Abstract
A flexible collapsible curtain for hanging as a football pitch backstop characterised by a flap 6 protruding from the plane of the curtain to define a goal having a goal mouth 4 in the plane of the curtain wherein in use the edges of the goal mouth 4 can be defined by tension in the curtain. A removable rigid frame may be provided to assist in defining the goal mouth. Weights, tethers or pegs 7 may be used to hold the curtain in position. The curtain may be a mesh or fabric and made of plastic. A folded over portion may be provided to receive a string from which the curtain can be hung. Also disclosed is a method of suspending a curtain in a garden.
Description
1
Football Goal Background
5 One of the biggest frustrations of playing football in the garden or playground or other confined spaces is that if you shoot the ball at the goal and miss, the ball may fly over the fence into another place, break a window, or smash something like the fence.
In addition, if the goals that are used (whether a formal plastic or metal structure, 10 or simply two jumpers on the ground) do not have netting, then even scoring a goal can leave the football some way away or cause damage.
Therefore there is a need for a football goal that helps prevent ball escape from the end or ends of the pitch where the goals are.
15
In addition, many parents complain of the eyesore that is 1 or 2 large white goals permanently positioned in their small back garden. They look unsightly and they get in the way when football is not being played.
20 It would therefore be advantageous if there was a football goal that could virtually disappear quickly and easily between games.
The present invention therefore provides an all-in-one football goal curtain that acts as both a football goal and backstop to prevent ball escape, without any rigid poles, 25 and that collapses and can be folded away like a curtain simply by removal of the tension and ground pegs; as set forth in claim 1 of the appended claims.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is further provided a method of creating a collapsible football goal as set forth in claim 14 of the appended 30 claims.
The prior art discloses a number of Patents and Applications (such as WO 2009/149402 A1; US 2007/0158913 A1; US 2009/0209372 A1; US 6,849,009 B1). As is shown, conventional solutions to providing a backstop system involve attachment to an 35 existing goal, and/or include a goal portion made of rigid poles. The present invention seeks to improve on this by providing an integral goal and backstop curtain having no
2
rigid members to provide the structure of the goal. This makes it very easily erectable and collapsible. As erection of the goal and the backstop is provided entirely by tensioning either the net or the rope, in the absence of any rigid members such as those shown in the prior art, removal of the tension enables the entire goal and backstop to be 5 collapsed or retracted, and if desired folded for storage.
One exception to the above is provided by US5277430. This patent discloses an all in one backstop and goal portion formed from a one piece net or curtain. In the embodiment disclosed it is intended for attachment over the mouth of an open garage. One limitation of the disclosure is the requirement to insert a rigid goal mouth to help 10 define its shape. This inclusion prevents the goal and backstop from being quickly and easily retracted and makes the collapsed apparatus significantly heavier and bulkier than the solution proposed by the present invention.
3
Description
The present invention delivers the solution to the two problems described above; in that it captures the ball whether the ball goes in the goal or misses, and it may easily 5 retract and virtually disappear when not in use.
According to the present invention there is provided a football goal as set forth in claim 1 of the appended claims, and a method of erecting a football goal as set forth in claim 14 of the appended claims.
10
Figures 1-4 illustrate the invention; that being a substantial area of netting that has been modified to allow the creation of a 3D football goal from a sheet, and one that can be closed away after use just like a curtain.
15 Figure 1 shows the back stop in a collapsed position and Figure 3, in an erected position.
Figure 2 shows the main netting in place before the football goal has been secured into place.
20 A cable (marked 1 on figure 1) is suspended above the desired goal-line from a solid location at either end (marked 2 on figure 1). That solid location could be a tree, a post, a fence, a wall, a designed pole, or some other. Additionally the cable may be permanently attached, or with hooks to allow it to be removed or retracted to one end like a retractable washing line.
25
A substantial area of curtain (marked 3 on figure 2), larger than the goal mouth within it, hangs from the overhead cable. It opens and closes like a conventional window curtain. It may be attached by curtain hooks or loops, or the cable may be threaded through the netting or a sleeve attached to the top of the netting, or other. Alternatively
30 there may be no cable at all and the net could be attached from its corners.
The hanging curtain is larger than the goal mouth within it; ideally as wide and high as possible, so as to cover as much of the breadth and height of the goal line as possible to prevent the ball from escaping.
35
4
The hanging curtain and/or goal portion may be tensioned width ways by at least one tether, or for example a tethering rope (as marked 9 in figure 4). Vertical tension may also be provided by these same tethers and additional tension imparted at ground level. This may consist of tent pegs or some other means of securing the curtain at ground 5 level. Alternatively weights may be used to hold the base of the curtain at ground level. This helps the goal form a structured goal mouth shape without the need for rigid posts.
The present invention is therefore capable of performing all the required functions of a back stop and a goal without the need for rigid posts to be inserted as a framework 10 into the back stop or goal in order to provide structure. It may still be desirable to provide such a frame work in order to provide a tangible post. The framework may consist of interlocking plastic or metal tubes or may be inflatable. The framework is typically inserted into sleeves within the curtain provided at the edges of the goal mouth. This will enable players of a game to determine without ambiguity if a ball has "hit the post" such as may 15 occur when playing with a permanent goal structure. What is essential is that the goal back stop and goal mouth may be erected and clearly defined without the need for such support members, and their use should be deemed as optional.
In the goal area of the net curtain (marked 4 on figure 3), the net may be modified 20 with extra panels of netting inserted (marked 5 on figure 3) to allow it to retain the ball when the flap is pulled backward into the shape of a football goal.
When the flap (marked 6 on figure 3) is pulled back into position, the goal shape is then attached to the ground either by pegs in key locations (such as marked 7 on figure 25 3), or by weights, or other method. This is both to establish the shape of the goal and to prevent ball escape under the foot of the net.
The rest of the width of the main net may be attached to the ground in the same way as above (such as marked 8 on figure 3).
30
It may be that the vertices of the goal mouth section are marked or have some form of material attached so as to give the appearance of goalposts and crossbar.
