Abstract
A detachable door restraint comprising a door saddle housing 1 for engaging over a door edge either at the top or bottom corner of a door, an adjustable restraining arm 7 is releasably connected to the saddle preferably by a threaded connection allowing the reach of the restraining arm to be adjusted accommodating various thickness of door frame architrave. The restraining arm 7 which abuts a door frame in use and prevents a door being opened may include a slot 8 for cooperation with a padlock through apertures 6, several apertures may be included allowing the arm to be in horizontal and vertical orientations.
Description
I
Door restraint Conventional door restraints require a proficient level of skill to fit them. More basic door restraints, such as sliding bolts, damage the door and the frame during fitting and though they remain permanently attached, are rather unsightly. Existing, non-invasive, mechanically free fixing door restraints do address those issues but have certain limitations. Not all doorways are constructed to the same depth. While some mechanically free fixing door restraints attempt to accommodate door assemblies of varying depths by providing a plurality of attachment/securement holes, there is no specific provision for taking up any slack, which may exist, allowing unwanted movement between the door face and the door stop when the door is secured within Its frame, leaving it vulnerable to tampering.
Furthermore, this type of restraint relies upon the restraint being able to effectively engage with the surrounding architrave or building fabric, horizontally adjacent to the lock side door jamb. In certain situations, a horizontal engagement is not always possible, particularly when a doorway is sited at the end of a very narrow hallway.
To overcome this, the present invention proposes a non-invasive, detachable door restraint comprising a door saddle housing that allows the restraint to be simply positioned on the top or bottom lock side corner of either a left or right hand hinged, internally opening door and which incorporates a means that allow the reach of the restraining arm to be lengthened or shortened accordingly, in order to accommodate door assemblies of varying depths and to allow any slack to be taken up, thereby preventing unwanted movement, that might otherwise exist, between the door face and the door stop when the door is secured within its frame. Means are also provided that allow the restraining arm to be secured along the required point of travel, in either a horizontal or vertical locking position, by means of a padlock or similar locking device.
This is a further modification to my invention that was disclosed in my earlier patent, GB2448954A.
An example of the invention will now be described by referring to the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 shows the unconnected component parts of a non-invasive detachable door restraint.
Figure 2 shows a non-invasive door detachable door restraint, according to the invention, with a restraining arm shackled in a horizontal locking position by means of a padlock.
Figure 3 shows a type of restraining arm that would be required when a doorway has little or no depth.
In figure 1, a non-invasive, detachable door restraint, comprising a door saddle housing 1, which provides a non-invasive means far attaching the restraint to either the top or bottom lock side corner of a left or right hand hinged, internally opening door. Situated on the front face of the saddle housing 1, an allowance for door stop clearance is provided 3, and there is also a reinforcing plate 2, upon which an apertured securing coupling 4, is sited. The apertured securing coupling 4, has an internal female threadS, that allows it to receive a male threaded restraining arm 7, which provides a means for lengthening or shortening the reach of the restraining arm accordingly, allowing any slack to be taken up so that there is no unwanted movement between the door face and the door stop when the door is secured within its frame. Also situated on the male threaded restraining arm 7, is an elongated, slotted aperture 8. which allows the hasp of a padlock to pass through it and in conjunction with the four apertures 6, that are located on the securing coupling 4, provides part of a shackling means which allow the restraining arm 7, to be locked in a either a horizontal or a vertical position, as required.
When the restraint is in position on the top lock side corner of either a left or right hand hinged, internally opening door, the restraining arm 7, is able to effectively engage the surrounding architrave or building fabric, horizontally adjacent to the lock side doorjamb or whenever that is not practicable, the surrounding architrave or building fabric, vertically above the door frame head, thereby preventing the door from being opened.
When the restraint is in position on the bottom lock side corner of either a left or right hand hinged, internally opening door, the restraining arm 7, is able to effectively engage the surrounding architrave or building fabric, horizontally adjacent to the lock side door jamb, thereby preventing the door from being opened.
The restraining arm 7, can be simply detached from the securing coupling 4, and replaced by other restraining arms with different reach capabilities.
Ideally, the restraint would be made of metal or durable synthetic materials or a combination of both.
Claims (4)
- Claims A non-invasive, detachable door restraint comprising a door saddle housing that allows the restraint to be simply positioned on the top or bottom lock side corner of either a left or right hand hinged, internally opening door and which incorporates a means that allow the reach of the restraining arm to be lengthened or shortened accordingly, in order to accommodate door assemblies of varying depths and to allow any slack to be taken up, thereby preventing unwanted movement, that might otherwise exist, between the door face and the door stop when the door is secured within its frame.
- 2 A non-invasive, detachable door restraint according to claim 1, whereby when the restraint is in position on the top lock side corner of a left or right hand hinged, internally opening door, the restraining arm is able to effectively engage the surrounding architrave or building fabric, horizontally adjacent to the lock side door jamb or whenever that is not practicable, the surrounding architrave or building fabric, vertically above the door frame head, thereby preventing the door from being opened.
- 3 A non-invasive, detachable door restraint according to claim 1, whereby when the restraint is in position on the bottom lock side corner of either a left or right hand hinged, internally opening door, the restraining arm is able to effectively engage the surrounding architrave or building fabric, horizontally adjacent to the lock side doorjamb, thereby preventing the door from being opened.
- 4 A non-invasive, detachable door restraint according to claim 1, in which the restraining arm can be simply detached from the securing coupling and replaced by other restraining arms with different capabilities.
