Description

Panel configured to be attached to an outside of a vehicle component, arrangement of a panel and method for attaching a panel The invention relates to a panel which is configured to be attached to an outside of a vehicle component. The panel comprises a main body and at least one flange provided at an edge of the main body. At least one tab extends from the at least one flange. The invention further relates to an arrangement of such a panel and to a method for attaching the panel.
Document US 7 770 955 B2 describes an automotive closure panel assembly which includes an inner panel and an outer panel. The outer panel has a flange that protrudes from a body of the outer panel. A plurality of tabs are spaced along the flange, wherein each tab extends away from the flange. For fixing the outer panel to the inner panel the tabs are folded over the inner panel during a hemming process. The outer panel may be composed of steel or steel alloys.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a panel, an arrangement and a method of the initially mentioned kind which allows for a particularly pleasing visual appearance and an easy attachment of the panel.
This object if solved by a panel having the features of claim 1, by an arrangement having the features of claim 7 and by a method having the features of claim 8. Advantageous configurations with convenient further developments of the invention are specified in the dependent claims.
The panel according to the invention is configured to be attached to an outside of a vehicle component, in particular to the outside of an aerodynamic fairing of a truck. The panel comprises a main body and at least one flange provided at an edge of the main body. At least one tab extends from the at least one flange. The panel is made from stainless steel. As the panel has the at least one tab, the attachment of the stainless steel decorative panel to the vehicle component without visible external fasteners is possible, in particular the attachment to the aerodynamic fairing of a chassis of the truck. Thus, a very pleasing visual appearance of the panel and an easy attachment of the panel are achieved.
Further, the design criteria of no visible external fasteners are achieved. This is due to the fact that no loose fasteners of any kind are needed. The assembly of such a panel, i.e. the arrangement of the panel to the vehicle component, does not require the use of any tools. However, assembly aids may be utilized for an assured quality of stainless steel appearance. Also, allowing the stainless steel panel to conform to the shape of the vehicle component, in particular to a plastic panel, eliminates the need for any form die tooling.
By providing the stainless steel panel as an optional equipment, the vehicle component, in particular the aerodynamic fairing of the cassis of the truck, can be readily provided with brightwork in form of the panel. As the tabs can be bent towards the main body of the panel in order to attach the panel to the vehicle component, the use of caustic adhesives can be avoided. Further, the method of attachment passes all durability and reliability targets. In addition, the installation meets quality and manufacturing standards.
Preferably, the at least one tab comprises a detent element for pre-securing the panel to the vehicle component by inserting the at least one tab into a slot provided in the vehicle component. The detent element, which can in particular be formed as a bead in the tab, provides a retention feature upon initial insertion of the tab into the slot. Also, the detent element provides fulcrum for folding or bending the tab. Finally, the detent element or detent feature limits paint marring during the insertion of the tab into the slot. Therefore, if paint is present on the vehicle component to be provided with the panel, damage to the paint by inserting the at least one tab into the corresponding slot can be avoided.
The at least one tab can have a void for facilitating a bending of the tab towards the main body of the panel after insertion of the at least one tab into the slot provided in the vehicle component. Providing the void for ease of bending therefore renders the installation of the panel particularly easy.
The at least on tab can have an opening which is configured to accommodate a tool for bending the tab towards the main body of the panel. Thus, by means of a simple hand tool which engages the opening, bending or folding the tabs and therefore securing the panel to the vehicle component is facilitated.
Preferably, the at least one flange is formed as a bent flange provided at an upper edge of the main body and at a lower edge of the main body, respectively. Herein, edges of the main body adjacent to the upper edge and to the lower edge, respectively, are free of flanges. Thus, the design of the panel is particularly simple.
Preferably, the panel has a thickness of less than one millimeter. For example the thickness of the panel can be about 0.03 inches. This renders the panel particularly lightweight and facilitates attaching the panel to the vehicle component.
For an appealing appearance it has proven advantageous, if the panel is polished and/or provided with a protective film.
The arrangement according to the invention comprises a panel according to the invention which is attached to an aerodynamic fairing of a truck on an outside of the aerodynamic fairing. Herein, the aerodynamic fairing can be made from plastic, in particular painted plastic For example the panel can be attached to a plastic chassis fairing of the truck. The panel provides the arrangement with a pleasing visual appearance and is easy to attach to the fairing.
In the method according to the invention for attaching a panel to an outside of a vehicle component, in particular to the outside of an aerodynamic fairing of a truck, the panel comprises a main body and at least one flange provided at an edge of the main body. At least on tab extends from the at least one flange, and stainless steel is utilized as material for the panel.
Preferably, the at least one tab is inserted into a slot provided in the vehicle component in a first step. In a second step the at least one tab is bent towards the main body.
The advantages and preferred embodiments described with respect to the panel according to the invention also apply to the arrangement according to the invention and to the method according to the invention and vice versa.
