Abstract
A tool to assist in the fitting of household door hinges and cupboard hinges, used in conjunction with a power drill. The tool comprises a base (A) that can incorporate a cutter (D) powered from a drill. A sleeve (F) restricts the movement of the cutter and controls the depth of the cut by moving the sleeve up or down to the desired position and then securing it by screwing in the handle (G). The base also has an adjustable guide (B), which sets the tool a defined distance from the edge of the work piece. The guide slides to the desired position and is then held in position by tightening the hand screws (C).
Description
1
Description (1/5)
Background:
This invention relates to fitting butt hinges and cupboard hinges in doors and frames.
When fitting a door, hinges must be fitted to the edge of the door and frame. When using butt hinges, a small section of the wood where the hinge is to be fitted, must be removed to allow the hinge to fit into. This is usually done using a hammer and chisel or an electric router.
This invention, although primarily designed for this operation, could be used in other applications such as fitting kitchen cupboard door hinges.
Statement of inventorship
According to the present invention there is provided a cutting tool for use in cutting into an object, the cutting tool comprising: a base for positioning the cutting tool adjacent to the object, wherein the cutting tool is arranged to hold a cutter such that in use the cutter protrudes from the base for making a cut into the object; a guide for aligning the cutting tool with an edge of the object wherein the position of the guide is adjustable such that in use the distance between the edge of the object and a cut into the object made by the cutter held by the cutting tool is adjustable; and adjustable depth setting means for setting an adjustable limit to the extent to which the cutter held by the cutting tool in use is able to protrude from the base, to thereby set a maximum depth for a cut into the object made by the cutter in use.
In preferred embodiments the cutting tool further comprises the cutter arranged for protruding from the base for making a cut into the object, wherein the cutter is driveable by a drill. In preferred embodiments the cutter is moveable between: (i) a cutting position in which the cutter protrudes from the base by an extent according to said adjustable limit set by the depth setting means, and (ii) a non-cutting position in which the cutter does not protrude from the base. The cutter may be arranged to pass through the base in use in order to cut into the object.
The depth setting means may comprise a sleeve coupled to the cutter which restricts the movement of the cutter to thereby set the limit to the extent to which the cutter is able to protrude from the base. The cutting tool may further comprise coupling means for coupling the sleeve to the cutter, wherein the coupling means allows the sleeve to be coupled at different positions along the cutter to thereby adjust the limit to the extent to which the cutter is able to protrude from the base.
Alternatively, the depth setting means may comprise a double nut locking system coupled to the cutter arranged to adjustably set the limit to the extent to which the cutter is able to protrude from the base.
2
Description (2/5)
In preferred embodiments the guide is shaped to avoid the cutter such that, in use, the guide is able to align the cutting tool with the edge of the object whilst the cutter makes a cut into the edge of the object.
Preferably, the cutter comprises a hexagonal connection such that the cutter is driveable by a handheld, chucked drill.
The cutting tool may further comprise adjustable fixing means for fixing the guide in an adjustable position (e.g. an adjustable position relative to the cutter). In one embodiment the adjustable fixing means comprises screws for fixing the guide in a position, wherein the cutting tool is configured such that loosening the screws allows the position of the guide (e.g. the position of the guide relative to the cutter) to be adjusted.
The guide may protrude from the base by an amount in the range 1mm to 1cm, for example by 5mm. In this way the cutting tool can be used for cutting into a door frame when there is architrave in place.
The object that the cutting tool is used to cut into may be one of: (i) a door, (ii) a door frame, (iii) a cupboard door, and (iv) a cupboard frame.
There are presented below descriptions of specific embodiments of the invention which are not limiting to the scope of the invention.

Description (3/5)
Advantages
This will be a quicker and easier method of fitting a hinge than just with a hammer and chisel but hopefully at a lesser cost than an electric router. It is also more manouverable than a router.
Preferably it will also be able to be used on the door frames when there is architrave and door stop without being obstructed by them. This will be due to the design of the base, guide and components.
Preferably the cutter will be a standard hexagon shape at the top of the shaft so that it can be inserted directly into the chuck of the drill or into existing speed fits (shown in Figures 4,5 and 9)
