Affixing labels. - A machine for affixing labels on cans or the like is formed with a rotatable clamp frame which takes the cans successively from a feed device and automatically releases them at a point of discharge, the labels being applied to the rotated cans during their passage through the machine in the frame. The labels are printed on a band and are cut off one by one as soon as a label has been wrapped round a can, and means are provided to ensure that the band is cut between the printed labels. The clamping frame for the cans comprises clamping plates 9, 10 carried on a shaft 16, and similar plates 13, 14 carried on a shaft 17. the shafts 16, 17 being rotatably mounted in discs 11 rigidly fixed to a shaft 12. A spur-wheel 20 on the shaft 12 meshes with wheels 18 on the shafts 16. 17 and the shaft 12 is driven by gearing 21, 22 from a pulley 23. The band 3 of printed label is fed to a can 8 from a roller 2 and passes over a roller 5 which takes up liquid adhesive from a tray 6. As the clamping frame rotates, the can draws the label round it the frame being stopped after half a revolution and the band severed by a knife slidable in vertical guides 26. The knife is moved upwards in the guides by a pin 29 on the wheel 21 which moves along a n arm 30 of a lever 27. the knife dropping when the pin 29 leaves the a,rm 30. A holder 33, which presses the ends of the band 3 on each side of the knife, moves down with the knife. To release a labelled can. a head 36 on each plate 9, 14 is gripped by a guides 37 as shown in Fig. 2, the shafts 16, 17 being moved axially by a cam 38 and by setting levers 40 against the action of a spring 34, the cans falling by their own weight. The. cans to be fed are normally retained on a shaft 41 by a stop 42, which is released, .when the can is to be fed to the clamps, by a pin 44 on the wheel 21 and a lever 45, one arm of the lever 45 being a toothed segment which engages a pinion rigid with the stop 42. To obviate cutting the label band 3 through the printed portions, a handoperated lever 47 is rigidly connected with, and aurns the wheels 20, wrapping more or less of the band round the can.
