Abstract
252,196. British Tabulating Machine Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Tabulating Machine Co.). May 16, 1925, [Convention date]. Multiplying - apparatus. - A record-controlled statistical machine is provided with means for multiplying, including means for setting up both the multiple card and the multiplier and means whereby the multiplying operation, once initiated, proceeds automatically. The motor 1 drives the shaft 3 to which are clutched differentially the counter wheels 4 when the clutches 5 are operated from the counter magnets 6 in the known manner. The "9 " perforation index points pass under the brushes first, 7<a> are the usual card-lever contacts and the magnet circuit is 2-11-7<a>-7-12-6-13- 14-2. There are provided contacts 16, 17 closed by the multiplier units rack 18<a> only when the latter stands at zero and contacts 10<a> used at multiplying instead of contacts 10 for the motor 1. At multiplying the brushes 7 are cut out and the circuit is 2-11-1-20-17-21-2 for the motor and 11-24-16-25-26-23-27- 28-29-12-6-13-14-2 for the multitiplying operation. The contacts 23 are closed differentially in a manner corresponding to the action of brushes 7 by means of cams 22 which are rotated once per machine cycle by shaft 3 and which are adjustable thereon by devices which are only brought into co-operation with the cams to set up the multiplicand at the beginning. 28 is an automatically operated denominationselecting bail. The multiplier is set up on racks 18, Figs. 7 and 8 by means of sectors 58 gearing with wheels 19 which are loose upon a shaft 3 and which also gear with the racks at 51. Fig. 7 shows a rack in zero position. Parts 55, carried on bell-cranks 59 and moved one tooth per cycle by a pin 61 on a disc 60 rigid with shaft 3, are normally withheld from the racks by a member 63 on the bail 28 which latter is drawn to the left, Fig. 8 prior to setting up the multiplier. When the racks are set, the bail 28 is arrested by the side face of extensions 66 of the racks. 18<a>, 18b, 18<c> are the units, tens and hundreds racks respectively. In Fig. 8, multiplication is proceeding from left to right of the multiplier the rack 18<c> being in zero positon and the bail 28 being held by the extension 66 of the tens rack 18b. Once per machine cycle, therefore, the set rack of highest denomination, say hundreds, is moved one tooth by its pin 61 and the multiplicand is added to the appropriate counter wheels. When the hundreds rack reaches zero the bail 28 slips one denomination to the right, Fig. 8, the member 63 lets fall the pawl 55 of the rack, i.e. tens, holding the bail and the magnets to which the contacts 23 are connected are stepped each one denomination lower. This proceeds until the units rack reaches zero, opening contacts 16, 17 and stopping the machine. If desired, the numbers appearing upon the counter may be set up as a multiplicand on the cams 22 by means which are coupled automatically to the cams when the counter is zeroized. In a modification applied to pin-box machines, Figs. 9 and 10, the multiplicand is set up by plates 68. Figs. 9 and 10, one for each card column which are adjusted by sectors 71 so that the single hole 69 of each column co-acts with the appropriate one of the sensing pins. During ordinary use of the machine these plates are completely retracted from the path of the cards.
