inflatable sofa 11 is initially provided in a deflated state and is rolled up so as to minimise the space required for it to be transported.
To inflate, a user first unrolls the inflatable sofa 11. The user then grips the inflatable sofa 11 at a region around the opening 15. For example, the user may grip one of the resilient strips 14, 16 in each hand. The user may alternatively grip parts of the collar21. The user then enlarges and opens the opening 15 by moving the resilient strips 14, 16 away from one another. This, in turn, enlarges the first chamber opening 20 and the second chamber opening 18. The gusset 19 in between the first chamber 13 and the second chamber 17 aids in holding the chambers 13, 17 open along substantially their whole length when the first and second chamber openings 20, 18 are held open by the 20 user. The inflatable sofa 11 is now in a configuration where it is ready to be inflated by the user.
Thus, the user, holding the opening 15 open, moves the inflatable sofa 11 rapidly through the air in a swooping action, with the opening 15 facing toward the direction of the movement, so as to force air into the opening 15, through the collar 21, through the first and second chamber openings 20, 18, and into the first and second chambers 13, 17. The user then quickly closes the opening 15 by bringing the resilient strips 14, 16 back together so that they abut or are in contact with one another if necessary. The user then 5 resets their body position, re-opens the opening 15 by moving the resilient strips 14, 16 apart and carries out another swooping action to further fill the first and second chambers
13,17 with air. The gusset 19 assists the user by holding first and second chambers 13, 17 wide open to allow them to be easily filled with air, and by providing strength to the material forming the bag 12 and the impermeable linings 24, 25. The collar 21 assists the user by funnelling air through the opening 15 and into the first and second chambers 13, with each swooping movement.
When the user has sufficiently filled the first and second chambers 13, 17 with air, the user closes the opening 15 by drawing the resilient strips 14, 16 back together so that they abut one another. The user then seals the opening 15 by rolling the abutting resilient strips 14, 16 towards the first and second chambers 13, 17, which causes the material forming the collar 21 to be rolled up around the resilient strips 14, 16. This pushes any air in the collar 21 into the first and second chambers 13, 17 and helps to equalize their retained volume of air by acting as a conduit to at least briefly allow air transfer between the chambers 13, 17.
Once the resilient strips 14,16 have been rolled several times so that the material forming the collar 21 has been fully or almost fully rolled up around the resilient strips
14, 16, and normally such that the material forming the bag has been rolled up, the ends of the resilient strips 14, 16 are bent towards one another so that they form a circle or oval and the connector 22 is engaged with the complementary connector to secure the resilient strips 14, 16 in their position. This seals the captured air in the first and second chambers 13, 17 such that air cannot escape the chambers 13, 17 or transfer between them. The inflatable sofa 11 is now fully inflated and may be used by a user. This condition is shown in Figure 4.
In order to allow the inflated sofa 11 to be deflated, the user must disengage the connector 22 from the complementary connector 23, unroll the resilient strips 14, 16 to unfurl the collar21, and then pull the resilient strips 14, 16 apart to open the opening 15.
Figure 5 shows an alternative embodiment in which the inflatable item of furniture is an inflatable chaise longue 311. The inflatable chaise longue 311 has the same features as described above with reference to the inflatable sofa 11.
In the embodiment shown in Figures 2 to 4, the collar 21 is of substantially the same diameter across its whole length. Figure 6 shows an alternative embodiment in which the collar 421 tapers towards the centre of the inflatable sofa 411 as it extends away from the bag 412. In this embodiment, the collar 421 tapers from a width of about
105cm to a width of about 89cm. This allows for a user to more easily roll up the material forming the collar 421 as described above.
Figure 7 shows an alternative embodiment in which the collar 521 tapers away from the centre of the inflatable sofa 511 as it extends away from the bag 512. In this embodiment, the collar 521 tapers from a width of about 120cm to a width of about 20 105cm This allows for a user to more easily fill the chambers 513, 517 with air when performing the above described swooping movements since the cross sectional area of the opening 515 is greater than the combined cross sectional areas of the first and second openings 420, 418.
The above embodiments are described by way of example only. Many variations are possible without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
For example, it will be appreciated that the inflatable sofa 11 can be inflated and 5 deflated in a variety of ways.
Furthermore, the inflatable sofa may be any size or shape.
Moreover, the inflatable item of furniture may be any other item of furniture.
In addition, the inflatable item of furniture may comprise additional chambers. For example, the inflatable item of furniture may further comprise a third chamber.
