However, vests are relatively unfashionable and can appear unsightly, especially though lighter shirt materials. Cardigans and jumpers are often deemed to be unacceptable work attire. Furthermore, for the elderly and disabled vasts and jumpers and be difficult to put on.
The present invention seeks to address these issues.
According to the present invention there is provided a shirt comprising: a main housing for a torso, the main housing having a front and a back, an upper neck opening and a hem at a lower opening; sleeves; wherein the main housing comprises an inner lining on its front and back configured to insulate front and back of the torso of a wearer.
In some embodiments the inner lining extends across substantially the full width of the front and back of the main housing so as to insulate sides of the 25 torso.
In some embodiments the inner lining extends from adjacent the neck opening so as to insulate shoulders of the torso.
In some embodiments the inner lining extends down the front of the main housing from adjacent the neck opening to a point set back from the hem such that an unlined portion of the front is provided adjacent the hem.
In some embodiments the inner lining extends down the back of the main housing from adjacent the neck opening to a point set back from the hem such that an unlined portion of the back is provided adjacent the hem.
In some embodiments the inner lining extends down the front of the main housing from adjacent the neck opening to a point configured to be above the hips of a wearer.
In some embodiments the inner lining extends down the back of the main housing from adjacent the neck opening to a point configured to be above the hips of a wearer.
In some embodiments the inner lining is substantially in a waistcoat configuration.
In some embodiments the shirt comprises a releasably closable opening extending down the front of the main housing from the neck opening to the lower opening.
In some embodiments the releasably closable opening is a buttoned opening.
In some embodiments the shirt comprises a collar.
In some embodiments the shirt comprises long sleeves and cuffs.
In some embodiments the shirt comprises short sleeves.
In some embodiments the shirt is a dress shirt.
In some embodiments the main housing and sleeves of the shirt comprise a fabric selected from the group of cotton, cotton moleskin, brushed cotton, cotton/silk blend, cotton/polyester blend, silk, kapok.
In some embodiments the inner lining comprises a fabric selected from the group of cotton, cotton moleskin, brushed cotton, cotton/silk blend, cotton/polyester blend, silk, kapok.
In some embodiments the inner lining comprises a fabric that is lighter than the fabric forming the main housing and sleeves.
In some embodiments the inner lining comprises a fabric that is thicker than the fabric forming the main housing and sleeves.
In order that the present invention may be more fully understood a specific embodiment will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which: Figure 1 is a front view of a shirt made in accordance with the present invention; Figure 2 is a front view of the shirt of Figure 1 with first half of the front opened; Figure 3 is a front view of the shirt of Figure 1 with second half of the front opened; Figure 4 is a front view of the shirt of Figure 1 turned inside out; and Figure 5 is a rear view of the shirt of Figure 1 turned inside out.
Referring to the drawings, a shirt 1 comprises main housing 2 having a front 3 25 formed of first and second sides 3a, 3b and a back 4. Back 4 of shirt 1 comprises a shirt yoke (not shown for clarity and brevity).
Shirt 1 also comprises first and second sleeves 5a, 5b.
At an upper end of shirt 1 is neck opening 6 surrounded by collar 7.
At lower end of shirt 1 is a lower opening 8 defined by hem 9.
Collar 7 is openable and releasably closable by means of button 10.
A frontal opening extending between neck opening 6 and lower opening 8 and between first and second sides 3a, 3b of main housing 2 is openable and releasably closable by means of a plurality of buttons 11.
In the present embodiment main housing 2, sleeves 5a, 5b and collar 7 are formed of cotton fabric.
Thus, shirt 1 as described thus far may be seen to be a standard dress shirt.
Housing 2 of shirt 1 also, however, comprises an inner lining 12.
Inner lining 12 extends down the inside of the front 3 and back 4 of main housing 2 from collar 7 to a point 13 set back from hem 9.
Point 13 is a point that is configured to be above the hips of an average wearer of shirt 1 when shirt 1 is in use. Thus of main housing 2 there remains unlined a portion 14 of back 4 and respective portions 15a 15b of front 3.
Unlined portions 14, 15a, 15b of main housing 2 may be tucked into the trousers of a user when shirt 1 is in use. Thus it is beneficial that lower portions 14, 15a, 15b of shirt 1 are unlined so as to avoid unnecessary bulk being tucked into a wearer's trousers.
It will be apparent, however, that if so desired in other embodiments a lining might extend down the front and back of a main housing such that it terminates adjacent the lower opening of the shirt.
Lining 12 terminates adjacent the openings to sleeves 5a, 5b such that said sleeves remain unlined.
As is desirable in the present embodiment inner lining 12 covers and insulates the front, back, shoulders and sides of the torso of a wearer of shirt 1. As such lining 4 might be considered to be substantially in a waistcoat configuration.
It will be apparent however, that in other embodiments a lining might be provided on just the front and back of a shirt with, for example sides and shoulders of a main housing remaining unlined. Other configurations of lining 5 would of course be possible.
In the present embodiment inner lining 12 is formed of a cotton/silk blend for comfort of the wearer but any suitable material may of course be employed.
In the present embodiment inner lining 12 is attached to main housing by stitching but in other embodiments other means of attachment such as adhesive might be employed.
It will be recognized that although the present invention is particularly 15 advantageous in respect of dress shirts the invention may be employed with other forms of shirt such as sports shirts.
Many variations are possible without departing from the scope of the present invention as defined in the appended claims.
