Abstract

A jockey wheel retaining device comprises a wheel 1 located between opposing flat fork plates 2 which are connected to an end of a vertical tube 3a. A jockey wheel retaining device 4 comprises a hook 4a provided at a bottom end of a vertical arm 4b which is connected to a horizontal plate 4c that has an aperture through which the vertical tube extends. In a stored position one of the fork plates 2 rests upon hook 4a so as to prevent the jockey wheel 1 dropping should a clamping screw not be properly engaged. To disengage the jockey wheel 1 from the hook 4a the tube 3a is raised and rotated away from the hook 4a and the jockey wheel dropped to the ground. Reference is also made to a trailer or caravan provided with the jockey wheel retaining device.

Description

JOCKEY WHEEL RETAINING DEVICE
The present invention relates to ajockey wheel retaining device.
Jockey wheels are used at the front of almost all trailers as a method of raising arid lowering the front of the trailer in order to connect arid disconnect the trailer from the towing vehicle.
Currently when a jockey wheel is stowed the operator uses a clamp handle to secure the jockey wheel in position when ready for transit of the trailer.
The design of the clamp handles rely on two main features: -i) the thread is maintained lubricated; and ii) the operator applies sufficient clamping force to secure the assembly.
If either of the above are not carried out correctly then the jockey wheel can fall downwards and strike the road whilst the trailer is in transit. This can be particularly problematic on very rough terrain where lots of vibration occurs.
Should the jockey wheel fall down then it may strike a "sleeping policeman" speed control device or rough ground and this can lead to not only damage to the jockey wheel but also damage to the trailer chassis and might even result in dangerous consequences.
The present invention has been made from a consideration of this problem.
According to the present invention there is provided a jockey wheel retaining device comprising a hook on which at least one of the jockey wheel or a support for the jockey wheel may be temporarily located.
The invention deals with the problems associated with prior art designs in that it provides a secondary support oriented in such a way that the jockey wheel cannot fall.
The system of the invention provides storage for a wide range of jockey wheels and a variety of coupling control devices.
The jockey wheel retaining device may comprise a hook provided at the bottom end of a vertical arm.
The jockey wheel retaining device may comprise a horizontal plate. The vertical arm comprising the hook may be connected to the horizontal plate at an end opposite to the hook.
The horizontal plate may comprise an aperture. The aperture may be adapted for receiving a vertical tube.
The support may comprise two flat fork plates. The support may connect to a lower end of a vertical tube extending through an aperture of a trailer frame.
The jockey wheel retaining device may be integrally connected to the vertical tube extending through the trailer frame aperture.
The jockey wheel retaining device may be adapted so as not to obstruct the operation of a clamping screw connected to a damping handle.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a trailer or caravan provided with the jockey wheel retaining device according to the first aspect of the invention.
h order that the present invention may be more readily understood a specific embodiment thereof will not be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: -Fig. I is a perspective view of a jockey wheel attached to a trailer with the wheel in a lowered position; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a jockey wheel attached to a trailer with the wheel in a raised and stored position; Fig. 3 is a magnified view of part of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a magnified view of part of Fig. L Referring to the drawings a conventional trailer assembly has a jockey wheel (1) located towards the front thereof The jockey wheel may rotate about an axle extending between opposing flat fork plates (2). The flat plates also connect with the lower end of a vertical tube (3 a). The tube passes through an aperture in the trailer framework. The more of the tube which is located below the trailer frame, the higher the front of the trailer rises. Once in the required position the tube is clamped within the aperture in the trailer frame by way of a clamping screw connected to a clamping handle.
A jockey wheel retaining device (4) comprises a hook (4a) provided at the bottom end of a vertical arm (4b) which in turn is connected to a horizontal plate (4c). An aperture is provided in the horizontal plate (4c) through which the vertical tube extends (3b). The jockey wheel retaining device does not interfere with the operation of the clamping screw.
In the stored position one of the fork plates (2) rests upon the hook (4a) so as to prevent the jockey wheel (1) dropping should the clamping screw not be properly engaged.
To disengage the jockey wheel (1) from the hook (4a) the tube (3b) is raised and rotated away from the hook (4a) and the jockey wheel dropped to the ground.
The above described embodiment is by way of example only. Many modifications and variations are possible. For example, the storage location may be fixed, sliding, pivoting or spring loaded in order to achieve the same result. It may also be an integral part of the casting rather than a separately fixed component. In addition, it can be made from any suitable material.
