Abstract

A base plate for a scaffolding tube comprises a steel plate with an upstanding steel pin located at a position which is offset from the centre of the plate. In one embodiment the pin is located towards a corner of the plate. In another embodiment (see figure 8) the pin is located towards the middle of one edge of the plate. In use the scaffold tube fits over the pin, allowing the tube to be correctly supported close to a wall or other obstruction.

Description

CORNER/EGDE SCAFFOLD BASE PLATES
DESCRIPTION
I HAVE BEEN A SCAFFOLDER FOR OVER 15 YEARS NOW AND HAVE WORKED IN DIFFERENT AREAS OF SCAFFOLD ERECTION, THESE INCLUDE, NEW BUILD HOUSE CONSTRUCTION, EXISTING BUILDING REFURBISHMENT AND POWER
STATIONS AND NEVER SEEN ANYTHING THAT OVERCOMES THE PROBLEM
THAT MY INVENTION DOES. WHEN BUILDING A SCAFFOLD A BASE PLATE IS PLACED UNDER THE STANDARDS (THE UPRIGHT SCAFFOLD TUBES). THIS IS PUT IN PLACE TO SPREAD THE WEIGHT FROM THE SCAFFOLD. IF NOT IN PLACE THE
STANDARDS COULD SINK INTO WHATEVER SURFACE THE SCAFFOLD IS
ERECTED ON. ON SOFT GROUND A TIMBER SOLE BOARD IS ALSO USED UNDER THE BASE PLATE, AGAIN TO SUPPORT AND SPREAD THE WEIGHT. THE
SCAFFOLD TUBE SITS OVER THE TOP OF A PIN THAT IS FIXED ON THE BASE
PLATE, THIS IS TO STOP THE BASE PLATE MOVING FROM UNDERNEATH THE STANDARD. IF THE BASE PLATE IS KNOCKED FROM ITS PLACE UNDER THE SCAFFOLD IT LEAVES THE STANDARD SIlTING DIRECTLY ON THE SURFACE WITH NO MEANS OF WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION. THIS COULD LEAD TO A FAILURE IN THE SCAFFOLD STRUCTURE.
THE BASE PLATES THAT ARE USED AT THE MOMENT ARE COVERED IN EN74-3.
THEY SHOULD BE MADE OF STEEL AND AT LEAST 150mm X 150mm SQUARE AND HAVE A THICKNESS OF AT LEAST 5mm. THE PIN MUST BE 50mm IN LENGTH AND IS FIXED IN THE CENTRE OF THE PLATE, THE TWO SMALL HOLES IN EACH BASE PLATE ARE FOR FIXING IT TO THE SOLE BOARD IF NECESSARY.
(SEE FIG. 1) THIS IS ALL WELL AND GOOD IF THE POSITION OF THE STANDARDS
ALLOWS THE BASE PLATE TO BE PLACED CENTRALLY UNDER THE STANDARD
SO THE PIN FITS INTO THE UNDERSIDE OF THE TUBE. (SEE FIG. 2) IN SOME
SITUATIONS THE STANDARDS HAVE TO BE PLACED DIRECTLY AGAINST A FIXED
OBSTACLE, OR EVEN A CORNER, FOR EXAMPLE A WALL OR IN INDUSTRIAL SCAFFOLD SITUATIONS MACHINERY OR PLANT, WHICH CANNOT BE MOVED.
WHAT HAPPENS AT THE MOMENT IS THAT THE BASE PLATE IS PUSHED
AGAINST THE OBSTACLE AND THE STANDARD IS PLACED ON THE BASE PLATE
WHEREVER IT FITS, THIS MEANS THAT THE PIN THAT IS MEANT TO KEEP THE
BASE PLATE UNDER THE SCAFFOLD TUBE IS NOT ALWAYS IN THE UNDERSIDE
OF THE TUBE LEAVING IT VUNERABLE TO BE KICKED OR KNOCKED FROM ITS
SUPPORTING POSITION. (SEE FIG. 3 AND 4) MY INVENTION OVERCOMES THIS PROBLEM BY HAVING THE PIN FIXED, NOT IN THE CENTRE OF THE BASE PLATE BUT HAVING IT FIXED IN THE CORNER, (SEE FIG. 5,6 AND 7) THIS GETS OVER THE PROBLEM OF HAVING TO PLACE A STANDARD IN A CORNER, OR FIXED AT AN EDGE, (SEE FIG. 8, 9 AND 10) THIS
GETS OVER THE PROBLEM OF HAVING TO PLACE A STANDARD AGAINST A
WALL OR OBSTRUCTION ON ONE SIDE. IN THESE INSTANCES THE STANDARD
CAN BE SEATED ON THE BASE PLATE DIRECTLY OVER THE PIN WHICH IS
PLACED AS TO ALLOW THE STANDARD TO BE PLACED AGAINST ANY OBSTACLE
PREVENTING ACCIDENTAL AND DANGEROUS REMOVAL OF BASE PLATE.
