Abstract

A process for the production of a detergent granule comprises the admixture of a detergent composition. The composition comprises 10-15wt% of a metal carbonate salt; 58-64wt% of a metal sulphate salt; 12-17wt% of a salt of a polycarboxylic acid; 3-4wt% of a polymer of a polycarboxylic acid; and water. Also shown is the detergent granule and its use in a detergent composition.

Description

COMPOSITION
The present invention relates to granular detergents.
Granular detergents may be made in many processes.
There are issues connected with many of these processes.
Two main issues revolve around the properties of the particles that are produced. Many processes yield particles which are friable (overly friable) and degrade in storage / transportation / use. A further issue is that the particles may have poor flow ability properties.
It is an object of the present invention to obviate / mitigate the problems outlined above.
According to the present invention there is provided a process for the production of a detergent granule comprising the admixture of a detergent composition, the composition comprising:-10-15wt% of a metal carbonate salt; 58-64wt% of a metal sulphate salt; 12-17wt% of a salt of a polycarboxylic acid; 3-4wt% of a polymer of a polycarboxylic acid; and water. (all amounts are before admixture)
We have found that the process of the present invention produces detergent granules which have excellent properties. These properties are particularly the properties of good stability (particularly in long term storage) and good flowability.
It has also been found that the process permits the production of an improved granule (and finished product): improved at least aesthetically because the process allows for the incorporation of materials, which are typically liquid at room temperature / pressure, into granules (and then optionally into further more complex formulations) whilst avoiding issues of stickiness.
The granules produced display high performance since they permit the incorporation of high levels of active; which would ordinarily be avoided due to issues of stickiness, which would give rise to clumping.
The granules in general have a size of from 0.1 to 10mm, more preferably from 0.15 to 3 mm, preferably from 0.2 to 2 mm.
Preferably the detergent composition comprises about 2-4wt% water (before admixture).
The granule may contain another component of a detergent composition. Indeed in this regard it has been found that when one or more components of a detergent composition is included in the granule of the present invention this is advantageous in that the component is protected from the remainder of the detergent composition. This can be important when the component is, for example, pH sensitive as many household detergent compositions, e.g. laundry and automatic dishwashing compositions are highly alkaline.
The salt of a polycarboxylic acid preferable comprises a citrate salt.
The polymer of a polycarboxylic acid is preferably at least partially neutralised.
Builders such as polycarboxylates can be included in the granule.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a detergent granule made in a process comprising the admixture of a detergent composition, the composition comprising 10-15wt% of a metal carbonate salt; 58-64wt% of a metal sulphate salt; 12-17wt% of a salt of a polycarboxylic acid; 3-4wt% of a polymer of a polycarboxylic acid; and water.
It has been found that granule has beneficial performance / physical properties. These properties are reasoned to be connected with the incorporation of materials, that are typically liquid at room temperature / pressure, into granules (and then optionally into further more complex formulations) whilst avoiding issues of stickiness. The granules also display high functionality since they permit the incorporation of high levels of active; which would ordinarily be avoided due to issues of stickiness, which would give rise to clumping.
The detergent granule is preferably for use in a detergent composition. The detergent composition is preferably in the form of a tablet. The tablet is preferably formed in a compression based tabletting process.
It has been found that the above described advantages (of high performance and / or low stickiness) are also important when the granules are employed in a tablet.
It has also been found that tablets may be formed with a lower compression pressure. It is postulated that this advantage arises due to the granule of the invention being coarser than the powder usually used for making tablets. As a result of this coarseness a lower tabletting compression pressure has been found to be required to attain a certain level of tablet hardness. This has benefits in terms of the compression pressure that the tablet machine employs. Namely a lower compression pressure may be used. This has benefits in that a lower specification of tabletting machine can be used. Alternatively and / or additionally lower machine maintenance (for a previously suitable tablet forming machine) may be required. Such benefits have been observed especially when the granule comprises at least 10wt% of the tabletted composition.
Similarly it has been found that when the granules are employed in a tablet format there is less requirement for “special” grades of tablet components. As background formulations prepared for forming tablets generally require special powder grades. These can be special in that the components has a particularly specified particle size distribution in order to enable tablet production. Clearly such special grades of tablet components are typically expensive as their production is complex.
It has been found when forming tablets using granules of the invention that these special grades are no longer needed at the same levels and / or that the requirement parameters for these special grades is lower. Thus by using the granule of the invention tablet production cost can be greatly lowered.
The detergent composition preferably comprises a water softening composition. Generally the water softening composition is for use in an automatic washing machine. Preferably the automatic washing machine is an automatic laundry machine for washing fabrics / clothes. The detergent composition is preferably granular (including compressed granular formats such as tablets) and includes other detergent components.
