Abstract
An article of footwear, e.g. sandal 100, comprising an upper sole 200 with a retaining strap 500 and a lower sole 300, with a convex downward protrusion 400 which acts as a curved rocker corresponding with the transverse mid arch area of the wearers foot. The downward protrusion 400, remains in contact with the ground whilst the wearer is in a seated position and acts as a fulcrum, allowing the foot to rock back and forth in a see-saw motion, exercising the calf and lower leg muscles and improving blood flow in the lower leg. The shape of the footwear is configured to try and mitigate against the formation of blood clots and deep vein thrombosis in the wearer.
Description
BLOOD CLOT RISK REDUCING FOOTWEAR
DESCRIPTION
Technical Field
The invention relates to blood cot prevention devices, and in particular a new type of portable footwear, for exercising a persons lower leg muscles, to inhibit the formation of blood clots, due to sitting for prolonged periods of time. The term given to such blood clots is deep vein thrombosis.
The invention can be easily be carried by the wearer, and worn while sat in a seated position.
BACKGROUND
There are many known cases of deep vein thrombosis, which can lead to heart attacks and strokes due to a person sitting in the same position for long periods of time, such as during long journeys, sat in an office environment, or chair bound whilst in hospital. In such instances, it is often suggested that a compression type of stocking is worn to reduce the risk of a blood clot forming.
Whilst sat in the seated position, the wearers foot is usually in the horizontal flat position.
By utilising the blood clot risk reducing footwear, the wearer can rock their feet backwards and forwards, across the curved rocker apex profile of the footwear while seated, which in turn exercises the lower leg muscles. The wearer of said footwear can exercise one or both legs at the same time, in turn increasing the blood flow around the wearers body.
The rocking motion of a wearers foot over the mid sole curved rocker apex profile, exercises the wearers lower leg muscles and improves the bodies cardio vascular system flow, during the same movements.
The lower part of the footwear which is in contact with the floor surface, is a mid sole curved rocker apex profile. The centre of the curved rocker apex is aligned with transverse arch area of the wearers foot. The upper sole area of the footwear, which is in contact with the wearers foot is of a flat profile.
Conventional rocker soles used in footwear which are used for walking in, can be used to assist with toning effects, but these are not suitable for all users such as the elderly due to balance problems.
A known problem of conventional types of walking rocker shoes, is that they may cause undesirable biomechanics compositions, which can cause problems for the wearer while walking in them. Rocker types of shoe soles are also of a much reduced rocker curved thickness, due to the need for the wearer to remain balanced while walking.
The new blood clot risk reducing footwear invention has a centrally mid sole positioned curved rocker apex profile, attached to the lower sole of the footwear in the area of the wearers transverse arch area, allowing the wearer to flex their lower leg muscles while sat in the seated position.
The blood clot risk reducing footwear includes an upper sole retaining strap, to retain the wearers foot in position in the footwear, and reduce any pressure on the wearers foot, which could occur if a normal shoe outer area support was incorporated in the design.
The blood clot risk reducing footwear, is also only used to exercise the lower leg while the wearer is sat in a seated position, which in turn removes any undue compression on the knees, which is found during normal walking movements.
The invention incorporates a retaining strap on the upper part of the footwear sole, which is adjustable and allows the footwear to be secured to the wearers foot.
The adjustable retaining strap allows for the wearer to position their toot in the footwear to their own preferred position, to locate a comfortable position for the foots transverse mid arch line area, over the mid sole curved rocker apex profile.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
A blood clot risk reducing footwear, which comprises of an upper sole, with an adjustable retaining strap, a lower sole, which includes a mid sole curved rocker apex profile, inline with the wearers transverse arch area of the foot, approximately 10 to 20 millimetres forward of the wearers cuboid bone, with a complete sole and rocker thickness of approximately 55 millimetres, from the top of the upper sole, to bottom of the mid sole curved rocker apex profile.
The curved rocker apex mid sole profile has a greater elevation than the forward and rear heal section of the lower sole, allowing the wearers toot to pivot upon it, while the lower part of the curved rocker apex profile remains in contact with the floor surface.
In preferred embodiments, the tootwear, can be made from an Eva construction. (Eva, ethylene-vinyl acetate), or rubber construction. The soles of the footwear are semi-rigid in construction.
The lower sole, has a mid sole curved rocker apex element attached, which can comprise of an Eva or rubber material, which allows the wearer to exercise in comfort whilst operating the blood clot risk reducing footwear The footwear mid sole curved rocker apex profile, allows a forward and backwards movement of the wearers foot, but not in a lateral motion, while the wearer is sat in a seated position.
The rocking motion of the foot, produces a flexing of the powerful gastrocnemius (calf) muscle, which encourages the bodies blood circulation to increase in the lower leg area, which is known to be an area of the lower leg which can produce blood clots, while sat for long periods of time in the same seated position.
