Abstract
A solid state optical component, preferably made from optical grade glass or plastic allows cameras to film at an angle perpendicular to the direction of the lens. Typically this will be built into protective cases for mobile phones, so that the phones can be positioned with the camera lens facing down - on top of a helmet, for example - but the lens will capture image from the direction that the user looks. The component is preferably a prism. Similar devices may be used for tablets or MP3 players.
Description
SOLID STATE IMAGE MODIFIER
Description:
The Solid State Image Modifier (SSIM) is an optical device intended for use with cameras found on mobile phones and iPods / MP3 players.
Our invention is the result of wanting to capture head mounted video footage from mobile phone cameras.
We wanted to create a product that would allow a mobile phone to be positioned flat on top of a user's head, with the lens pointing down towards the user's head, thus keeping the product as low profile as possible.
The SSIM has an entrance and an exit surface. Light is reflected through two opposing 90 degree angles between these two surfaces, allowing a landscape image to be captured on a camera's sensor when positioned over the exit surface of the SSIM. The image is also corrected, so that it does not appear back to front.
The SSIM uses optical material (glass or plastic) to manipulate the light between the entrance and exit surface with minimal distortion Key Features: * Allows landscape images to be captured when the camera lens is pointing towards the ground, away from the intended view.
* Reflects the light twice, so that the captured image does not appear back to front.
Drawings: The illustrations below show a version of the SSIM, tailored to work with the camera found on the iPhone-4.
The surface faces are listed in the Diagram Key, below the illustrations.
FIGURE 1 shows the dimensions required to function with the iPhone's sensor.
The dimensions of the SSIM will alter depending on the camera it is required to work with.
FIGURE 2 lists each surface of the SSIM.
Light enters the SSIM through surface B5, and exits through surface A5.
Surfaces Al and Bi reflect the light.
Surface Bi has a clear, non-mirrored section, to ayoid stray light reflecting back into the lens.
The other surfaces are roughened to absorb, rather than reflect the light.
