Adding-machines.-Cards or plates such as address-printing plates adapted to be fed through a printing-machine are furnished with holes or stops differentially located to represent numbers so that in their travel through the machine they cause racks to have corresponding differential advancement to actuate a totalizing-counter. Each plate A is moved by feed-bars D to a constant position in the machine and by means of holes, engaging with upturned ends a<2> of rack-bars a, pushes the latter to the right to differential extents and so actuates adding type wheels b. The racks are pressed upwardly, to force the ends a<z> into the holes, by means of springs e, and the racks are depressed and restored to normal position by a bar E adapted to ride up on the camrail portions a<4>. Transfer-mechanism-At transfer a cam nose e<3> forces the bar e to the right so as to place a shoulder e<4> in the path of one of a number of shoulders disposed in echelon around a shaft h. The bar carries a pawl e<2> offset to engage the receiving-pinion of the next higher numeral wheel, so that when shaft h is subsequently rotated, say by the return of the feed-bars D, the displaced bar e is returned to normal position and transfer effected. To prevent overthrow a lug e<6> engages a notch in the higher type-wheel at the end of the stroke of the bar and is afterwards disengaged by the action of a spring g.
