Abstract
253,608. Risberg, J. V. M. March 19, 1925. Refrigerating, compression machines for. - A diaphragm compressor actuated by liquid under pressure admitted and discharged through a valve which is shifted by mechanism actuated by the liquid without dependence on any moving parts of the compressor is used in a refrigerating plant. The compressor is regulated automatically in accordance with the pressure and temperature of the gas in the evaporator. Figure 1 shows a diaphragm compressor combined with a closed circuit refrigerating system. The diaphragm is held betweeen upper and lower discs, the lower disc being provided with inlet and outlet valves for the gas, while the upper disc is in connection with a water supply. The compressed gas is cooled in a coil 9 by the operating water supply, and thus liquefied : it is expanded through a valve 15 and evaporated in a coil 14 to effect refrigeration, and passes back to the compressor. Water passes tc the upper side of the diaphragm by way of a valve 19 operated by a diaphragm 20 subjected to the pressure of a spring 21 on one side, and on the other side connected with water supply and discharge passages 30, 31, alternately opened and closed by a valve plate 25 rocked by a plate spring 24 operated from the diaphragm 20 through a plunger 23 and lever 22. The valve 19 alternately connects the water space above the diaphragm with the inlet and with passage 33 by which the water flows around the coils 41 to an outlet pipe 36. Several refrigerating installations of this construction may be provided in a building, their inlet pipes being connected to the outlet of a pump drawing water from a tank in the basement, and their discharge pipes leading to a common pipe from which water flows in jets cooled by the air into the tank. If the water pressure is insuffcient to liquify ammonia at the water temperature another gas such as sulphur dioxide may be used. If the water pressure is higher than is necessary for this purpose, the water consumption may be reduced by interposing a differential piston 50, Fig. 3, between the water supply and the compressor, the space between the piston and the compressor being filled with water. Excess water in this space leakspast the piston to the exhaust; if too much water should escape, the fall of the piston opens a valved passage 57 to the upper side of the piston and raises the piston again. The working of the water supply valve is regulated in accordance with the temperature and pressure desired in the evaporator by providing a diaphragm 69, Fig. 3, open to an extent regulated by a screw 79 to the pressure of the gas returning to the compressor. The diaphragm acts on a lever 71 to close the exhaust from the water supply diaphragm through the pipe 60, against a spring 75. The compressor will continue in action, the water exhausting periodically through the pipe 35 to the condenser, unless the temperature and pressure fall so low that the diaphragm is unable to close the exhaust through the pipe 60. When this occurs, the compressor remains out of action until the pressure again rises.
