Abstract
A method for generating spacing members for a number of picture frames and a graphical layout for the frames comprises uploading the dimensions required to an online interface. One picture frame is assigned as an origin frame, with the remainder of the frames being designated as non-origin frames. For each non-origin frame a spacing member is generated, shaped to receive one corner of the non-origin frame and a corner of the origin frame. A customised kit comprising the frames, spacing members and a graphical layout can be created. An apparatus for generating the spacing members is also claimed.
Description
Method For Generating Spacing Members
This invention lies in the field of display manufacture and in particular relates to the generation and manufacture of spacing elements for use in mounting pictures to a wall.
Background
Mounting a layout of picture frames to a wall is currently time consuming and onerous, due to the need to use measuring equipment [ruler, tape measure, laser measurer) to determine the correct mounting location for each picture.
There exist systems which provide a number of frames for pictures along with one or more templates indicating how the frames might be arranged on a wall.
Summary and Statements
Embodiments of the present invention include a method for generating spacing members, the method comprising: for a determined layout of a plurality of frames within a perimeter, the perimeter and each of the plurality of frames being rectangular, wherein a top and bottom edge of each frame and the perimeter are parallel to one another, and a left-hand and right-hand edge of each frame and the perimeter are parallel to one another, the layout defining the spatial relation of the plurality of frames to one another and to the perimeter; assigning one frame from among the plurality of frames as an origin frame, the remaining frames being assigned as non-origin frames. The method further comprises, for each of the non-origin frames: generating a non-origin spacing member, the non-origin spacing member being a physical member shaped to receive a particular corner of the frame and a particular corner of a parent frame from among the plurality of frames at a fixed spatial relation to one another in accordance with the layout, the parent frame being either the origin frame or a non-origin frame at a fixed spatial relation to the origin frame via one or more of the generating spacing members.
Each frame and the perimeter have a right hand edge, a left hand edge, a top edge, and a bottom edge.
The frames need not be present for the method to be performed but the dimensions of the frames are known and are components of the layout.
The corner of the frame and the corner of a parent frame that are fixed in spatial relation via a spacing member may be adjacent corners. The corners may be considered to be adjacent opposing corners. Each corner joins two edges of its respective frame. Two corners are opposing when one of the edges joined by each corner correspond to one another (i.e. top:top, leftdeft etc) and the other does not (i.e. left:right, top:bottom) etc.
Embodiments provide a mechanism facilitating the mounting of a specific layout of frames onto a wall in a short period of time, without the need for measuring equipment.
Embodiments provide a mechanism for creating a customised kit comprising frames, spacing members and a graphical layout, which can be supplied to a user such that using the spacing members and map the user can quickly and easily mount the frames onto a wall of pre-specified dimensions. The graphical layout may also be referred to as a plan or map.
Embodiments provide a mechanism for an internet-based (“online”) interface which allows a user to input dimensions of a wall area, the interface then generating via algorithm or otherwise a layout of frames and spacing members which can then be supplied as a “kit”. The online interface may allow the user to upload their own content (for example personal photographs) for representation in the frames, or else the frames may be pre-populated with professional photographs or drawings. The online interface may allow one or more frames to be populated with a drawing or image from a library stored on a server. Printed versions of the images dimensioned to fit their respective frames may then be provided to the user as elements of the kit.
The frames are picture frames, or representations of picture frames. In particular, the frames may be conventional rectangular photographic frames or alternatively more esoteric items, for instance paintings, wall-mounted sculptures, historical/archeologically artefacts, frames of assorted shapes, etc.
The origin spacing member(s) may be L-shaped and the non-origin spacing members may be T-shaped, although other shapes may be used. A T-shape accommodates two opposing corners and an L-shape accommodates a single corner.
If it is determined that spacing members having the same dimensions can be generated for more than one frame then the physical spacing member may be generated once, with the physical spacing member being for the more than one frame.
Methods may be computer-implemented.
Optionally, the assigning the one frame comprises assigning, as the one frame, a frame having two edges that are each as close or closer to a corresponding edge of the perimeter than any of the other frames.
Corresponding meaning left-hand frame edge corresponds to left-hand perimeter edge, right-hand frame edge corresponds to right-hand perimeter edge, bottom frame edge corresponds to bottom perimeter edge, and top frame edge corresponds to top perimeter edge.
Embodiments may further comprise generating an origin spacing member, the origin spacing member being a physical member shaped to conform to a corner of the perimeter and to receive a corner of the origin frame at a fixed spatial relation to the corner of the perimeter.
The origin spacing member may be L-shaped.
Embodiments may further comprise allocating a different reference sign to each of the non-origin frames; generating a graphical representation of the determined layout on which each non-origin frame is identifiable by the respective reference sign; adding an indication of the location of each of the nonorigin spacing members to the graphical representation; and marking each of the non-origin spacing members with the reference sign allocated to the one or more frames for which the spacing member was generated.
Embodiments allow for the creation of a graphical map or plan or layout showing the frames, spacing members and the order in which each spacing member and frame should be affixed to the wall.
Reference signs maybe colour-coded for ease of reference.
