Description
SAFETY SHIELD FOR A PIPE JOINT
Field of the Invention
[0001] The present invention relates to a safety shield for a pipe joint carrying a pressurized fluid or gas.
Background of the Invention
[0002] Over the years, various types of devices have been proposed, such as systems consisting of more shroud members releasably joined to form an enclosed chamber [0003] US 5,489,124 discloses a safety shield for capturing corrosive fluids escaping from joints or valves in piping systems, consisting of first and second shroud members releasably joined together to form an enclosed chamber in assembled position about the joint or valve.
[0004] US 5,470,110 discloses a shielding device having an elongate body wrapped around a pipe flange positioned in the gap area between the flanges.
[0005] The present invention overcomes these problems by providing a safety shield which is easy to be made, relatively inexpensive and includes at least one indication means.
Summary of the Invention
[0006] Problems of the prior art safety shields include that their construction is highly specialized and technically complex and that they are not able to indicate the existence of a leaking pipe joint. Another disadvantage of the prior art safety shield is that they are not able to give remote indication of leaks to plant control rooms or to other relevant places. Another disadvantage of the prior art safety shields is that they are relatively expensive.
[0007] According to the first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a shield for a pipe joint carrying a pressurized fluid or gas, comprising a closeable or sealable pliable body of a length and a width to be wrapped around the pipe joint, whereby the width is larger in the middle of the pliable body than at its ends, at least one sealing or closing means and at least one indicating means [0008] According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a shield for a pipe joint carrying a pressurized fluid or gas, comprising a closeable or sealable pliable body of a length and a width to be wrapped around the pipe joint, whereby the width is larger in the middle of the pliable body than at its ends, at least one sealing or closing means and at least one indicating means and whereby the pipe joint is a flange, a valve or a coupling.
[0009] According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a shield for a pipe joint carrying a pressurized fluid or gas, comprising a closeable or sealable pliable body of a length and a width to be wrapped around the pipe joint, whereby the width is larger in the middle of the pliable body than at its ends, at least one sealing or closing means and at least one indicating means, whereby the indicating means comprises a sight glass, a concave disc and an indicator ball. The concave disc may have a single hole in the centre. The indicator ball may be colored to make it easily visible.
[0010] According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a shield for a pipe joint carrying a pressurized fluid or gas, comprising a closeable or sealable pliable body of a length and a width to be wrapped around the pipe joint, whereby the width is larger in the middle of the pliable body than at its ends, at least one sealing or closing means and at least one indicating means and whereby the pliable body is made of a flexible material, such as silicone coated fiberglass, PTFE coated fiberglass or nylon.
[0011] According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a system comprising a shield for a pipe joint carrying a pressurized fluid or gas, comprising a closeable or sealable pliable body of a length and a width to be wrapped around the pipe joint, whereby the width is larger in the middle of the pliable body than at its ends, at least one closing or sealing means and at least one indicating means and an electronic switching system, and whereby the shield for carrying a pipe joint is linked to the electronic switching system.
[0012] Embodiments described herein may have an advantage that in case of failing pipe joints causing a leak, a spray-out of often toxic, corrosive and dangerous liquids and gases is prevented. Such spray-outs can have catastrophic effects, in many cases resulting in fire or explosions causing considerable plant down time, capital expenditure and even loss of life.
[0013] Embodiments described herein may have another advantage that in case of failing pipe joints causing a leak, a spray-out of often toxic, corrosive and dangerous liquids and gases is prevented and the liquid or the gas enter the sight glass through the concave disc, which causes the indicator ball to rise within the concave disc and thereby disappearing from view when viewed in the horizontal plane (i.e. the indicator ball can be seen if there is no leak). In other words: indicator ball disappearing from view is an indication of a leak.
[0014] Another advantage is that the shield for a pipe joints of the present invention can be linked to an electronic switching system to give remote indication of leaks to plant control rooms or to other relevant places.
[0015] Another advantage is that the shield for a pipe joint of the present invention can be easily, tightly and in a liquid and gas proof way fixed to the pipe joint by means of a liquid and gas proof sealing means, whereby the shield fixed to the pipe joint can be linked to an electronic switching system to give remote indication of leaks to plant control rooms or to other relevant places.
[0016] Another advantage is that the shield for a pipe joint of the present invention is easy to be made and is relatively inexpensive.
[0017] Other aspects are as set out in the claims herein.
