Abstract

A hand held physical training apparatus, includes a robust spherical type shell 1, housing a ball transfer unit 2, in which the ball protrudes from the flat base of the shell providing an unbalanced surface which can rotate freely to allow the whole unit to move 360° in any direction. The shell may be provided with a removable rubber non-slip coating. A clip 4 may be provided for removably fixing the ball transfer unit in the shell. The apparatus may be used for core and shoulder stability training exercises.

Description

A hand held core and shoulder stability training apparatus An example of the invention will now be described by referring to the accompanying drawings: * Figure 1 shows the top view according to the invention; and * Figure 2 shows the side view according to the invention; and * Figure 3 shows view from below according to the invention; and * Figure 4 shows the side view with internal representation of ball transfer unit according to the invention; and * Figure 5 shows the basic design of the current industry standard for a similar functioning product, of which the invention aims to improve upon.
This invention relates to a device allowing users to perform bodyweight exercises in a 360 degree range of motion at the glenohumeral joint.
The Health and Fitness Industry currently has several products used to strengthen the body by means of bodyweight exercises.
However, conventional devices similar in function to the proposed invention work in one plane of motion; namely forward and backwards. This serves the intended function of strengthening the core' musculature of the body such as the Transverse Abdominis, Internal and External Oblique's, Rectus Femoris and Erector Spinae muscle groups. These devices also serve to strengthen the shoulder joint in the Sagittal Plane through flexion and extension under tension.
The shoulder joint however is a ball and socket joint, and in addition to flexion and extension can also perform many more movements including but not limited to; Abduction and Adduction and Horizontal Flexion and Horizontal Extension. The proposed invention is also able to target these planes of motion in addition to the planes already targeted by similar devices.
The device incorporates a ball transfer unit within a primarily spherical shell body, as opposed to a wheel as in comparable devises. This allows for smooth motion in 360 degrees and targets a more comprehensive range of movements within the shoulder joint.
The invention is sized and shaped to be held in the hand. This allows for the users arms to move independently also increasing the number of movement patterns that can be performed. Importantly this increases the number of motions that can be performed to target the Rotator Cuff muscle groups for rehabilitation purposes.
The outer shell of the device may be covered in a non-slip rubber coating, and the ball transfer unit may have an accompanying fixing clip to allow the unit to be removed from the outer shell.
The invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings listed in the beginning of the d e sc r i Pt ion.
In figure 1 and figure 2, a ball transfer unit 2 is housed inside a robust outer shell 1 that may be covered with a non-slip rubber coating. Both the ball transfer unit 2 and outer shell 1 have a downward load bearing capacity of a minimum 80kg.
Figure 3 shows the view from below with the outer shell 1 forming a flat base with the centre ball of the ball transfer unit 2 protruding from the base.
Figure 4 shows the side view with an internal depiction 3 of how a ball transfer unit 2 may be housed inside the shell 1. A fixing clip 4 may be attached to the flat base of the shell to allow the ball transfer unit to be removed from the outer shell.
Figure 5 shows the industry standard similar functioning product. The mostly linear range of motion available from the device is illustrated using arrows 5.
The invention being proposed is held in a single hand using the top portion of outer shell 1. This may or may not be combined with another of the same device used in the opposite hand to work both sides of the body synergistically. As ball 2 is protruding from the base of the outer shell 1 it provides an unbalanced base, which can be righted by using the hand and wrist to manipulate the position of the outer shell 1. Once righted and the base of the outer shell 1 is no longer in contact with the appropriate surface on which the unit is placed, a practitioner's skeletal musculature can be used provide the energy needed to freely manoeuvre the whole device. Thus by housing and resting on the ball transfer unit 3; the devise is free to travel in any direction along the appropriate surface it is placed.
Dependant on the motion being performed and the weight transfer placed on the device, different levels of difficulty and different target muscle activation can be achieved.