Embodiments clearly denote to the user the relationship between each frame and corresponding spacing members.
Embodiments provide an "easy to use" pictorial set of instructions for affixing a layout of frames to a wall.
Embodiments provide a mechanism using reference signs to ensure the placement of each frame into its correct position on the layout.
Embodiments may also comprise allocating a reference sign to the origin frame, the reference sign allocated to the origin frame being different from the reference signs allocated to each of the non-origin frames; identifying the origin frame by the reference sign allocated to the origin frame on the graphical representation; adding an indication of the location of the origin spacing member to the graphical representation and marking the origin spacing member with the reference sign allocated to the origin frame.
The graphical representation may be electronic or may be physical. A layout may be comprised of one or more sub-layouts, each with its own respective origin frame.
Optionally, the plurality of frames is four or more frames, and the method further comprises: selecting, as part of the layout, two or more frames to be aligned by corresponding edges at, or closer to than any corresponding edges of the plurality of frames, the corresponding edge of the perimeter.
Wherein four or more may be six or more. Or wherein four or more may be, for example, ten, twelve, or fourteen.
Embodiments may include determining the layout. Otherwise, the layout may be predetermined. An algorithm may be utilised to determine the layout A customised layout may be determined for the user using an internet ["online") interface which allows the user to enter dimensions of a wall area, and to receive a layout of frames and spacing members which fits those dimensions. The layout may be generated automatically, for example using an algorithm, or manually.
Optionally, the determined layout is determined by inputting outer dimensions of each of the plurality of frames and dimensions of the perimeter into a layout generating algorithm, and receiving a determined layout as the output of the layout generating algorithm.
The layout generating algorithm may form part of an internet ["online") interface which allows a user to input their wall dimensions and receive a layout. The online interface may include tools for selecting photographs for inclusion in the frames. The online interface may include ordering and payment capabilities.
Optionally, the generated origin spacing member and the generated non-origin spacing members are formed of cardboard, foam board, wood, plastic, or paper.
The spacing members may be numbered or colour-coded for ease of identification. The spacing members maybe of suitable thickness so as to receive easily the corners of a frame when being affixed to a wall.
According to embodiments, the generated origin spacing member and the generated non-origin spacing members may be adhesively fixable and removable from a wall.
The adhesive is strong enough to form a bond between the surface of the wall and the spacing member that supports the weight of the spacing member. However the adhesive may also be weak enough to allow the removal of the spacing member without damaging the wall surface.
Embodiments may make use of multiple strips of double-sided adhesive tape on one side of the spacing members. The spacing members may be provided with the protective covers still in place on the exposed side of the double-sided adhesive tape. The user my progressively peel away the protective covers from one or more strips of tape until enough strips have been exposed such that the adhesive effect is sufficient to hold the spacing member in place.
Embodiments may make use of other methods for the temporary affixing of the spacing members to the wall.
Embodiments may further comprise assembling a kit of parts comprising the plurality of frames, adhesive strips for the plurality of frames, the origin spacing member, each of the non-origin spacing members, and a representation of the layout.
The kit allows the user to populate their wall with frames far more quickly and easily than under an alternative scenario, where they bought a collection of frames separately and determined the layout themselves. The kit obviates the need for measuring equipment and fits the wall space perfectly. The kit may be pre-prepared and then provided to the user in a single box.
Embodiments may include affixing the origin frame to the wall; a) selecting one of the non-origin spacing members for which the parent frame is affixed to the wall; b) adhering the non-origin spacing member to the wall at a position determined by the particular corner of the parent frame received by the selected non-origin spacing member; c) affixing the frame for which the selected non-origin spacing member was generated to the wall so that the particular corner of the frame is received by the non-origin spacing member; d) removing the non-origin spacing member from the wall; and repeating steps a] to d] until each of the plurality of frames is affixed to the wall.
Optionally, affixing the origin frame to the wall comprises: adhering the origin spacing member to a wall at a position indicated by the layout; affixing the origin frame to the wall at a position determined by the origin spacing member; and removing the origin spacing member from the wall.
Where the spacing between corners of several frames in the layout is the same, the corresponding spacing member may be re-used, thus reducing the number of spacing members required to complete the layout. Spacing members intended for re-use may be highlighted to the user, for example through colour-coding.
When placing a frame into a receiving spacing member, a spirit level temporarily attached to an edge of the frame may be used to ensure the level orientation of the frame. One or more spacing members may be provided with integrated spirit levels.
The spacing members provide the user with a simple, intuitive and accurate means for affixing a frame to a wall in a specific position relative to another “parent” frame, and ultimately the “origin frame”.
The spacing members provide a means for affixing a frame to a wall in a specific position which is significantly faster that an alternative scenario where measuring instruments (ruler, tape measure, laser measurer, etc.) are used.
