Abstract
A Thermal and Sound Insulating Panel, comprising of a rigid front wall 3, rear wall 4, top wall 5, bottom wall 6 and side walls 7, which completely enclose a vacuum 1. The front wall and rear wall are thick in comparison to the thickness (depth) of the vacuum cavity, in order to help to withstand the external crushing forces due to atmospheric pressure. Rigid strengtheners 2 connecting the front wall and rear wall are positioned where necessary, in order to help to withstand the external crushing forces due to atmospheric pressure. The Thermal and Sound Insulating Panel is to be made from thermal insulating material, predominantly.
Description
DESCRIPTION.
TITLE.
Insulating Panel.
BACKGROUND.
This invention relates to a Thermal and Sound Insulating Panel.
In cold weather, some of the heat generated by the heating system of a building may be lost through the floors, walls, doors, windows, ceilings and roofs of that building.
Also, in hot weather, some of the "coldness" generated by the air conditioning system of a building may be lost through the floors, walls, doors, windows, ceilings and roofs of that building.
STATEMENT OF INVENTION.
To overcome this, the present invention proposes a Thermal and Sound Insulating Panel, the rigid front, rear, top, bottom and side walls of which completely enclose a vacuum.
ADVANTAGES.
The vacuum breaks the thermal conduction path between the front wall and the rear wall of the Thermal and Sound Insulating Panel.
The Thermal and Sound Insulating Panels are used in the floors, walls, doors, windows, ceilings and roofs of buildings in order to prevent the loss of heat in cold weather and to prevent the loss of "coldness" in hot weather.
INTRODUCTION TO DRAWING.
An example of the invention will now be described by referring to the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 shows a Thermal and Sound Insulating Panel according to the invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION.
The rigid front wall 3, rear wall 4, top wall 5, bottom wall 6 and side walls 7 of the Thermal and Sound Insulating Panel completely enclose a vacuum 1.
The front wall 3 and rear wall 4 are thick in comparison to the thickness (depth) of the vacuum cavity 1, in order to help to withstand the external crushing forces due to atmospheric pressure.
The vacuum cavity 1 need only be sufficiently thick (deep) to effectively break the thermal conduction path between the front wall 3 and the rear wall 4 of the Thermal and Sound Insulating Panel.
Rigid strengtheners 2 connecting the front wall 3 and rear wall 4 are positioned where necessary, in order to help to withstand the external crushing forces due to atmospheric pressure.
The Thermal and Sound Insulating Panel is to be made from thermal insulating material, predominantly. Some components may have an overriding requirement, for strength, for example. In such cases, these components may have to be made from non thermal insulating material.
The Thermal and Sound Insulating Panel may be optimised for use as either a thermal insulating panel or a sound insulating panel, by changing the materials from which it is made. i.e. A thermal insulating panel would be made using thermal insulating material and a sound insulating panel would be made using sound insulating material.
