Abstract

253,990. Deeman, S. March 23, 1925. Rackets.-Tennis and like rackets are manufactured by bending the racket frame roughly to shape, applying the wedge (previously cut to its true shape) in position between the handle portions of the frame and securing by glue or otherwise, clamping the roughly constructed racket frame upon a gauge of determined contour, removing the excess material from the interior of the frame, clamping the frame upon another gauge and removing the excess material from the exterior of the frame. The racket frame a, Fig. 3, with the wedge a<1> in position is placed in the first gauge comprising a base c fitted with a sliding upper portion d. A wooden block d<2> is secured to the sliding portion, and two blocks c<4> are secured to the base so that the racket frame may be calmped between the blocks by operating a screw e. A central space c<1> corresponding to the inner contour of the racket frame is enclosed by the parts, and a, lap joint c<3> ensures un unbroken contour during adjustment. After clamping, the excess material is removed from the interior of the frame and from the upper edge of the wedge. The frame is now transferred to the gauge shown in Fig. 5, comprising a base plate f with a movable upper part g to which is attached a wooden block g<1> having a contour corresponding to the interior of the upper portion of the racket frame. The base plate f has two pairs of lugs f<1>, f<2> through which two bolts f<3> are arranged to slide. The bolts are secured at their upper ends to the movable part g. A cross bar h is slidably mounted on the bolts and carries a wooden block h<1> having an exterior contour corresponding to the interior of the lower portion of the racket frame. After positioning the racket frame on the blocks g', h', the blocks may be moved apart by rotating two cams g<2>, h<2> by a suitable operating key thus clamping the racket frame in readiness for trimming the outer contour. The cam g<2> effects the coarse adjustment, finer adjustment being effected by the cam h<2>. Springs i<1>, i<2> return the blocks after release by the cams. A pin f<5> acts as an additional guide for the lower block. The wedge piece a' is shaped before assembling within the frame, by the use of a known form of gauge shown in Fig. 2.