Embodiments of another aspect comprise An apparatus for generating spacing members, the apparatus comprising: a layout determining unit configured to determine a layout of a plurality of frames within a perimeter, the perimeter and each of the plurality of frames being rectangular, wherein a top and bottom edge of each frame and the perimeter are parallel to one another, and a left-hand and right-hand edge of each frame and the perimeter are parallel to one another, the layout defining the spatial relation of the plurality of frames to one another and to the perimeter; an assigning unit configured to assign one frame from among the plurality of frames as an origin frame, the remaining frames being assigned as non-origin frames; a spacing member generating unit, configured to, for each of the non-origin frames: generate a non-origin spacing member, the non-origin spacing member being a physical member shaped to receive a particular corner of the frame and a particular corner of a parent frame from among the plurality of frames at a fixed spatial relation to one another in accordance with the layout, the parent frame being either the origin frame or a non-origin frame at a fixed spatial relation to the origin frame via one or more of the generating spacing members.
Detailed Description A detailed description of a method embodying the present invention will now be set out, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 illustrates a layout and spacing members according to an embodiment.
Based on the dimensions of a space to be occupied by a plurality of frames, such as a wall, a layout of the frames is determined such that the location of each frame can be expressed as a fixed distance away from either A) a single “origin point” on the wall which is predetermined, for example the top-left corner, or B) a "parent frame”. The layout is a physical relation between physical entities that may be defined by or expressed by data, or by a graphical representation of the physical entities.
The location of every frame on the wall can thus be related to the “origin point" either directly (in the case of one frame only, herein the “origin frame”), or else via its parent, which in turn will have its own parent, and so on until one arrives back at the “origin frame”. A map of the layout is created along with a series of specifically-sized geometric “L” and "T" shapes. The map represents the layout and as such may be an electronic (that is, data) representation of the layout or may be a physical graphical representation of the layout. The “L” shape is exemplary of an origin spacing member. An “L” shaped spacing member may also be any shape incorporating an L shape, or any shape accommodating (i.e. surrounding on two edges) a corner (such as a right angle corner) with two accommodating edges and optionally having an parallel edge parallel to one of the two accommodating edges. In use, the two accommodating edges receive the corner of a frame and the parallel edge abuts another frame. The “T” shapes are exemplary of nonorigin spacing members. A “T” shaped spacing member may also be any shape incorporating a T shape, or any shape accommodating (i.e. surrounding on two edges) two distinct corners (such as two right angle corners), accommodating each corner with two accommodating edges and optionally having a parallel edge parallel to one of the two accommodating edges. The two distinct corners may be facing or opposing one another. In use, each pair of accommodating edges receive the corner of a frame. The “L” and “T” shapes are physical shapes made of a material. An exemplary material is foam board. They are coated on one side with an adhesive sufficiently strong that the shape can be stuck to and removed from a wall multiple times with ease. Spacing members may be provided with double-sided adhesive tape on a surface opposing the wall in use.
Methods embodying the invention may be performed in the presence of the plurality of frames or may be performed in the absence of the plurality of frames. The frames may be pre-prepared with adhesive mounting stickers, for example “command strips” (registered Trade Mark}. The spacing members may be generated and supplied to a user to guide the mounting of the frames to a wall. The spacing members may be supplied with pre-applied adhesive strips which allow the temporary fixing of the spacing members to the wall. Adhesive strips retain the spacing member in the affixed position until it is removed by the user to be re-used elsewhere in the layout.
Figure 1 illustrates a layout and spacing members on the layout. An "L” shape is placed onto the wall so that its outer corner is at the “origin point”. The size of the “L” shape has been specifically determined so that its inner corner is at a precise location relative to its outer corner, the latter of which is at the “origin point”. Alternatively, an origin point may be coincident with a corner of a frame, so that the frame is an origin frame, but no “L” shape spacing member is required. A specified corner of the first frame (“origin frame”} is positioned so that it fits into the inner corner of the “L" shape.
The spacing members are dimensioned so that when a corresponding frame is pressed to the wall and becomes attached, for example, by means of the adhesive mounting stickers, the spacing member can be removed without damaging the surface of the wall. By repeating this process for each pair of frame and corresponding spacing member, the determined layout can be realised on a wall. A spirit level temporarily attached to an edge of a frame may be used during this process to ensure the level orientation of each frame. Where the spacing between corners of several frames in the layout is the same, the corresponding spacing member may be re-used, thus reducing the number of spacing members required to complete the layout. Spacing members intended for re-use may be highlighted to the user, for example through colour-coding.
The generated spacing members are dimensioned so that once the “origin frame" has been attached as described, a “T” shape of predetermined size is placed onto the wall so that one inner corner of the "T" shape is fitted around one corner of the “origin frame”. The “T” shape is of specific dimensions so that one inner corner is at a precise location relative to its other inner corner. A “child frame” is then placed into the second inner corner of the “T” shape as shown in Figure 1.
This process is repeated until all frames have been mounted on the wall.
Embodiments include a plurality of rectangular perimeters being arranged adjacent to one another or partially overlapping with one another, with the method being repeated per perimeter to generate spacing members and a graphical layout (and optionally frames and printed images) for the plurality of rectangular perimeters. Optionally, if two perimeters partially overlap, a frame (at least partially) within the overlapping region may be assigned as the origin frame for each of the plurality (which may be two) of perimeters. A perimeter surrounds a wall space on which frames are to be hung.
