Abstract

251,921. Braibant, N. June 23, 1925, [Convention date]. Mariners' compasses. - Means for diminishing the effects of inertia and damping the vibrations of a navigational compass comprises a paddle rigidly attached thereto on its vertical axis and completely immersed in a liquid which is prevented from moving. In the form shown the paddle comprises two planes 3, 3<1> at right-angles to each other, connected by a rod 2 to the compass 1 mounted in the container 6. The lower part of the container is formed into a liquid reservoir by a closure 5 having an inwardly inclined upper part 7 terminating in a part 8 corresponding in shape to the compass so that the liquid is held between this part and the compass by capillarity. The lower surface 10 is sloped at such an angle that it is always outwardly inclined. The quantity of liquid is sufficient to cover the closure 5 and partly immerse the compass. The paddle may be of cylindrical, conical or spherical form.
