Abstract
A housing (case, container, capsule) for an RFID module, the housing taking the form/shape of a cylinder. The housing is moulded in a single piece but split in two halves. Each of the halves is linked by an integral/living hinge. The housing further has an oblong (rectangular, cuboid) shaped section arranged on each half of the cylindrical housing, the oblong segments having means for locking or securing the housing. The cylindrical part may be shaped to receive the RFID module. The securing means may be internal snap hooks or fingers mounted on one of the oblong parts which engage recesses on the opposing oblong part. The housing may not be openable once closed without destroying the housing. The housing may be made of nylon and may be weather proof. The oblong part may have a through hole to receive zip-ties or cable-ties
Description
Housing for an RFH) module
The use of RFID modules are widespread and have a variety of applications from tracking of goods and products through stages of a production line to tagging pets or providing access for personnel to restricted areas. A good example of the latter is disclosed in GB2398454 (Paxton). This document shows a zip tie which has a RFID housing attached to the strap. The housing is moulded with the module inserted and together with the zip tie or separately and joined on later.
Another similar system is disclosed in GB2477927 (Hellermann) where a RFID housing is moulded onto the head of a zip-tie. The housing is barrel shaped and can be closed off after inserting the module. The usual closure is sealing wax or resin to hold the module in place.
These arrangements have various disadvantages. The housing is permanently attached to the zip tie and the module is normally non replaceable. If the tie breaks or is damaged the housing and the module become unusable and will have to be replaced.
This invention will improve on the known RFID housings and hence their utility. The inventive RFID housing is moulded like a clam shell with a live hinge in between the two halves of the shell. The housing if molded in a one-step operation from resilient material such as nylon or any other suitable polyamide.
Such a “live hinge” is created by moulding the housing in its open position and forming a thin resilient section connecting the two halves, which thin section allows the two halves being folded against each other without breaking said thin section, thus forming the completed housing.
The housing has the shape of a cylinder with an oblong part moulded along its length. The live hinge runs along the cylinder part on the opposite side from the oblong part such that when opened, the two half cylinders are connected by the live hinge and the two half oblong parts are the further apart pieces.
The cylindrical part houses the module, which itself is enclosed in a weather proof casing, and is formed to a complimentary shape, allowing the module to be inserted at a close fit. That way, the electronics in the module are doubly protected against accidental or deliberate damage.
The oblong part comprises closure means and means for attachment of the closed and “ready for use” housing. The closure means consists of internal snap hooks on one half engaging with recesses in the other half to ensure a secure closure once the module is inserted. There may be two or more such snap hooks, one or more at each end of the oblong part, to ensure the proper closure of the housing.
The closure means may be arranged to allow for re-opening of the housing without damaging it or they may be arranged to prevent re-opening of the housing without destroying it.
The attachment means consist of a slot of suitable size through both halves of the oblong part of the housing, through which it may be attached to an object by means of a strap, a zip-tie or other suitable means.
The fact that the housing does not have a strap or zip-tie permanently attached to it, makes it particularly useful. If the strap breaks or the housing has been attached to wrong item, the broken strap can simply be removed and the RFID attached to the correct item with a new strap. This is particularly advantageous when zip-ties are used, which normally cannot be removed except by cutting off.
Moreover, with the possibility of the housing being moulded to be re-openable, a damaged or mal-functioning module can easily be changed and replaced by a different one.
The following is the description of the invention by means of the drawings, which are in no way limiting the invention and are purely illustrative of the concept behind the invention.
Fig 1 shows a side view of the housing in closed position
Fig 2 shows the housing closed and in end view
Fig 3 shows a plan view of the housing open with inside up
Fig 4 shows an end view of the housing open
Fig 5 shows a perspective view of the housing open
The dimensions given on the figures are indicative only of the relative dimensions of the housing parts and should not be taken as definite sizes of any part of the housing.
Figure 1 shows the inventive housing in side view whilst closed. The dotted lines indicate the compartment for the RFID module. The two outer squares indicate the locking means which will be described in more detail with the help of figures 4 and 5. The center rectangle indicates the through hole which serves to receive the means for attaching the housing to the object to be identified.
Figure 2 shows the housing of figure 1 in an end-on view. The cylindrical part encloses the module and the oblong part (lower) accommodates the locking and the attachment means, as will be described in more detail 4 and 5.
This drawing shows the surface of the oblong part facing away from the cylindrical part as curved inwards along the length of the oblong part. This is to ensure that the housing sits well located on the object to be identified, which most of the time will be round itself, such as cable bundles or the neck of a bag of some kind.
Figure 3 shows the housing open with the inside up and the live hinge holding the half cylinders together. The through holes, which will meet when the housing is closed are clearly shown and the locking means are indicated in the four corners of the drawing.
Figure 4 shows an end view of the housing in open position. One of the snap hooks is shown and it can be seen that upon closure that snap hook will engage the recess shown on the opposite clam-shell.
Figure 5 shows a perspective view of the open housing. Here two snap hooks are clearly visible on the right hand shell part and the recesses for completing the closure are visible on the left hand part.
The housing shown in these drawings is of the “re-usable” type. The non-reusable type of housing is almost identical to the re-usable one with the exception that the recesses on the left hand part will not be accessible from the outside of the housing, meaning that the holes shown will be blanked off on the outside of the housing thus blocking access to the snap hooks and turning the housing into a once-only type.
Since RFID modules come in different sizes, naturally the housings will be produced in the correct sizes to be able to accommodate the relevant module. The dimensions given on the drawings are meant to represent to most common size for RFID modules, and are not limiting in any way. They do, however, give an indication of the relative dimensions of the different parts of the housing.
