Description

Rear Seat Airbag Device for a Vehicle, in particular a Passenger Vehicle The invention relates to a rear seat airbag device for an interior of a vehicle, in particular a passenger vehicle, according to the preamble of patent claim 1.
A rear seat airbag device for an interior of a vehicle, in particular a passenger vehicle, can be found in US 2002/0036398 Al. The rear seat airbag device comprises a seat assembly configured to be arranged in front of at least one rear seat in the interior, the seat assembly having a seat part and a backrest. For example, an occupant of the seat assembly can sit on the seat part and lean against the backrest.
The rear seat airbag device further comprises an airbag assembly configured to be deployed from a stowage position into at least one deployed position in which the airbag assembly covers at least a lower portion of the backrest so as to cushion tibiae of an occupant of the rear seat in case of an accident.
This means during an accident an occupant of the rear seat is moved forward due to accelerations acting upon the occupant of the rear seat. As a consequence of this forward movement the tibiae of the occupant of the rear seat can come upon or in contact with the airbag assembly, wherein energy exerted on the airbag assembly by the tibiae is absorbed thereby cushioning the tibiae.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a rear seat airbag device of the previously mentioned kind, by means of which rear seat airbag device at least one occupant of a rear seat can be restrained in a particularly advantageous manner.
This object is solved by a rear seat airbag device having the features of patent claim 1.
Advantageous embodiments with expedient developments of the invention are indicated in the other patent claims.
In order to provide a rear seat airbag device of the kind indicated in the preamble of patent claim 1, by means of which rear seat airbag device at least one occupant of a rear seat can be restrained in a particularly advantageous manner during an accident according to the present invention the airbag assembly in the deployed position covers at least a second portion of a bottom side of the seat part and/or the backrest so as to cushion feet of the occupant in case of an accident, the second portion abutting the lower portion of the backrest. This means the airbag assembly covers not only the lower portion of the backrest but also at least the second portion of the bottom side, the second portion abutting the lower portion.
Thereby, not only tibiae but also feet of the occupant of the rear seat can come into contact with the airbag assembly so that the airbag assembly can absorb energy exerted on the airbag assembly by the tibiae as well as the feet of the occupant. Hence, the occupant, in particular their lower body can be restrained particularly advantageously by means of the rear seat airbag device according to the present invention so that, for example, submarining of the occupant can be avoided. The term submarining refers to a movement of the occupant of the rear seat, said movement being caused by an accident, in particular a frontal impact. In said movement, i.e. in the process of submarining the occupant dives deeply into a seat cushion of the rear seat so that the occupant might slip through the seat cushion and a seat belt which is assigned to the rear seat although the seat belt might be fastened. The airbag assembly of the rear seat airbag device according to the present invention can restrain the lower body of the occupant of the rear seat particularly advantageously thereby keeping the risk of submarining particularly low. It has been shown that the airbag assembly of the rear seat airbag device according to the present invention is particularly useful in crash pulses with early and high initial decelerations acting upon the occupant of the rear seat. Moreover, the risk of bruises of the feet and tibiae during an accident can be kept particularly low. Moreover, the lower body of the occupant of the rear seat can be restrained by means of the airbag assembly particularly early after the beginning of the accident so that the risk of injuries of the occupant can be kept particularly low.
Further advantages, features and details of the invention derive from the following description of preferred embodiments as well as from the drawing. The features and feature combinations previously mentioned in the description as well as the features and feature combinations mentioned in the following description of the figures and/or shown in the figures alone can be employed not only in the respective indicated combination but also in any other combination or taken alone without leaving the scope of the invention.
The drawing shows in: Fig. 1 part of a schematic side view of an interior of a passenger vehicle, the passenger vehicle comprising a first embodiment of a rear seat airbag device arranged in the interior in front of a rear seat, wherein the rear seat airbag device comprises an airbag assembly which covers at least a portion of a bottom side of a seat part and/or a backrest in a deployed position; and Fig. 2 part of a schematic side view of the interior in which a second embodiment of the rear seat airbag device is arranged.
In the figures the same elements or elements having the same functions are indicated by the same reference signs.
Fig. 1 shows part of an interior 10 of a vehicle in the form of a passenger vehicle. The passenger vehicle comprises a first scat 12 and a second seat 14 which are arranged in the interior 10. As can be seen from Fig. 1, the seat 12 and 14 are attached to a floor 16 of the passenger vehicle. For example, the seat 12 is arranged in a first seat row, wherein the seat 14 is arranged in a second seat row arranged behind the first seat row with respect to the longitudinal direction of the vehicle. Alternatively, the seat 14 is arranged in a third or higher seat row so that the seat 12 is arranged, for example, in a second seat row. Generally, the seat 14 is arranged behind the seat 12 with respect to the longitudinal direction of the vehicle so that the seat 14 is a rear seat arranged in the interior 10.
The seat 12 comprises a seat part 18 and a backrest 20 abutting the seat part 18, wherein, for example, the backrest 20 is pivotable in relation to the seat part 18.
