Description

I
BLANK FOR A CARTON OR INSERT
Background to the Invention
[0001] This invention relates to a blank for forming an insert for inserting into a packaging carton and a blank for a packaging carton.
[0002] Tn a carton for containing a plurality of bottles it is known to provide partitions, for example cut out and hinged on either side from a central dividing panel, that define compartments for the respective bottles. It is also known to provide such partitions as a separate insert instead of integral part of the blank for the carton.
[0003] These known partitions effectively separate and cushion the bodies of the bottles. However the narrow necks of the bottles are not themselves held and there is still a potential for breakage.
Summary of the Invention
[0004] A first aspect of the invention provides a blank of stiff but foldable board for forming a substantially parallepiped packaging carton for packaging an array of bottles, the blank including at least one divider panel arranged to extend substantially vertically on erection of the carton and including partitions cut out therefrom and hingeable to divide the erected carton into compartments; and at least one neck panel providing a plurality of openings for bottle necks, the neck holding panel being arranged to extend substantially horizontally on erection of the carton, with the openings located above respective centres of the compartments.
[0005] A second aspect of the invention provides a blank of stiff but foldable board for forming an insert for a packaging carton for packaging an array of bottles, the blank including at Teast one divider panel arranged to extend substantially verticalTy on erection of the insert into the carton and including partitions cut out therefrom and hingeabTe to divide the carton into compartments; and at least one neck panel providing a plurality of openings for bottle necks, the neck holding panel being arranged to extend substantially horizontally on erection of the insert, with the openings located above respective centres of the compartments.
[0006] Tn embodiments of the first and second aspects of the invention respechvely, two divider panels are provided, arranged to extend parallel to each other in the erected carton. An outer neck panel may be connected to each divider panel at an upper edge thereof and arranged to extend outwardly from the divider panel on erection. A skirt panel may extend from each outer neck panel, the skirt panel being arranged to extend vertically against a side wall of the erected carton. The blank may include a bridge panel interconnecting the two divider panels or two of the divider panels and arranged to lie against a side wall of the erected carton, a central neck panel extending from an upper edge of the bridge panel. A tongue panel may extend from the central neck panel and be arranged to extend vertically on erection, either against a side wall of the carton or against another such tongue panel.
[0007] From a third aspect, the invention provides a packaging carton formed from a blank according to the first aspect of the invention.
[0008] From a fourth aspect, the invention provides an insert formed from a blank according to the second aspect of the invention.
Brief Description of the Drawings
[0009] Embodiments of the invention will now be described in more detail, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: [0010] Figure 1 is a plan of a blank for forming a carton according to the invention; [0011] Figure 2 is a cut-away view of a carton formed from the blank of Figure 1; [0012] Figure 3 is a view of the carton of Figure 2 from above, containing bottles; [0013] Figure 4 is a plan of a blank for forming an insert according to the invention; [0014] Figure 5 shows an insert formed from the blank of Figure 4, with bottles; and [0015] Figure 6 is a plan of an alternative blank for forming an insert.
Detailed Description of Particular Embodiments
[0016] Figures 1, 4 and 6 show blanks cut and creased from double-faced corrugated paperboard. Solid lines denote cuts, dashed lines denote creases and hatched regions show where adhesive is applied.
[0017] Figure 1 shows the "inside" of a blank for forming a carton for packaging six bottles. The bTank includes walT paneTs arranged in a series, namely a first part side paneT 1, a first end paneT 2, a side paneT 3, a second end panel 4 and a second part side panel 5, having a width approximately two-thirds that of the side panel 3. Base flaps 6 extend from lower edges of each of the panels 1-5 and top flaps 7 extend from upper edges thereof. A strip of adhesive 8 extends along the free edges of the first part side panels and its base and top flaps 6, 7. A further strip of adhesive 9 is provided centrally in a lower part of the side panel 3.
[0018] The series of panels continues with a first divider panel 10, a bridge panel 11, a second divider panel 12 and an adhesive-coated tab 13. The widths of the divider panels 10, 12 are substantially equal to the widths of the end panels 2, 4 and the width of the bridge panel is substantiaTly one-third that of the side panel 3.
[0019] A partition 14, 15 is partially cut from, and hinged at vertical hinge lines to, each of the respective divider panels 10, 12. One side of each partition 14, 15 is yoke-shaped with horizontaTly-extending legs 16, and the ends of the Tegs of the first partition 14 bear adhesive.
[0020] Outer neck panels 17 extend from the upper edges of the divider panels 10, 12 and skirt panels 18 extend from the respective outer neck panels 16. Two elongate holes 19 extend across each crease line between the outer neck panels 16 and the skirt panels 17.
[0021] A central neck panel 20 extends from the upper edge of the bridge panel 11. The central neck panel has a "dumbbell" shaped hole 21 with ends sized to receive the neck of wine bottles. A tongue panel 22 extends from the end of the central neck panel 19 uppermost in Figure 1.
[0022] The blank of Figure 1 is folded firstly along the crease line between the first divider paneT 10 and the bridge panel 11 until the ends of the Tegs 16 of the second partition 15 contact and are glued to the ends of the legs 16 of the first partition 14 and are glued thereto. Also, the tab 13 contacts the mid point of the second part side panel 5 and is glued thereto.
