Abstract

The electrical lead is a lead suitable for connecting a musical instrument, for example a guitar, to a piece of electrical equipment such as an amplifier. The electrical lead 8 is generally unsprung. However it includes at least one end portion 9 that allows extension or contraction. The end portion 9 may be coiled in a spring-like fashion or the extension or contraction may be provided by a sprung lanyard (10, fig 4). The lead overcomes the problems associated with sprung and unsprung leads.

Description

A Lead The present invention relates to an electrical lead and more particularly to an electrical lead having two ends. The lead is suitable for connecting a musical instrument to a piece of electrical equipment, such as an amplifier.
There are many leads available which connect two items together to transmit power or information between the two items. In the case of a lead for attaching a musical instrument to a piece of electrical equipment, such as an amplifier, a lead has two ends with each end having a jack plug attached or attachable thereto or which can be connected to the musical equipment and electrical equipment. In the case of a lead being used to attach an electrical musical instrument to a piece of equipment a number of problems can arise. In particular, the lead can be of considerable length and may be walked on or stood on by the person playing the electrical musical instrument or those performing nearby. If the lead is stood on or the lead reaches its extended limit due to the musical instrument being moved away from the piece of electrical equipment to which it is connected by the lead, then the lead can be tugged out of the instrument and/or the piece of electrical equipment. Alternatively, if the connection between the jack plug and the piece of equipment and/or the musical instrument is strong then the musical instrument may be prevented from being moved any further. This is particularly a problem for a guitar player performing on a stage when he/she moves around a lot.
In order to overcome this problem, some musicians wrap the lead around a strap supporting the musical instrument on the musician's body which prevents it from being pulled out of the musical instrument but this solution does not prevent the interruption by tug or restriction of movement.
Another type of known lead is a coiled lead which is designed to contract so as to avoid the lead touching the floor which removes the likelihood of the lead being stood upon. The coiled lead reduces the risk of the jack plug being pulled out of the instrument or piece of equipment and lessens the issue of tug.
However, as the lead hangs in midair it creates a barrier across the performance area and therefore restricts a musician from moving around the stage as is customary. Also, the increased effective diameter of the coiled lead makes it a tripping hazard on the occasion when it does touch the ground. These leads are also heavier per unextended meter and are difficult to store as they cannot be coiled easily.
To overcome the problems of the prior art, the present invention provides a lead for connecting a musical instrument to a piece of equipment having two ends, wherein the lead is mainly unsprung and having a portion of the lead proximate to at least one end of the lead which allows extension and contraction of the lead. The unsprung portion of the lead will rest on the floor which will allow musicians to move around. As the majority of the lead is unsprung it will reduce the likelihood of the lead getting tangled and will ensure that any portion of the lead designed to allow extension and contraction is kept to a minimum.
The small length of lead that allows for extension of the lead when a force is applied effectively reduces the risk of the jack plug being removed from the piece of equipment or musical instrument. It also allows for contraction of the lead.
The portion of the lead that allows extension and contraction of the lead may be in the form of a coiled portion of lead. The length of lead making up the coiled portion is preferably shorter than the length of unsprung lead.
Alternatively, the portion of lead that allows extension and contraction of the lead may be realised by a lanyard which is attached to two points along the length of the lead. The sprung lanyard may simply be a piece of elastic material. The lanyard may be attached along any point of the lead but ideally proximate to an end of the lead.
The portion of lead that allows extension and contraction of the lead may be placed proximate to the piece of electrical equipment or the musical instrument. In another embodiment, the portion of lead that allows extension and contraction of the lead may be present proximate to both ends of the lead.
In a preferred embodiment, the portion of lead that allows extension and contraction of the lead proximate to the end of the lead but not adjacent to an end. This would mean that there were a straight section of lead which could be looped around the strap supporting the musical instrument on the musician's body. In a preferred embodiment, the portion of lead that allows extension and contraction of the lead is located at a distance in the range of 5-50cm from the end of the lead. In a further preferred embodiment, it is located between 10 and 45cm from the end of the lead and more preferably at 30cm from the end of the lead.
The invention may be performed in various ways and embodiments thereof will now be described by way of example only, reference being made to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a musician playing a guitar with a lead, according to the prior art, connecting a guitar to a piece of electrical equipment.
Figure 2 shows a musician playing a guitar with a coiled, spring-like lead according to the prior art, connecting the guitar to a piece of electrical equipment.
Figure 3 shows a musician playing a guitar with a lead according to the present invention wherein the portion of lead, that allows extension and contraction of the lead, is a coiled, spring-like lead.
Figure 4 shows a musician playing a guitar according to another aspect of the present invention wherein the portion of the lead that allows extension and contraction of the lead is provided by a sprung lanyard connected to two points on the lead.
Figure 1 shows a lead 1 according to the prior art. The disadvantage of this lead 1 is that it can accidentally be pulled out of the two items it is connecting together 2 and 3 if either of items 2 or 3 should move further from each other than the length of the lead or if the lead is stood on 4.
Figure 2 shows a spring-like lead 7 which cannot be stepped on. This coiled lead has plugs 5 and 6 for connecting the lead to a musical instrument 2 and a piece of electric equipment 3.
Figure 3 shows an embodiment of the present invention wherein the lead includes a portion of unsprung lead 8 and having a portion 9 that allows extension and contraction of the lead and which reduces tug. A spring-like section 9 is shown which will extend and contract as forces are applied and removed from the lead.
Figure 4 shows an unsprung lead 8 having a portion 10 that allows extension and contraction of the lead and which reduces tug 10. The extension and contraction is controlled by a lanyard 10 which is attached to two points on the lead 8.
Variations, modifications, additions and omissions relating to the described invention above are possible within the ambit of the invention and will be readily apparent to the skilled addressee. For example, a portion of lead which will allow for extension and contraction can be used proximate to each end of the lead. The portion that allows extension and contraction may be a spring-like portion proximate to both ends of the lead, a sprung lanyard proximate to both ends of the lead or a combination of the two. Also, the lead according to the present invention can be used to connect musical instruments such as violins, violas and keytars, to electrical equipment.