Moreover, the seat 12 comprises a headrest 22 which is attached to the backrest 20. The seat 14 comprises a seat part 24 and a backrest 26 abutting the rear seat part 24. For example, the backrest 26 is pivotable in relation to the seat part 24. An occupant of the rear seat (seat 14) can sit on the seat part 24 and lean against the backrest 26. The seat 14 further comprises a head rest 27 mounted on the backrest 26.
The seat 12 is a seat assembly which is part of a rear seat airbag device 28 of the passenger vehicle, the rear seat airbag device 28 being arranged in the interior 10 in front of the rear seat (seat 14) with respect to the longitudinal direction of the vehicle. The rear seat airbag device 28 comprises an airbag assembly 30 configured to be deployed from a stowage position into at least one deployed position shown in Fig. 1. In the deployed position the airbag assembly 30 covers a lower portion 32 of a backside 34 of the backrest 20 so that the airbag assembly 30 is arranged between the backrest 20, in particular the backside 34, and the seat 14 with respect to the longitudinal direction of the vehicle at least partially. As can be seen from Fig 1, the lower portion 32 of the backside 34 comprises at least the lower third of the backside 34. For example, said portion 32 can comprise at least the lower half of the backside 34.
In order to restrain the occupant of the seat 14 in case of an accident particularly advantageously by means of the rear seat airbag device 28 the airbag assembly 30, in the deployed position, covers at least a second portion 36 of a bottom side 38 of the seat part 18 so as to cushion feet of the occupant of the seat 14 in case of an accident, the second portion 36 abutting the lower portion 32. Thereby, the tibiae as well as the feet of the occupant of the seat 14 can be cushioned and restrained by means of the airbag assembly 30 during an accident since the tibiae and the feet can be supported by the airbag assembly 30 during an accident such as, for example, a frontal impact. Thereby, the tibiae and the feet can be supported by the airbag assembly 30 thereby supporting and, thus, restraining the lower body of the occupant.
Fig. 1 shows a first embodiment of the rear seat airbag device 26, in which first embodiment the airbag assembly 30 comprises two separate airbags 40 and 42. As can be seen from Fig. 1, the first airbag 40 is mounted on the backrest 20, and the second airbag 42 is mounted on the seat part 16. In the deployed position the first airbag 40 covers the lower portion 32 of the backside 34, and the second airbag 42 covers the second portion 36 of the bottom side 38. Thus, the tibiae can be cushioned and restrained by means of the first airbag 40, and the feet can be supported and restrained by means of the second airbag 42. Since the tibiae and the feet and, thus, the lower body of the occupant of the seat 14 can be restrained particularly advantageously by the rear seat airbag device 28 the risk of submarining of the occupant of the seat 14 can be kept particularly low.
For example, in order to deploy the airbag assembly 30 the rear seat airbag device 28 comprises at least one first gas generator assigned to the first airbag 40, and at least one second gas generator assigned to the second airbag 42. The first airbag 40 can be inflated and, thus, deployed by means of the first gas generator. Thus, the airbags 40 and 42 can be deployed separately from each other by means of the respective gas generators. Alternatively, the rear seat airbag device 28 can comprise at least one gas generator by means of which both the first airbag 40 and the second airbag 42 can be inflated.
As can be seen from Fig. 1, the first airbag 40 is arranged in a first deployment zone Dl, wherein the second airbag 42 is arranged in a second deployment zone D2. In each of the deployment zones Dl, D2 one or multiple airbags can be arranged. A respective point of deployment of the airbags 40 and 42 can vary within the respective deployment zones Dl and D2.
For example, the airbag assembly 30 is deployed from the stowage position into the deployed position on the basis of at least one signal indicative of a crash. For example, said signal is provided by at least one sensor which is configured as a crash sensor. For example, the sensor is configured to detect at least one parameter indicative of a crash, in particular a frontal impact of the passenger vehicle. Said signal characterizes the parameter and is transmitted to an electronic control unit which receives the signal. On the basis of the received signal the electronic control unit determines whether or not a crash of the vehicle happens or a risk of such a crash exceeds a predetermined threshold value. Thereby, the airbag assembly 30 can be activated by means of the electronic control unit on the basis of the received signal so that, for example, the airbag assembly can be deployed when a crash happens or before a crash actually happens. In order to deploy the airbags 40 and 42 the respective gas generators are triggered simultaneously or individually so that the airbags 40 and 42 are inflated simultaneously or individually, i.e. separately from each other.
Fig. 2 shows a second embodiment of the rear seat airbag device 28. In the second embodiment the rear seat airbag device 28 comprises an airbag 44 which covers both the lower portion 32 and the second portion 36 in the deployed position. As can be seen from Fig. 2, the airbag 44 extends from the lower portion 32 over a corner region 46 to the second portion 36 or vice versa. Thus, the tibiae and the feet of the occupant of the seat 14 can be cushioned, supported and, thus, restrained by means of the airbag 44. The rear seat airbag device 28 according to the second embodiment can comprise at least one gas generator by means of which the airbag 44 can be inflated and, thus, deployed.
During restraining the tibiae and the feet of the occupant of the seat 14 the airbag assembly 30, i.e. the airbags 40 and 42 or the airbag 44 respectively can deflate by at least one respective vent. This process of deflating can be adjusted through the design of the respective vents. Thus, the occupant, in particular their lower body can be restrained in a need-based and particularly advantageous manner.
