Flexible unjointed hinges. -A flexible joint or a connecting-link, applicable to shock absorbers, &c., comprises a flexible cable ccnnecting two rigid members so as to allow bending and twisting movements there between. And means such as a coiled spring or springs tending to force the rigid members apart. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, the flexible cable 13 passes through a tubular rod or link 10 and compression springs 14, 15 seated against collars 23, 24 thereon, and is secured at its ends to the members 19 to be connected, these members being formed with caps or bosses 11, 12 provided with seating recesses 17 for the springs and countersunk openings 16 through which the .cable ends are passed. The projecting cable ends are preferably bent back and inserted in lateral recesses 25, Fig. 5, being secured therein by sweating, brazing, soldering, &c., the solder 26 filling the countersinking 18 and the inner end of the opening 25. In a modification, one member 19 is directly connected to or formed integrally with the tube 10. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 8, a solid rod 40 may form the connecting link, a short length of cable enclosed by a spring serving to connect one or both ends thereof to the member or members to be coupled. The cable lengths 52, Fig. 10, are provided with threaded sleeves 53 compressed thereon, and are screwed at one end into nuts or sleeves 43 adjustably secured on the rod 40 by lock nuts 44, whilst at the other end they are threaded into openings 54 in the end caps and secured by lock nuts 55. The spring or springs 46 may be placed under desired compression by rotating one of the joint members before the lock nuts are screwed up.
