Abstract

Disclosed is a food-production-safe adhesive tape 10, for use in food packaging applications to package food items or containers thereof. The adhesive tape 10 comprises a carrier substrate 12 provided with an adhesive layer 14. An aromatic additive impregnated within the adhesive layer 14 alters the scent thereof, thus facilitating olfactory identification of the adhesive tape 10 by a user. Colour pigmentation, comprising a food-production-safe dye, may also be incorporated within the adhesive layer 14 in order to facilitate visual identification of the adhesive tape 10 by a user. The intensity of the scent and colour is adapted so as to be discernible to a user when the adhesive tape 10 is layered on a roll, yet weak enough that it is substantially non-detectable when applied as a single layer in food packaging applications. The food-production-safe adhesive tape 10 can be easily distinguishable from other adhesive tapes by its user.

Description

Food Production Safe Adhesive Tape The present invention relates to a food production safe adhesive tape, particularly, but not exclusively, a food production safe adhesive tape used in food packaging applications to package food items or containers thereof.
Adhesive tape is often used in packaging food items. As with all products used in such environments, adhesives tapes must be food production safe in order to avoid contaminating or otherwise adversely affecting food items. Furthermore, they must also be effective in a processing environment where there are a range of temperatures and humidity levels. A number of different food production safe adhesive tapes have been developed over the years; however, these vary dramatically in their safety, adhesion and strength qualities. Furthermore, due to the inherent colourless and transparent nature of such adhesive tapes, it can be very difficult to identify a specified adhesive tape from its physical attributes without expensive test equipment. As a result, poorer quality adhesive tape is only identified in use, at which point it is normally too late to be rectified.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a food production safe adhesive tape comprising a carrier substrate having an adhesive layer, and an aromatic additive adapted to alter the scent of the adhesive tape in order to facilitate olfactory identification of the tape by the user.
Further features and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the claims appended hereto, and from the following description.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of example only, with reference to the following diagrams, in which Fig. 1 is an illustration of a portion of food production safe adhesive tape of the present invention.
As shown in Fig. 1, a portion of adhesive tape 10 comprises a carrier substrate 12 onto which an adhesive layer 14 is applied.
In the present embodiment, the carrier substrate 12 comprises a strip of clear polypropylene carrier material; however, any suitable carrier material (such as for example a cellulose film) could instead be utilised.
The adhesive layer 14 comprises a pressure-sensitive water based acrylic adhesive. In the present embodiment the particular water based acrylic adhesive utilised is PRIMALTM PS 2001 LS manufactured by The Dow Chemical Company; however, the skilled reader will appreciate that different forms of adhesive such as emulsion acrylic adhesives (e.g. RHOPLEX N-i 031 Emulsion manufactured by The Dow Chemical Company, AQUENCE® PS Emulsion Acrylics manufactured by Henkel AG & Co. KGaA, or POWERTAC -60 manufactured by Power Chemical Industries Pvt Ltd.) could alternatively be utilised. In their normal form, such adhesives are inherently clear with substantially no colour pigmentation; however, in the present invention it is impregnated with a stable colour pigmentation dye such as Chromatint® Blue 0408 Liquid manufactured by Chromatech Incorporated.
The intensity of pigmentation provided by the pigmentation dye in the adhesive layer 14 is configured during manufacture to be sufficiently strong to allow a user to discern the colour thereof when several adhesive layers are arranged adjacent one another (e.g. when provided on a roll of tape) but is weak enough that it is substantially non-visible to the user when only a single thin layer is viewed. In the present embodiment of the invention this is achieved by providing the pigmentation dye in a concentration range of between 1 to 2%; however, the skilled reader will appreciate that different concentrations may be used and this can also be varied by varying the colour intensity and I or type of the dye and / or the thickness of the layer of adhesive used in any particular application.
The adhesive layer 14 is also impregnated with a food production safe aromatic additive in order to create a distinctive scent which allows a user to olfactorily identify the food production safe adhesive tape. In the present embodiment this comprises an aromatic additive comprising a mixture of natural oils and synthetic raw materials such as NARGUILE 6892 DEO/SUPER CONC/5A manufactured by Muller Grol3handels Ltd. & Co. KG; however, alternative aromatic additives may be utilised.
The intensity of the scent provided by the aromatic additive in the adhesive layer 14 is configured during manufacture to be sufficiently strong to allow an average user to detect when several layers of adhesive tape 10 are arranged adjacent one another (e.g. when provided on a substrate roll) but is weak enough that it is much less detectable by the average user in only a single layer of adhesive tape 10. In the present embodiment of the invention this is achieved by providing the aromatic additive in a concentration range of between 0.25 -0.5%; however, the skilled reader will appreciate that different concentrations may be used and this can also be varied by varying the aromatic additive used and / or the thickness of the adhesive layer 14.
The non-volatile nature of the aromatic additive means that it does not adversely affect the adhesive properties of the adhesive layer 14.
Through conditioning and/or instinct many users have a tendency to associate particular colours with particular scents and vice-versa. The choice of aromatic additive and colour additive may therefore be selected with this in mind.
In use, when the adhesive tape 10 is provided on a roll, several layers of the tape will be layered upon one another around the roll. This results in an accumulation of colours (from the relatively faint colour of each layer of tape 10) such that a relatively vivid resultant colour is observed by the user. As the adhesive tape 10 is gradually used up overtime, eventually only a few layers of the tape will remain; however, this is not a problem since the colour observed by the user can be enhanced by providing the roll with a similarly coloured core which can be seen through those last few layers of adhesive tape 10.
In addition, when the adhesive tape lOis provided on a roll, an accumulation of the scents from the faint aromatic scent of each layer of tape 10 is created such that a subtle yet distinctive scent is sensed by the user. However, when the user applies the adhesive tape 10 to e.g. a food packaging carton, the relatively faint nature of the colour and smell of a single layer of the adhesive tape 10 means that no colour or scent is easily discernible in the single layer of applied adhesive tape 10.
Furthermore, when a layer of adhesive tape 10 is peeled from its roll, the adhesive layer 14, and hence the impregnated aromatic additive, are temporarily exposed to the surrounding air. Such exposure temporarily increases the evaporation rate of the adhesive and impregnated aromatic additive thereby increasing the aroma detected by a user at this stage. Therefore, when a user peels a small section of tape away from the roll the aroma detected by the user is temporarily intensified.
However, once the roll is returned to the roll, or applied to packaging in use, the intensity of the aroma decreases.
The resulting distinctive appearance and scent of the adhesive tape 10 when accumulated together into a number of layers therefore allows a user distinguish the food production safe adhesive 10 from other types of tape easily, quickly and reliably. However, this does not adversely affect the suitability of the end product in any way.
Although particular embodiments of the invention have been disclosed herein in detail, this has been done by way of example and for the purposes of illustration only. The aforementioned embodiments are not intended to be limiting with respect to the scope of the appended claims.
It is contemplated by the inventors that various substitutions, alterations, and modifications may be made to the invention without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined by the claims. Examples of these include the following: -Although in the described embodiment, the colour additive is impregnated into the adhesive layer 14, it could alternatively be impregnated into the carrier substrate 12.
