Description
SCAFFOLDING COUPLERS
This invention relates to scaffolding couplers, hereinafter referred to as being of the type specified, for connecting a scaffolding element to a vertical scaffold member, the coupler comprising a body member attached to the element, a hook-shaped member supported from the body member for engagement inside an open topped support member provided on the vertical scaffold member, a bracing member pivoted on the body member and having a first bracing surface for contact with the vertical scaffold member below the support member to prevent disengagement of the hook-shaped member from the vertical scaffold member, and a wedging member which acts between a bracing surface on the body member and a second bracing surface on the bracing member to hold the first bracing surface of the bracing member against the vertical scaffold member to prevent disengagement of the hook-shaped member from the vertical scaffold member.
There is a requirement to provide an improved coupler of the type specified which provides additiona! security against disengagement from the open topped support member.
Thus according to the present invention there is provided a scaffolding coupler for connecting a scaffolding element to a vertical scaffold member the coupler comprising a body member attached to the element, a hook-shaped member supported from the body member for engagement inside an open topped support member provided on the vertical scaffold member, a bracing member pivoted on the body member and having a first bracing surface for contact with the vertical scaffold member below the support member to prevent disengagement of the hook-shaped member from the vertical scaffold member, and a wedging member which acts between a bracing surface on the body member and a second bracing surface on the bracing member to hold the first bracing surface of the bracing member against the vertical scaffold member to prevent disengagement of the hook-shaped member from the vertical scaffold member, the coupler also including a locking means which prevents pivoting of the bracing member when engaged with the vertical scaffold member to provide additional security against the disengagement of the hook-shaped member from the open topped support member The bracing member and wedging member may both be mounted within the body member and the locking means may comprise a fastening member which extends through the body member and engages the bracing member at a location displaced from its pivotal attachment to the body member to prevent pivoting of the bracing member relative to the body member.
The fastening member may comprise a bolt and cooperating nut which extends through a slot in the body member.
The bolt may have an elongated head which can pass through the slot in one rotational orientation for easy insertion or removal.
The bolt may have a shank which carries an abutment member which contacts a side of the slot thus preventing further rotation of the boit when the shank has been rotated so that the elongated head can no longer be withdrawn through the slot to facilitate tightening of the nut on the bolt.
The abutment member may contact another side of the slot when the elongated bolt head is in the correct rotational orientation for inserting through the slot.
The invention also provides a scaffolding element having a coupler as described above for securing the scaffolding element to a vertical scaffolding member The present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:-Figures 1 and 2 show a perspective views of a scaffolding coupler in accordance with the present invention from above and below respectively; Figures 3 and 4 show plan and side views of the coupler of Figures 1 and 2; Figures 5 and 6 show sections on lines A-A and B-B of Figures 3 and 4 respectively; Figure 7 shows a perspective view of a locking nut and bolt suitable for use in the coupler of the present invention, and Figures 8 to 12 show perspective views, some partly cut away, of various stages in the insertion of the locking nut and bolt in the coupler of the present invention.
Referring to the drawings, the coupler 10 has a body member 11 attached to a scaffolding element 12 for connecting the scaffolding element to a vertical scaffold member 13 which has an open topped cup-like support member 14. A hook-shaped member 15 extends from body member 11 for engagement inside the open topped support member 14 (see Figure 4) provided on the vertical scaffold member 13. The scaffolding element 12 can be part of side frame or a guard rail or a decking element or any other scaffoiding component which it is desired to fasten to the verticai member 13. Although shown as being of rectangular section in Figure 1, scaffolding element 12 can be, for example, a circular section hollow tibe welded to the top of body member 11.
A bracing member 16 pivoted by a rivet pin 17 on the body memberl 1 and has a first bracing surface 18 for contact with the vertical scaffold member 13 below the support member 14 to prevent disengagement of the hook-shaped member 15 from the support member 14 of the vertical scaffold member. A wedging member 19 captive via a slot 19a on pin 17 acts between a bracing surface 20 on the body member 11 and a second bracing surface 21 on the bracing member 16 to hold the first bracing surface 18 of the bracing member 16 against the vertical scaffold member 13 to prevent disengagement of the hook-shaped member 15 from the support member 14 of the vertical scaffold memberl3.
As can be seen from the drawings which the bracing member 16 and wedging member 19 are both mounted within the body member 11 which comprises a generally U-shaped component with which the hook-shaped member 15, in the form of two hook-shaped portions 1 5a, is integrally formed. A fill in piece I 5b (see Figure 4) is welded between hook-shaped portions 15a.
In accordance with the present invention the coupler is provided with a fastening member in the form of a bolt 22 and co-operating nut 23 (see Figure 7) which, when in its operating position, extends through slots 24 provided in body member 11.
Bolt 22 extends through the body member 11 and engages the bracing member 16 at a location 25 displaced from its pivotal attachment at 17 to the body member to prevent pivoting of the bracing member 16 relative to the body member 11 so that the hook-shaped member 15 coupler cannot disengage the support member 14 of the vertical scaffold member.
The bolt 22 has a an elongated head 26 which can pass through the slots 24 in one rotational orientation for easy insertion or removal but which when turned through 90 degrees is heid captive in the &ots 24. The shank 27 of boft 22 carries two abutment members 28a and 28b which contact sides 24a and 24b of one of the slots 24 when the shank has been rotated so that the elongated head 26 can be inserted through the slots 24 (see Figures 8 to Ii). When the bolt 22 has been rotated so that the bolt can no longer be withdrawn through the slots 24 (see Figure 12) the other sides 24b and 24a of one of the slots 24 are contacted by the abutment members 28a and 28b to prevent further rotation of the bolt and thus help to facilitate the tightening of the nut 23 on the bolt 22. If desired only one abutment member 28a or 28b may be provided on the bolt 22.
Thus to insert the bolt 22 the bolt shank 27 is aligned with the slots 24 with the abutment member 28 in the orientation shown in Figure 8 and the bolt is inserted through the slots 24 in the direction of arrow X in Figure 8 to the position shown in Figure 9. The bolt is then rotated, as indicated by the arrow Y in Figure 11, until the elongated head is in the position shown in Figure 12 in which the abutment member 27 contacts the side 24b of one of the slots 24. The nut 23 is then tightened to ensure that it remains in position and thus engages the bracing member 16 at location 25 below pin 17 thus preventing pivoting of the bracing member 16 relative to the body member 11 so that the hook-shaped member 15 coupler cannot disengage the support member 14 of the vertical scaffold member. The nut 23 may be held captive on bolt 22, for example by spoiling the end of the bolt thread or by a spot of weld.
The present invention thus provides an improved form of coupler of the type specified which provides additional security against accidental or unauthorised disengagement from the open topped support member. t
