Abstract

A marking gauge for marking a profiled cutting line onto floor tiles to be laid at the edge of a room comprises an adjustable sleeve 1 that can be manually moved along a distancing rod 3 and secured in place by securement means 5. Also attached to the adjustable sleeve is a pencil/marker pen housing 7 including a means 2 for securing a pencil/marker pen in position. A low friction end cap 4, which makes contact with the surfaces that are to be abutted, is situated at the forward working end of the rod. The rod may be made up of separate attachable/detachable sections to allow it to be lengthened or shortened. In use, the end of the rod is placed against a wall or skirting board and the marker is guided across the tile following the profile of the wall or skirting board. The tool allows tiles to be cut to fit against walls that are curved or that have grouting, pointing or expansion joints.

Description

1
Marking gauge
This invention relates to a device for determining and marking a profiled cutting line onto floor tiles which are to be laid around the edge of a room.
There is a technique, rather than a device, which professional tilers have adopted for working out such cuts, using the actual tiles themselves as templates. However, that method is limited to straight line marking only and does not address the problem that many walls undulate and curve. Furthermore, that method does not make any allowance for grouting, pointing or expansion joints which may also be required. These corrective adjustments have to be transferred onto the tile afterwards and may require forming a cardboard template, in order to do so. To overcome this, the present invention proposes a marking gauge which can determine the profile of a wall or a skirting board that is to be abutted by a floor tile and mark that profiled cutting line onto a tile, allowing for any grouting, pointing or expansion joints that may be required.
An example of the invention will now be described by referring to the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 shows a plan view of a marking gauge.
Figure 2 shows a side view of a marking gauge with a pencil secured within an apertured pencil/marker pen housing.
Figure 3 shows a distancing rod made up of separate sections.
A marker pen/pencil is secured within an apertured pencil/marking pen housing 7 by a means provided by 2. The adjustable sleeve 1 is manually moved along the distancing rod 3 until the low friction end cap 4, which makes contact with the wall or skirting board that is to be abutted, and the point of the marker pen or pencil 6 corresponds with the length or the width of a full tile that is to be cut ,as applicable. Any grouting, pointing or expansion joints are now added on and the adjustable sleeve 1 is secured in position by a means provided by 5.
The marking gauge is now set and ready to use.
Position a tile that is to be marked for cutting, face side up, so that it lays exactly on top of one of the last laid full tiles around the edge of the room.
Place the distancing rod low friction end cap 4 against the wall or skirting board that is to be abutted. Using both hands to ensure that the distancing rod 3 remains in contact with the surface
2
that is to be abutted and parallel to the left and right hand edges of the tile that is being marked for cutting, carefully guide the marker pen/pencil 6 across the tile so that the profiled line of cut is marked upon the surface of the tile, from one edge to the other.
The tile is now marked for cutting, with the profiled section of tile, furthest away from the wall that is to be abutted, being the relevant portion of the tile that needs to be retained.
The distancing rod 3 can be made of separate attachable/detachable sections which would allow the distancing rod 3 to be lengthened or shortened accordingly. A means of attachment is provided by 8. (See figure 3).
The distancing rod 3 would ideally be made of metal, wood or a suitable synthetic material.
The low friction end cap 4, which helps the device travel more smoothly over rougher surfaces, would ideally be made of metal or a suitable synthetic material, and may only be necessary to the invention, as a separate competent, if the distancing rod 3 is of a wooden form.
