Description
PAPER CONTAINER
This invention relates to a paper container, more particularly to a paper container with a three-dimensional surface profile.
Paper containers are more environmental friendly compared to Styrofoam tableware. Therefore, paper containers are widely used in the catering industry, fast food industry, and food processing industry. In order to attract attention and boost desire for purchase, patterns or texts are usually printed onto an outer surface of the paper containers. However, the patterns are merely two-dimensional printed patterns. Thus, the industry has focused on the development of paper containers with three-dimensional patterns.
conventional paper containers have inner surfaces usually covered with waterproof laminated layers composed of low density polyethylene (LDPE) . However, the laminated layers tend to irregularly swell upon heating (foaming) which adversely affects waterproof ability.
Therefore, an object of this invention is to provide a paper container with a three-dimensional surface pattern.
According to an aspect of this invention, there is provided a paper container including a bottom wall and a surrounding wall that extends from a periphery of the bottom wall and that cooperates with the bottom wall to define a containing space, the surrounding wall including: a paper layer having an inner surface and an outer surface; a first laminated layer that is covered on the outer surface of the paper layer, that is made of a foam material, and that includes a first foaming part and a second first foaming part, the second foaming part having a foaming degree greater than that of the first foaming part; a first ink layer that is covered on the first foaming part of the first laminated layer and that is made of a material capable of inhibiting swelling of the foam material of the first laminated layer; and a second ink layer that is covered on the second foaming part of the first laminated layer and that is made of a material capable of expanding with swelling of the foam material of the first laminated layer.
Other features and advantages of the present invention will become apparent in the following detailed description of the preferred embodiment with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the first preferred embodiment of a paper container according to this invention; Figure 2 is a fragmentary cross-sectional view of the first preferred embodiment of this invention; Figure 3 is a fragmentary cross-sectional view of the first preferred embodiment of this invention; and Figure 4 is a fragmentary cross-sectional view of the second preferred embodiment of a paper container according to this invention.
Figures 1, 2, and 3 illustrate the first preferred embodiment of a paper container 3 of this invention. The paper container 3 can be shaped as a barrel, a bowl, a plate, or can have other shapes for holding food. In this embodiment, the paper container 3 is in a barrel shape.
The paper container 3 has a bottom wall 31 and a surrounding wall 32 that extends from a periphery of the bottom wall 31 and that cooperates with the bottom wall 31 to define a containing space 30. The bottom wall 31 and the surrounding wall fl both include a paper layer 33 with an inner surface and an outer surface and a second laminated layer 35. The surrounding wall 32 further includes a first laminated layer 34, a first ink layer 36 and a second ink layer 37.
The bottom wall 31 has a flat bottom portion 311 and a circumferential flange portion 312 extending downwardly from the periphery of the bottom wall 31 opposite to the containing space 30. The surrounding wall 32 has a body portion 321 and a folded-back portion 322 that is folded back from a bottom end of the body portion 321 and that extends upwardly toward the flat bottom portion 311 so that the flat bottom portion 311 of the bottom wall 31 abuts against an end of the folded-back portion 322. The flange portion 312 is disposed between the body portion 321 and the folded-back portion 322 and an end thereof abuts against the surrounding wall 32. During manufacture, the second laminated layer 35 of the surrounding wall 32 at the folded-back portion 322 is heated to adhere to the flange portion 312 of the bottom wall 31.
The outer surface of the paper layer 33 is formed with a pattern 331. The pattern 331 can be ornamental figures, characters, barcodes, etc. The first laminated layer 34 is transparent and is covered on the outer surface and the pattern 331 of the paper layer 33. The first laminated layer 34 is made of a foam material such as low-melting-point thermoplastic resin. In the preferred embodiment of this inventLon, the first laminated layer 34 is composed of low density polyethylene (LDPE) The second laminated layer 35 is also transparent and is covered on the inner surface of the paper layer 33 which protects the paper layer 33 from being soaked with food or drink. The second laminated layer 35 is made of, for example, a high-melting-point thermoplastic resin. In the preferred embodiment of this invention, the second laminated layer 35 is composed of a mixture of high density polyethylene (HDPE) and LDPE. HDPE has a melting point of 135°C. LOPE has a melting point of 103°C. In this embodiment of LOPE/HOPE mixture, LOPE is present in an amount ranging from 40% to 70% and HDPE is present in an amount ranging from 30% to 60%. By using the mixture of LDPE and HDPE, the difference in the melting point between the first laminated layer 34 and the second laminated layer 35 can be lowered.
The first laminated layer 34 includes a first foaming part 341 and a second foaming part 342. The first ink layer 36 is covered on the first foaming part 341 of the first laminated layer 34 and is made of a material capable of inhibiting swelling of the foam material of the first laminated layer 34. The second ink layer 37 is covered on the second foaming part 342 of the first laminated layer 34 and is made of a material capable of expanding with swelling of the foam material of the first laminated layer 34. Due to the properties of the first and second ink layers 36 and 37, the second foaming part 342 has a foaming degree greater than that of the first foaming part 341.
In the embodiment of this invention, a material for the first ink layer 36 is a water-based ink and is commercially available from Great World Ink & Paint Co. Ltd. (Model name: FP-G-1O2FS) . A material for the second ink layer 37 is composed of a water-based ink, and is commercially available from Great World Ink & Paint Co. Ltd. (Model name: PF-G-llCIN) . The materials of the first and second ink layers 36 and 37 should not be limited by the preferred embodiment of this invention.
When heated during manufacture of the paper container 3, water contained in the paper layer 33 flows to the first laminated layer 34 due to the low density of the first laminated layer 34, thereby resulting in swelling of the first laminated layer 34. Moreover, because of the properties of the first ink layer 36 and the second ink layer 37, the first laminated layer 34 will have different foaming degrees at different portions, i.e., the foaming degree at the portion covered by the first ink layer 36 is less than that at the portion covered by the second ink layer 37. A three-dimensional surface profile is thus formed on the surrounding wall 32 of the paper container 3, thereby providing aesthetic feeling and superior heat isolation and heat preservation.
In the preferred embodiment of this invention, the first ink layer 36 formed on the first foaming part 341 is at a position corresponding to the pattern 331 of the paper layer 33. The second ink layer 37 is covered on the first laminated layer 34 exposed from the first ink layer 36, i.e., the second foaming part 342. Thus, the first laminated layer 34 corresponding in position to the pattern 331 has less foaming degree. In practice, the locations of the first and second ink layers 36 and 37 are not limited to those stated above and can be varied as desired.
Furthermore, the second laminated layer 35 composed of a LDPE/HDPE mixture has a laminating temperature of 160°C which is significantly lower than the laminating temperature (220°C) of conventional HDPE paper containers.
The manufacturing process is thus more energy saving.
Figure 4 illustrates the second preferred embodiment of this invention. The second preferred embodiment is similar to the first preferred embodiment except that the second ink layer 37 is not only formed on the second foaming part 342 but also covers the first ink layer 36.
In summary, by covering the first and second ink layers 36 and 37 on the outer surface of the first laminated layer 34, the first laminated layer 34 of the paper container 3 can have different foaming degrees at different portions, thereby obtaining a three-dimensional surface profile.
Furthermore, the laminating temperature of the second laminated layer 35 composed of a mixture of HOPE and LOPE is lower than those of conventional HOPE laminated layers.
Therefore, the manufacturing process of the paper container 3 according to this invention is more energy saving.
