Abstract

A vacuum cleaner comprises a tubular body 1 of rigid material with a suction motor 6 at one end and the other end being closed-off by a tubular collar 10 of translucent rigid material and which collar 10 has a semi-permeable bag 2 attached to its inner edge and wherein a clamp 12 presses one edge of the collar 10 against the open edge of the tubular body 1 and presses a cap 3 on its other edge, the cap 3 also serves to close-off the whole assembly but for a hole 11 through which dirt and debris can be sucked and which assembly is such that the sub-assembly of translucent collar 10 and semi-permeable bag 2 may be disassembled by releasing the clamp 12 so as to free the cap 3. The translucent collar 10 allows the contents of the bag 2 to be seen so that a user can observe when its full.

Description

TITLE: Vacuum Cleaner INVENTOR: Glyn Hughes
BACKGROUND:
Domestic vacuum cleaners commonly deposit collected debris either in a bag or a bin. The bag type is preferred for technical reasons but has the disadvantage that the operator cannot readily ascertain how frill the bag is and whether cmptying is necessary. To partly ovcrcome this difficulty vacuum cleaners commonly incorporate a pressurc indicating devicc which can indicate that the bag is full, but these devices are unreliable. The present invention discloses a construction of vacuum cleaner incorporating a type of collecting bag which allows the operator to continuously monitor its contents, to ascertain when the bag needs emptying and to watch for items collected.

DISCLOSURE:
The invention is a portable vacuum cleaner An embodiment of thc invcntion is hcrc disclosed in figures 1 and 2 and 3, where figure 1 is a schematic cross-section and figure 2 represents a perspective view of one possible practical construction shown assembled as if ready for use, and figure 3 shows a perspective view of one possible construction shown as if disassembled by the user for emptying the collecting bag.
The invention consists of an assembly of three pieces. Piece (1) is the body', piece (2) is the bag' and piece (3) is the cap'.
The body', piece (1), consists of a container (4) of rigid material, which is open (5) at one end, and the end opposite to the open end contains an electric motor and suction fan (6) and a discharge vent (7).
The bag' (2) consists of a tube of a semi-permeable material which is closed off at one end (8) and open (9) at the other. The semi-permeable material may be, for instance, a woven textile.
Attached along the edge of the open end of the permeable bag is a collar (10) of a rigid and translucent material extending away from the edges of the open end of the permeable part of the bag by at least 15mm, such that it holds the unclosed end of the bag open, like a mouth.
The shape of the collar is such that it can seat against the open edge (5) of the body (1).
The cap' (3) is a rigid construction which is of a size suitable to cover-over and seal against the open end of the collar (10) at the end of the bag. The cap has a hole through it (11) which hole can be connected to a suction hose. The cap is provided with a clamp (12) which can removably connect it to the body (1) such that the collar (10) of the bag (2) is held between the cap and the body.
The whole invention consists of the collar (10) of the bag (2) held in place between the the body (1) and the cap (3) by a clamp (12) such that the semi-permeable part of the bag is wholly inside the container (4) of the body (1).
The operation of the invention is the running of the motor and fan (6) which creates negative pressure inside the container (4) of the body (1), and so through the semi-permeable material inside the body, so that a suction effect is applied to the hole (11) in the cap (3) causing material near there to be sucked into the bag (2) and retained there, which process is visible through the translucent collar (11). When observation of the collected contents of the bag, visible through the collar (11), shows that it is in need of emptying, the clamp (12) is released, allowing the cap (3) to be moved away and the whole bag (2) removed for emptying.

Claims (2)

  1. CLAIMS: The invention in which an exclusive property and privilege is claimed is defined as follows: 1. A vacuum cleaner consisting of a tubular body container of rigid material with a suction motor at one end and the other end being open and optionally closed-off by a tubular collar of translucent rigid material at least 15mm wide which collar has a semi-permeable container attached to its inner edge and which collar is pressed by the action of a clamp on its one edge against the open edge of the tubular body and on its other edge by a cap which also serves to close-off the whole assembly but for a hole through which dirt and debris can be sucked and which assembly is such that the sub-assembly of translucent collar and semi-permeable bag may be disassembled by releasing the clamp so as to free the cap.
  2. 2. A vacuum cleaner as described here with reference to the diagrams.
