Abstract

An optical cable in which a winding portion for variable extra length is contained compactly so that it can be protected against external force or birds, and laying work, adjustment of extra length, transportation, and the like, are facilitated. The optical cables (11, 11') have main body portions (12, 12') where the core of optical fiber is covered with a sheath. A part of the cable is formed of a winding portion (17) consisting of a plurality of turns having a diameter not shorter than the allowable bending diameter of the optical fiber and the winding portion is covered with a tubular cover body (19). A spiral groove for holding the winding turns of the winding portion (17) may be formed on the inner surface of the tubular cover body (19).