[0023] Next, the blank is folded along the crease line between the side panel 3 and the second end panel 4. The adhesive strip 9 contacts the outside of the bridge panel 11 and is glued thereto. FinaTly the blank is foTded along the crease line between the first part side panel 1 and the first end panel 2 and the adhesive strip 8 is glued to the outside of the second part side panel 5. In this flat-folded, glued condition, the blank can be supplied to a customer.
[0024] Tn order to package bottles, the blank is opened by partially unfolding the crease lines between the first part side panel 1 and the first end panel 2 and between the side panel 3 and the second end panel 4, whilst folding the first end panel 2 to a right angle with the side panel 3 and folding the second end panel 4 to a right angle with the second part side panel 5. Tn other words, a tube of rectangular cross-section is formed from the paneTs 1-5. Simultaneously, due to the gluing previously effected, the divider panels 10, 12 assume a position at right angles to the end panels 2, 4 and dividing the carton into three equal parts. Also, as the divider panels 10, 12 move away from each other, the partitions 14, 15 assume a position at right angles thereto due to being glued together. Thus six compartments are formed in the carton. The base flaps 6 are then folded and sealed together and the carton appears as shown cut-away in Figure 2.
[0025] A bottle is inserted into each of the compartments of the carton. Then the outer neck panels 17 are folded so that their holes 19 fit over the necks of the bottles closest to the end panels 2, 4. The skirt panels 18 are folded upwardly against upper parts of these end panels. The central neck panel 20 is then folded downwardly so that its hole 21 fits over the necks of the remaining two bottles and the tongue panel 22 is folded downwardly against the second part side panel 5. The carton then appears as shown in Figure 3. Finally the top flaps 7 are folded and sealed together.
[0026] Figure 4 shows the "inside" a blank for forming twelve compartments for bottles within a carton. The blank comprises a series of rectanguTar panels connected at crease lines, namely a first bridge panel 51, a link panel 52, a first divider panel 53, a second bridge panel 54 and a second divider panel 55. An adhesive-coated tab 56 extends from the end of the second divider panel 55 remote from the second bridge panel 54. An adhesive strip 57 is provided centrally on the link panel 52.
[0027] Three partitions 58, 59 are partially cut from, and hinged at vertical hinge lines to, each of the respective divider panels 53, 55. One side of each partition 58, 59 is yoke-shaped with horizontally-extending legs 60, and the ends of the legs of the first three partitions 58 bear adhesive.
[0028] Outer neck panels 61 extend from the upper edges of the divider panels 53, and skirt panels 62 extend from the respective outer neck panels 61. Four elongate holes 63 extend across each crease line between the outer neck panels 61 and the skirt panels 62.
[0029] A first central neck panel 64 extends from a point within the first bridge panel 51 leveT with the upper edges of the divider panels 53, 55. A second central neck panel 65 extends from the upper edge of the second bridge panel 54. Each of the central neck panels 64, 65 has a "dumbbell" shaped hole 66 with ends sized to receive the neck of wine bottles. A tongue panel 67 extends from the end of each central neck panel 64, 65.
[0030] The blank of Figure 4 is folded firstly along the crease line between the second bridge panel 54 and the second divider panel 55 until the ends of the legs 61 of the second partitions 59 contact and are glued to the ends of the legs 61 of the first partitions 58 and are glued thereto. Next, the first bridge panel 51 is folded against the link panel 52 and is glued thereto by means of the adhesive strip 57 and simultaneously glued to the tab 56. In this flat-folded, glued condition, the blank can be supplied to a customer.
[0031] A conventional blank for an outer carton is also suppTied, having end panels of size and shape substantialTy the same as the first bridge panel 51, and side panels each having a length sLibstantially equal to that of the divider panels 53, 55 and a height substantially equal to the sum of the heights of one of the divider panels 53, 55 and one of the skirt panels 62.
[0032] After erecting the outer carton, the insert can be erected by partially unfolding the crease lines between the first divider panel 53 and the second bridge panel 54 and between the second divider panel 55 and the tab 56, whilst folding the first divider paneT 53 to a right angle with the Tink panel 52 and folding the second divider panel 55 to a right angle with the second bridge panel 54. Thus the divider panels 53, 55 assume a position paralTel to and spaced from each other. As the divider panels 53, 55 move away from each other, the partitions 58, 59 assume a position at right angTes thereto due to being glued together.
[0033] The insert can then be inserted into the erected outer carton where it forms twelve compartments. A bottle is inserted into each compartment. Then the outer neck panels 61 are folded so that their holes 63 fit over the necks of the bottles on outer sides of the divider panels 53, 55. The skirt panels 62 are folded upwardly against upper parts of these side walls of the outer carton. The central neck panels 64, 65 are then folded downwardly so that their holes 66 fit over the necks of the remaining four bottles and the tongue panels 67 are folded downwardly against each other.
[0034] For the purposes of illustration only, Figure 5 shows the insert formed from the blank of Figure 4 fitted over twelve bottles.
[0035] Figure 6 shows a blank similar to that of Figure 4, but for fifteen bottles arranged in three rows of five.
