Description

ID
Device is fjgjoftj, jnvention The invention relates to a paint roller wrapping device and in particular to a paint roller wrapping device for thermally bonding a fabric about a paint roller core tube.
acro&ndtot.hejnvni.
Conventional paint rollers are constructed from a strip of fabric, heLically wound around and adhered to a long rigid core tube, which is typicaLly greater than 13 meters in length.
Cutting the paint rollers core tube to length, and other required finishing operations are subsequently performed at a later stage within the manufacturing process as separate operations.
A fabric is conventionally adhered to the rigid core tube via the application of a twopart epoxy adhesive to the backing of the fabric / cover materiaL The disadvantages of using so this type of adhesive is that it is hard to work with and is also an extra cost during the manufacturing process of the paint roller, Furthermore, two part epoxy adhesives are becoming an unpopular choice because of their environmental impacts and the perceived advantages of Polypropylene tubes (which do not bond readily with traditional adhesives).
It is an objective of the claimed invention to overcome these disadvantages.
thjnvi 6 In a first broad independent aspect, the invention provides a pnt roller wrapping device comprising a rotatable holding means for a paint roller core tube nd a first heating block arranged on said device to provide a first surface that is directly contactable with the surface of a rotating paint roller core tube, which in use, is held by said holding means and heats the surface of a paint roller core to a molten state that is suitable for adhering a it' wrapped fabric.
This configuration is advantageous because it melts the surface of paint roller tube via direct heat conduction from a heat source; therefore providing a more accurate and controllable heat flow, with minimal unproductive heat loss and the ability to shape/texture the molten surface for improved adhesionlspeed and efficiency The molten surface of the paint rolLer facilitates the attachment of a fabric via thermofusion, Preferably, said first surface of said first heating block further comprises part cylindrical recess which is adapted to conform and cooperate with the surface circumference of a paint roller core tube, This configuration is advantageous because it enables the contact heat to be uniformly applied over a surface area of the paint roller core tube.
Preferably, said first heating block is formed from copper.
This enables a good conduction of heat from the heating means within the heating block, to the surface of the heating block that is in direct contact with the surface of the paint roller tube core.
Preferably, said first heating block further comprises an electrical heating means.
This provides a heating means which s safer and more accurately controuable than the burning a fuel with a naked flame.
Preferably, said first heating block comprises a gas heating means, This provides a heating means which is cheap and simpe to use where a naked flame is s permissible.
Preferably, a paint roller wrapping device further comprising a heating block withdrawal means for removing the direct contact of said first heating block to the surface of a paint roller tube core.
This configuration provides a means gaining access to a paint roller tube core that has been loaded onto the pnt roller wrapping device without having to first dismantle the heating block or any associated mounting mean. This is particularly desirable if quick access if a failure occurs with the paint rotter tube core, the heating block itself or both.
Preferably, a paint roller wrapping device further comprising a second heating block arranged on said device to provide a second surface that is directly contactable with the surface of a rotating paint roller Lube core, which in use, is held by said holding means and heats the surface of a paint roller core to a molten state that is suitable for adhering a wrapped fabric.
This configuration provides a more uniform heating about the circumference of a loaded paint roller tube core.
PreferabLy, said first surface of said first heating block is arranged opposite said second surface of said second heating block.
This configuration provides a unifbrm support to maintain contact with the heating block, whereby the first and second heating blocks support the paint roller tube against the necessary tension required for wrapping the fabric. This configuration does not require a separate supDort between the first or second heating block and the application of the fabric, which would be problematic due to the molten surface of the paint roller core tube.
Furthermore, pressure of each opposed heating block, being in direct contact wfth the surface of the loaded paint roller tube, will cancel each other out.
In a second broad independent aspect, the invention provides a paint roller wrapping system comprising: A rotatable hoiding means for a paint roller tube and A heating block arranged to provide a surface that is directly contactable with the surface of a rotating paint roller core, which in use, is held by said holding means and heats the surface of a paint roller core to a molten state that is suitable for adhering a wrapped fabric.
This configuration provides a paint rolling wrapping system that incorporates any of the above features.
n a third broad independent aspect, the invention provides a heating bbck device comprising a surface that is directly contactable with a surface of a rotating paint roller core held by a rotatable attachment means of a paint roller wrapping device, This configuration provides a heating block that incorporates any of the above features and is separate from the paint roller wrapping device.
