Abstract

253,425. Kalin, F. Nov. 26, 1925. Diving-chambers; air locks and submarine escape chambers.-Apparatus for rescuing the crews of disabled submarine vessels comprises a diving-chamber A with propellers and steering gear, connected to a salvage ship by means of a cable 9, and having at the bow a cylindrical extension through which communication may be established with the submarine. The extension consists of three compartments B, C, D, of which the lower compartment D is detachable. The chamber A is provided with propellers 6, 7, electric motors 2, to which current is supplied through the cable 9, pumps 2a, windows 4 and a searchlight 5. At the bow an opening 13, closable by a cover, communicates with the compartment B of the extension, which is so connected to the chamber that it may be rotated about the longitudinal axis of the chamber bv means of a hand-wheel 30. The lowermost compartment D is open at the bottom and is provided round the lower end with a flange 21 of flexible material such as rubber adapted to fit around the hatch 26 of a submarine. The compartments B, C, D are separated by partitions 15, 18, having hatchways with covers. When the chamber has been worked into position and the extension adjusted so that the flange 21 fits round tho hatchway 26 of the submarine, valves 24, 16 in the partitions 18 and 15 respectively are opened, and the water in the compartments is pumped out through pipes 25<1>, 25<11> and a valve 23 in the wall 17 of the compartment C. The pressure of the external water then forces the flange 21 into close contact with the hull of the submarine and makes a watertight joint. The hatches in the partitions 15. 18 and the hatch 26 of the submarine are then opened and the crew pass into the diving chamber. A crane 29 is provided to facilitate rescue work. and a drill 28 driven through a flexible shaft from a motor 27 may be used to cut an opening in the submarine if necessary. If work has to be suspended. the ratches of the compartments are shut and the connection between the wall 17 of the compartment C and the wall 20 of the compartment D is removed, releasing the chamber A and leaving the compartment D attached to the submarine by the water pressure
