Description
Gym Spirit Patent Application This invention relates to a device for facilitating correct weight lifting form in gymnasiums.
Weight lifting is by nature a strenuous activity and one that, therefore, brings with it a risk of injury.
The risk of injury is particularly acute during compound movements such as bench press, bicep curls and skull crushes. The risk of injury is increased drastically by uneven lifting. This is where the user pushes the weight more with one arm than the other, which puts added stress on one side of the body. This is closely linked with injury and creates an imbalance in muscle development that can also create or exacerbate existing muscle imbalance.
In order to overcome this problem, the present invention proposes a spirit level that is either attached or built in to a weights bar. This allows the user to visually monitor for themselves the extent to which they lifting in a level and balanced manner during the movement. This would be a useful tool in terms of alerting the user to any existing imbalances in their current technique and allowing them to monitor their own correction of this.
The invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows how the device could be incorporated in to a "long bar" and an "EZ bar" Figure 2 shows how the device could be clipped on to a "long bar" or an "EZ bar" In figure 1, the device is in-built to the bar. This allows the user to visualise the levelness of the bar as they lift during a variety of exercises by monitoring the position of the bubble inside the device (labelled A). In figure 2, the device is clipped on to a bar. This allows the user to visualise the levelness of the bar using the position of the bubble inside the device (labelled A) and, potentially, detach the device before reattaching it to another bar. This is achieved by a push-on mechanism whereby the plastic case (labelled B) has sufficient flexibility that when it is pushed on to the bar the space (labelled C) will increase to accommodate the bar. There are also holes (labelled D) in the plastic to allow users to tie the device in some way to a bar for a more permanent fixture.

  2. 2. A spirit device according to claim 1, in which the levelness of the bar is measured by a spirit level or similar device.
