Abstract

A tactile paving tile having a chamfered edge. The chamfered edge slopes from the top surface to the lower surface, creating a gentle incline. The edge can be smooth, or may be abraded with hosizontal lines, cross hatching, sand blasting, or have a resin coating, to provide an anti-slip finish. The chamfered edge can be between 0-150mm in width and 0-20mm in height, and runs along the length of the paving tile. The tactile paving tile is for use in rail stations, pedestrian crossings, staircases, tram way or bus stops, cycle paths and guidance paths. The tactile surface has a different design depending on the area of use.

Description

Chamfered Edge Tactile Paving Description
This specification relates to tactile paving tiles as described and set out by the department for transport in particular.
There is a UK wide standard for the design and use of tactile paving in many given and determined formats, off set blister for rail stations, highway blister for pedestrian crossings, hazard corduroy for staircases, lozenge for tram way or bus tops, cycle path and guidance path. Used both internally and externally.
Current tactile paving when surface mounted presents a tripping hazard as most tiles are between 37m thick.
Fig 1 (prior art) shows a current design demonstrating the current tripping hazard as when approached it is possible for a pedestrian to catch their leading toe, front of foot on the edge of the tactile paving.
Current tactile paving only presents a small angled section along the top layer (again see fig 1 prior art).
This problem is increased even more when the tactile paving is applied to an uneven substrate therefore increasing the potential tripping hazard.
There is therefore a need to produce tactile paving that vastly reduces any potential tripping hazard.
According to the invention there is a method and design of making a tactile paving tile that has a chamfered edge of anywhere between Omm-150mm in longitudinal length and between 0mm20mm in height.
According to the first variation of the method and design the tactile paving tile is cast and produced in such a way so as it provides a gradual chamfered edge tapering down from the highest point of the base of the tactile paving tile down to the chosen substrate of which it is to be applied, therefore providing a much safer tactile paving tile for pedestrians to approach.
According to a second variation of the method and design this chamfered section can be abraded I such a way by way of adding horizontal or cross hatched lines or etched or sand or shot blasted, over coated with anti-slip resin in such a way so as it also provides an anti-slip finish.
For a clearer understanding of the invention and to show how it may be carried into effect, reference will now be made by way of example only to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1(prior art) is a side elevation of a prior art tactile paving tile.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the new method and design of the invention showing the chamfered edge of between Omm-150mm in length which could result in a tile of up to 700mm in length.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the new method and design of the invention showing the chamfered edge of between Omm-20mm in height which may be required in extreme circumstances.
Figure 3 shows the chamfered edge running along the length of the tile.
