Abstract

The present invention relates to the use of microwave energy to enhance the activity of enzymatic reactions, such as enhancing the activity of enzymes involved in the degradation of cellulose to glucose and intermediates thereto. The invention further relates to the use of microwave energy to enhance the production of compounds by microbes, specifically where microbial growth is fuelled by an energy source, such as a biomass whose degradation is enhanced by microwave energy. The invention further relates to a microwave reactor vessel suitable for conducting such enhancement of enzyme activity and such fuelling of microbial growth.
