Abstract

Fitness equipment comprises a number of exercise input modules e.g. resistance means, a computer for modulating the input from said exercise input modules and a screen for displaying the output data generated by said input modules and modulated by said computer. The computer determines the required exertion to be applied to said exercise input modules by a user hoping to achieve an objective set by the user. The computer automatically modifies the resistance of said exercise input modules by amounts dependent on said output data. User exertion may be measured by heart rate and may be overridden. The preferred embodiment is of an exercise bike but may include rowing machines or equipment comprising resistant bands or weights. A video link may be provided via a camera for use in online virtual spinning classes or communication with an instructor.

Description

i Field of the h,vention
The invention relates to fitness equipment.
ention Conventional fitness equipment exists with a potential application of varying degrees of Resistance, via a dial or switch or programmable within generic guidelines, so not personallsed.
However, such equipment does not offer an automatically measureable Fitness workout as typcalLy a control (dial/switch) has to be moved up or down on the equipment, by a usen to vary its resistance. And its incremental movements may he relatively coarse and generic or allow the user to work within their metabolic rate, this is worked out specifically for them within a personallsed consultation and assessment, with a programmer or trained so staff. Such equipment is known for indMdual or group sessions hut has the drawbacks just outlined. nvnin
in its broadest aspect the invention provides fitness equipment comprising a number of exercise input modules; a computer for modulating the input from said exercise input modules; and a display means for displaying the output data generated by said input modules and modulated by said computer; whereby said computer determines the required exertion to be applied to said exercise input modules by a user hoping to achieve an objective set by the user; said computer automatically modifying the resistance of said exercise input modules by amounts dependent on said output data.
A web camera (live feed or a recorded session) may be used to allow remote training.
The term number" includes one.
This provides fitness equipment that requfres no dials or swftches to increase or decrease the level of exertion required by a user of that equipment. The required exertion is determined by the computer and the resistance of the exercise input modules modified accordingly.
ft can be managed by the heart rate of the assessed indMdual within predetermined client objectives, however the instructor/cUents can manually override it and there can he a Uve leed board to show the individual or group readings.
n one embodiment the equipment may comprise resistant bands. In this embodiment, the fitness equipment also incorporates a video Link module for analysing the performance of a user of the resistance bands. The video (ink module subsequently communicates with the computer for the computer in turn to modify the resistance of the bands.
This provides an accurate means for measuring and analysing the performance of a user of the resistance bands, and modifying the resistance of the resistance bands dependent on that analysis.
In a further embodiment the equipment comprises exercise weights. n this embodiment, the fitness equipment also incorporates a video [ink module for analysing the performance of a user of the exercise weights. The video link moduLe subsequently communicates with the computer for the computer in turn to modify the resistance of the exercise weights.
This provides an accurate means for measuring and analysing the performance of a user of the exercise weights, and modifying the resistance of the exercise weights dependent on that analysis.
n a further embodiment the equipment comprises a neck press apparatus. In this embodiment, the fitness equipment also incorporates a video link module for analysing the performance of a user of the neck press apparatus. The video link module subsequently communicates with the computer for the computer in turn to modify the resistance of the neck press apparatus.
This provides an accurate means for measuring and analysing the performance of a user of the neck press apparatus, and modifying the resistance of the apparatus dependent on that to analysis.
h a further embodiment the equipment comprises a chest. press apparatus. n this embodiment, the fitness equipment also incorporates a video link module for analysing the performance of a user of the chest press apparatus. The video Unk module subsequently communicates with the computer for the computer in turn to modify the resistance of the chest press apparatus.
This provides an accurate means for measuring and analysing the performance of a user of the chest press apparatus, and modifying the resistance of the apparatus dependent on that analysis. Incorporated within this can be a sear movement break (like an emergency stop mechanism).
n a further embodiment the equipment comprises a rowing machine. In this embodiment, the fitness equipment measures the exertion of the user through the acceleration of the flywheel of the rowing machine as it is engaged by the user.
Alternatively, the fitness equipment can measure the linear exertion on the cord of the rowing machine when it is pulled hack by the user, This provides an accurate means for measuring and anaLysing the performance of a user of a rowing machHe, and modiing the resistance of the rowing machine dependent on that analysis.
This can be used with the same assessment criteria and computer program and display.
In a presently preferred embodiment the equipment comprises a spin bike. The equipment can then offer a personalised fitness approach to a class fitness session in which the or to each bike will be set up by the individual and placed in the studio as normal; but the user(s) can first have a quick assessment to determine their fitness Level and during this discussion they can opt for a variety of levels of litness per session.
The rates will differ depending on outcome goals. Resistance will change depending on m whether the client is after stroke volume training mitochondria buiLding and stamina, High intensity interval training (HUT) metabolic training, speed and cadence development and the production of human growth hormone.
The users for example may do a test cycle where they wilt pedal on the bike and the bike will offer gradual resistance to ascertain the minimum and maximum levels that the user in this embodiment the user may be assessed on what they wish to achieve within the sessions and what energy system they are hoping to use, dependent upon their aim i.e. weight loss, improved stroke volume, fitness, race improvement or the Uke.
A bike in such an embodiment will have a computerised system that will load the dient4s preprogrammed workout regime into the bike for a given session. The software driving the computer may offer a number oF options or features. The resistance will automatically change to an individual's target without any need to move any switch, but it wilt be shown on the display screen, It will go up and down in resistance automatically in line with the preselected programme. lach programme may be on different levels depending on the different individual goals of differing individual users. One could have a "layered" fitness system as in sessions for basic, intermediate and advanced fitness, or a blended one,
S
The equipment could be Unked to a printer or email address as welt as the live feed so that a sessbn is recorded to allow the client feedback and gains etc. Additionally or alternatively the system could be programmed to send tips on nutrition etc. for the required outcome goat.
Another embodiment would be for the computer to "rea& tempo and automatically change the feedback to match the changes in and so control the resistance required for the to client's goal.
An instructor could have the option via a controlling master to increase or decrease everyone's or an individuaL's resistance in a group by a number of levels from a main screen. This will also show the instructor which of his group is meeting theft individual target and who is over or under their respective target. This could also he displayed on a Large screen.
Another option is that of onLine virtual spinning classes, where members can join a class from their own houses and do a session with either a virtual instructor or an online instructor and have a view on their screen of a previous class or the one actually taking place.
Many of these embodiments store all information so means can edst to download it, access it, look at the improvements and future advances and transport it between places.
2 One option would be for the instructor to be able to put in a music track and the computer to convert this into the right tempo or allow a bank of musk to be used (online).