The features and feature combinations mentioned above in the description as well as the features and feature combinations mentioned below in the description of figures and/or shown in the figures alone are usable not only in the respectively specified combination, but also in other combinations or alone, without departing from the scope of the invention. Thus, implementations are also to be considered as encompassed and disclosed by the invention, which are not explicitly shown in the figures or explained, but arise from and can be generated by separated feature combinations from the explained implementations. Therefore also embodiments and feature combinations shall be considered as disclosed, which do not have all the features of an originally drafted independent claim.
Further advantages, features and details of the invention are apparent from the claims, the following description of preferred embodiments as well as based on the drawings. Therein show: Fig. 1 a perspective view of a section of a truck, wherein an aerodynamic fairing is provided at a chassis of the truck, and wherein two stainless steel panels are arranged at the fairing; Fig. 2 a view along an upper edge of one of the panels in a direction indicated by an arrow in fig. 1; Fig. 3 a side view of the portion of the panel shown in fig. 2; Fig. 4 a lower edge of the panel seen from the direction indicated by the arrow in fig. 1; Fig. 5 a side view of the portion of the panel shown in fig. 4; Fig. 6 a perspective view of one of the panels; Fig. 7 an enlarged view of one of the tabs provides at the upper flange and the lower flange of the panel, respectively; Fig. 8 a top view of the panel; and Fig. 9 a side view of the panel before an attachment of the panel to the fairing.
Fig. 1 shows a section of a vehicle in the form of a truck 10. Herein a chassis (not shown) of the truck 10 is provided with a fairing or cladding which improves the aerodynamics of the truck 10. The fairing 10 extends along a side of the truck 10, in the example shown in fig. 1 from a wheelhouse 14 towards a rear end of chassis of the truck 10. A first stainless steel panel 16 and a second stainless steel panel 18 are attached to an outside of the fairing 12. The first panel 16 is arranged in the area of steps 20 of the truck 10 below a door 22 of the truck 10. The second panel 18 is arranged further to the rear end of the truck 10 and adjacent to the first panel 16.
The panels 16, 18 are attached to the fairing 12 without using any visible external fastener. To achieve this, the panels 16, 18 each have an upper bent flange 24 (see fig. 2) and a lower bent flange 26 (see fig.4). The flanges 24, 26 are arranged at an upper edge and at a lower edge of a main body 28 of the panels 16, 18, respectively. The panels 16, 18 with the flanges 24, 26 are formed from a large flat sheet of stainless steel.
In fig. 1 an arrow 30 indicates a direction from which the second panel 18 is seen in a perspective view in fig. 2. As can be seen from fig. 2 and fig. 3, at least one tab 32 extends from the upper flange 24. This tab 32 is inserted into a slot 34 present in the aerodynamic chassis fairing 12, which is made from plastic in the embodiment shown in fig. 1.
As can be seen from fig. 6, preferably a plurality of such tabs 32 are provided at the upper flange 24 and the lower flange 26, respectively. For example four tabs 32 can be arranged equally spaced from each other at the upper flange 24 and at the lower flange 26, respectively.
In fig. 6 and in fig. 9 the tabs 32 are shown before they have been bent or folded towards the main body 28. In this status of installation of the panels 16, 18 the tabs 32 or tongues extend substantially perpendicular to the main body 28. Once the tabs 32 are inserted into the slots 34, the tabs 32 are folded over at least 90'to secure or attach the stainless steel panels 16, 18 to the plastic chassis fairing 12. This folding action secures the stainless steel panels 16, 18 to the fairing 12 or fairing panel.
Fig. 3 shows one of the tabs 32 in its folded or bent position. From this side view a bead 36 provided in each tab 32 can particularly well be seen. The bead 36 acts as a detent element or detent feature which provides for a retention of the panel 16, 18 upon the initial insertion of the tabs 32 into the slots 34. Each bead 36 also provides a fulcrum for folding the tab 32.
Fig. 4 and fig. 5 show the analogous insertion of one of the tabs 32 into a corresponding slot 34 provided in the fairing 12 at the lower flange 26 of the panel 18. From fig. 5 and from fig. 6 it can also be seen that no flanges or tabs are provided at edges 38 of the main body 28, which are adjacent to the upper flange 24 and the lower flange 26.
Fig. 7 shows one of the tabs 32 in a top view before the tab 32 has been bent. As can be seen from fig. 7, each tab 32 has a larger, for example rectangular void 40 which facilitates the bending of the tab 32. A further, smaller hole or opening 42 in the tab 32 allows to insert a hand tool for bending the tab 32.
From fig. 8 it can particularly well be seen that the panels 16, 18 have a rather small thickness, for example a thickness of about 0.03 inches or 22 ga.
From fig. 9 it is apparent that a thickness of the panels 16, 18 in the area of the main body 28 corresponds to a thickness of the panels 16, 18 in the area of the flanges 32. In other words the panels 16, 18 preferably have a uniform thickness.
The stainless steel panels 16, 18 are preferably applied to the fairings 12 after painting the fairings 12. The tabs 32 of the stainless steel panels 16, 18 or brightwork panels 16, 18 are pushed through the slots 34 provided in the fairing 12 or fairing panel. Subsequently, i.e. after insertion, the tabs 32 are folded over in order to secure the panels 16, 18 to the fairing 12.
