Abstract

A preparation comprising a paste or solution containing one or more essential oils and non-reducing sugar for application to wounds. The sugar is preferably sucrose and may be obtained from sugar beet or sugar cane. The sugar may have particles of equivalent size to granulated sugar caster sugar or icing sugar. The preparation may be applied to wounds to aid wound healing, reduce odour, and may have antibacterial, antifungal or antiviral properties. The preparation may also be applied to, or incorporated into dressings for application to wounds. The preparation may be used to treat wounds in humans or animals.

Description

This invention relates to preparations combining sugar with essential oils for the treatment of wounds and related conditions. These preparations combine the wound healing properties of sugar with the antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties of essential oils in a suitable formulation for application to wounds or to be incorporated into dressings to be applied to wounds for medical or veterinary use.
Background Sugar
The use of sugar to treat wounds has been known since ancient times. The use of sugar to promote wound healing is well established ( Biswas A, Bharara M. Hurst C, Gruessner R, Armstrong D, RHo H. Use of Sugar on the Healing of Diabetic Ulcers A Review. journal of Diabetes Science and Technology. 2010:4(5)1139-1145.) The use of thick and thin sugar pastes to promote wound healing has been reported at Northwick Park Hospital (Harrow UK) (V1iddieton,K and Seal,D Pharmaceutic°Haan-in./4985: 235 757-758.) They used varying combinations of caster and icing sugar, polyethylene glycol and hydrogen peroxide.
Essential oils Essential oils are volatile oils derived from plants or animals or their synthetic equivalents containing complex mixtures of compounds. The essential oils which may be incorporated into these preparations include, hut are not limited to, citronella, eucalyptus, geranium, lavender, lemongrass, orange, rosemary, palmarosa, patchouli, and peppermint.
Essential oils have been widely used in folk medicine to aid wound-healing. More recent research has shown their beneficial effects on wound healing. Eucalyptus oil has anti-inflammatory effects (Silva et al, Journal of Efhnophormocology 2003: 89 (2-3)277-283).
In addition some essential oils have antibacterial and antifungal activity (Carmen G, Hancu G. Antimicrobial and Antifungai Activity of Pc/argon/urn roseurn Essential Oils. Advanced Pharmaceutical Bulletin. 20114;4(Suppl 4.51.1.-5114. doi:113.5681/apb.2014.075.) Essential oils may also possess antiviral properties (Pilau MR, Alves SH, Weiblen R, Arenhart 5, Cueto AP, Lovato LT. Antiviral activity of the Lipplo groveolens (Mexican oregano) essential oil and its main compound carvacrol against human and animal viruses. Brazilian Journal of Microbiology. 2011;42(4):16116-2624.)
Description
The present invention comprises a solution or paste of non-reducing sugar, one or more essential oils and glycerol or polyethylene glycol. In addition water may be added to improve the theological properties of the mixture, the more water present the less viscous the product.
Additional components may be added to the preparation to improve the colour, stability or appearance of the preparation. In particular a buffer may be added to ensure the pH of the product is between 3.5 and 6.5 to improve the stability of the preparation and prevent separation of the phases.
The preparation is made by mixing the ingredients at room temperature. For small quantities the preparation may be made by mixing the ingredients in a pestle and mortar. For larger quantities the preparation may be made by mixing the ingredients in a food mixer. Usually the glycerol or polyethylene glycol is added to the sugar and mixed, with the essential oils added at the last stage of mixing. Water may also be incorporated during mixing to improve the rheological properties of the mixture. In general a thick paste is preferred for direct application to wounds or spreading onto a wound dressing. Thinner pastes may be used to fill deeper wounds or fistulas.
The preparation may be stored in a glass or plastic ointment jar. Thicker pastes may be stored in plastic or metal ointment tubes. The preparation may be stored at room temperature although in some examples the preparation may be refrigerated to improve stability.
The following are non-limiting embodiments of the invention:
Example 1
Caster sugar 200gm Icing sugar 300gm Glycerol 375m1 Lavender oil 10m1 The sugars are mixed to form a powder. The glycerol is added with stirring to form a smooth paste to which the essential oil is added with stirring.
The preparation may be used for application to wounds or to be incorporated into dressings to be applied to wounds for medical or veterinary use.
Example 2.
Caster sugar 200gm Icing sugar 300gm Glycerol 500m1 Lavender oil 10m1 The sugars are mixed to form a powder. The glycerol is added with stirring to form a smooth paste to which the essential oil is added with stirring.
The preparation may be used for application to wounds or to be incorporated into dressings to be applied to wounds for medical or veterinary use. This produces a thinner paste suitable for cavities.
Example 3.
Caster sugar 200gm Icing sugar 300gm Glycerol 375m1 Lavender oil 8m1 Rosemary oil 2m1 The sugars are mixed to form a powder. The glycerol is added with stirring to form a smooth paste to which the essential oils are added with stirring.
This example uses a combination of essential oils. The preparation may be used for application to wounds or to be incorporated into dressings to be applied to wounds for medical or veterinary use.
Example 4.
Caster sugar 200gm Icing sugar 300gm Glycerol 375m1 Lavender oil 20m1 The sugars are mixed to form a powder. The glycerol is added with stirring to form a smooth paste to which the essential oil is added with stirring.
The preparation may be used for application to wounds or to be incorporated into dressings to be applied to wounds for medical or veterinary use.
Example 5.
Caster sugar 200gm Icing sugar 300gm Glycerol 30m1 Water 30m1 Lavender oil 10m1 The sugars are mixed to form a powder. The glycerol is added with stirring to form a smooth paste to which the essential oil is added with stirring.
The preparation may be used for application to wounds or to be incorporated into dressings to be applied to wounds for medical or veterinary use.
Example 6
Preparations of the examples 1-5, mainly example 1 were applied to dressings and changed daily. The preparations were used on a variety of wounds. In all cases excellent and rapid wound healing was observed. There were no cases of infection in any of the wounds to which the preparation was applied.