Preferably, a method of retrofitting said heating block device in accordance with the above features, to a paint roller wrapping device.
This provides a method of fitting a heating block device to any existing paint roller wrapping devices Fgure 1 shows a close up perspective view of a paint roller core tube loaded and rotating on a paint roller wrapping device.
onoftheFurs Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a heating bLock 1 arranged in position, on a paint roller core tube 2 that is loaded into the paint roller wrapping device (not shown), An array of four electrical cartridge heaters 3 are arranged within cooperating apertures 4 of the end face S of the heating block 1, Each cartridge heater 3 further incorporates two attached electrical Leads 6.
A helical arrow 7 indicates a clockwise rotating movement of the paint roller core tube 2 located within the heating bLock 1 and ratably supported by the paint roller wrapping device (not shown).
The rectangular heating block 1 is arranged so that it is in direct contact with the surface of the paint roller core tube 2 and whereby rectangular faces 8 and 9 interface with identical cooperating faces of a second heating block 10 to provide a seamless heat transfer about the paint roller core tube 2. The circular arrangement of the four heater cartridges 3 about the paint roller core tube also contribute to the efficient heating of the heat conductive material.
An optional second heating block 10 is aLso in direct contact with outer surface of the paint roller core tube 2 and incorporates an elongated concave surface 11 that is sized to enable it to be located about the paint roller core tube 2 in a position that is oppose to eLongated recess surface 12 of the heating Mock 1. The inner surface 11 of the second heating bLock 10 is in direct contact with the paint core roller core tube 2.
A fabric materiaL 20 is applied and wrapped about the paint roller core tube 2. The fabric is typically a pile backed fibrous materiaL, In use, paint roller core tubes are continuously Loaded in an end to end abutting configuration and fed through a p&nt roller wrapping device; whereby the paint roller core tubes are held by a rotating support device. A heating block, which incorporates and employs an array of electrical cartridge heaters as a heating means, is arranged in direct contact with the outer surface of the loaded core tube. The core tube is typically formed from a polypropylene plastics mater and is rotated as it is passed through the paint roller wrapping device, The forward motion of the core tube is a forward moving helical motion whereby its outer surface is directly heated by the heating block. As the tube is rotated through the heating block, the heating block heats the outer surface about the tube circumference until it is a molten state. The temperature of the outer surface of the core tube can be controlled and regulated by a temperature controller, and/or by contra Wng the speed of rotation of the core tube and therefore the time duration in which a portion of w the core tubes outer surface is in direct contact with the heating block.
Subsequent to the heating process a portion of fabric Le. typically in a fomi of an elongated strip is subsequently applied to the rnoften surface of the tube after its heating.
The fabric is adhered to the tube, via the. molten surface of the tube, by the employment is of a thermofusion process. The thermofusion bonding of the. fabrics to the tube is maintained throughout the continuous application of the paint roller tube cores to the paint roller wrapping device. Therefore in a non-limiting example of the operation of this process the surface of the tube becomes a Uquid which flows into the fibres of the fabric being attached to the tube and upon setting, the molten surface is thereby bonded to the tube.
A continuous supply of paint roller core tube are loaded into the paint roller wrapping device, whereby each paint roller core tube is arranged end to end with a neighbouring paint roller core tube. This continuous end to end configuration of Loading paint roller core tubes into the paint roller device, does not require the known method of loading individual paint roller core tubes onto, and the subsequent removal from a supporting mandrel, Therefore the continuous operation is both faster and more efficient than any of the known paint roller wrapping solutions.
n an alternative embodiment of the invention a second heating block is arranged on the paint roller wrapping device, wherein its contact surface with a Loaded paint roller core tube is opposed the contact surface of an existing first heating block, The second heating block heats opposed portions of the outer surface of the paint roller tube, therefore providing a more uniform distribution of the heat which heats the material quicker and therefore expedites the wrapping process. Further addftna[ heating blocks may be required due to the thickness of the paint roller core tubes walls and/or the plastics/ material from which it is constructed. Also, the heating blocks may be heated by other heating means such as a gas or other naked flame means where manufacturing/production conditions allow it.
In another alternative embodiment of the invention, the molten surface of the paint roller core tube adheres a ptastics foam materiaL such as polyurethane, which is either wrapped ia or sleeved about the paint roller core tube.
h an alternative embodiment of the invention, the invention provides a method of retro fitting heating block device to an existing paint roller wrapping device/apparatus.
