Abstract

All group 2 (15-25 Kg about 3-7 years of age) car seats sold use the adult seat belt strap to secure it and the occupant in place, the seat belt crosses from the shoulder to the opposite hip then across the lap to the other hip then to the anchor point. A safety strap is provided. The safety strap is attached to the existing adult seat belt strap at the anchor point and then crosses from one hip to the opposite shoulder so now the child has two straps crossing each other across the chest. The safetyl strap then passes around the back of the seat and is attached to the existing adult car seat strap using a specially designed slide through end plate. The fixed length safety strap stops the occupant from falling forward in the seat.

Description

Description
Group 2 car seats use the integral adult 3 point inertial reel seat belt to hold the car seat and the occupant in position. The adult seat belt follows the route; up from the anchor point at the base of the car seat to the hip on the same side then across the lap to the opposite hip. The belt is anchored here to the car buckle and the strap then crosses from the hip nearest to the buckle to the opposite shoulder. It then passes from here to the cars integral inertia reel system. This integral system has been tested extensively and is used universally all over the world for this type of seat.
The cars belt restraint system works on the basis that it will lock if the belt is extended rapidly) when the vehicle comes to a stop suddenly or in an accident. The belt though can be extended slowly and fully without it locking, lithe occupant in a group 2 seat slowly falls forward with their own weight they could potentially end up with their head on the lap with their shoulders out of the restraint.
This could have a huge impact on the safety of the occupant if the car has to break suddenly or is involved in an accident with the occupant in this position.
We have devised a belt that can be added to the existing restraint mechanism that will make the child safer and more comfortable. It is added easily and non-permanently to the anchor point of the cars adult 3 point belt. The route for our belt; is up from the same anchor point at the base of the seat to the hip on the same side and then straight up to the opposite shoulder. The belt then routes through the spare unused eyelet at shoulder level (There are eyelets at this level either side of the seat so that it can be used in either the right or left hand seat of a car Diagrami) around the back of the car seat and attached to the cars integral adult 3 point strap Diagram 2 using the specially designed end plate. It always takes the opposite route across the chest to the cars adult belt strap.
This ensures that the occupant now has two straps crossing the chest in an X' pattern Diagram 3.
Our strap once adjusted to the correct length is fixed and will not allow the occupant to fall forward even if the cars own belt is not locked. If the occupant falls asleep or becomes relaxed they will be held against the cars seat as intended Diagram 4. The additional belt when added will not have any effect on the functioning of the integral car belt.
The attachment of our additional strap to the anchor point of the integral belt at the base of the seat is via our specific locking clip, this can be adjusted up and down but will not move once in place Diagram 5. The other end of the strap is attached behind the seat to the integral adult belt via a sliding clip of our own design (Diagram 2). This allows the integral seat belt mechanism to work properly and can it can be pulled out and retracted at will.
Our strap is opened and closed via a traditional buckle/tongue mechanism (Diagram 5), the release of the tongue is by pressing the red press' button. Once the strap is closed the length and tightness can be adjusted with the slider mechanism (Diagram 4). The occupant can be released very easily from the additional belt with one press of the button.

Claims (15)

  1. Claims Group 2 child car seats rely on the adult car seat inertia reel seat belt straps to hold the seat and the occupant in place. Inertia reel seat belts work on the basis that the seat belts are stowed on spring-loaded reels called retractors equipped with inertia locking mechanisms that stop the belt from extending off the reel during severe deceleration. The belt can be pulled from the reel slowly and gradually just as when the occupant extends the belt to fasten it. A sudden rapid pull of the belt -as in a sudden braking or collision event -causes the reel to lock, restraining the occupant in position. If the occupant slowly falls forward when sleeping or leaning forward the belt will not lock and as such the adult strap will allow the occupant to fall forward so that the head may fall forward towards their lap. This is potentially dangerous as the occupant now has their head in a position not intended for the use of the seat. If the car had to stop suddenly forcing the head forward in an uncontrolled way most of the loading of the adult strap will be on their shoulder and neck rather than the chest. This is potentially dangerous with sever implications on the health of the occupant. It has been reported that occupants allowed to stay in this position for longer periods of time find ituncomfortable. Our additional strap stops the occupant from creeping forward in their seat holding them in a controlled position against the back of the seat for both better comfort and safety. This will have no impact on the operation of the existing belted mechanism and can be fitted to most group 2 seats easily and reversibly. It has been tested up to the required international standards (ECE R44) and was found to improve the safety of the existing seat and restraint mechanism. This type of addition belted structure has not been used in this way before.Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows Claims 1. A safety strap or belt for a Group 2 child car seat comprising a first attachment at a first end thereof, and a second attachment at a second end thereof, wherein the first attachment is configured for attachment to an integral belt at the anchor point and the second attachment is configured for attachment to the integral seat belt behind the child car seat.
