Channelling; trimming.-In a simple machine, for use by boot repairers, for trimming and channelling the edge of a sole, the work, on a last, is supported on a reciprocating table 33 provided with a channelling knife 34, and is controlled by a single element actuated to press on the work and also serving as a work guide. A frame 3 with a base 3<a> supports a cam-shaft 4 and rock-shaft 9. This shaft is rocked by an arm 10 provided with a roll engaging a cam on the shaft 4. A head 17 which can slide along, but is constrained to rock with, the shaft 9 carries an arm 18 reciprocated axially of the rod 9 by a cam, and an arm 23 to which is detachably and adjustably secured a work presser and guide 26. This member is thus given a four-way motion. The table 33 is slidable vertically in a frame 36 rocked about a pivot rod 40 by a cam roll 39. The table is depressed, to permit insertion of and removal of work, by a treadle connected by a chain with a hook 35f. A trimming knife 15 is operated by an eccentric on the shaft 4 and co-operates with a cutting block 25 projecting below the presser 26. Fig. 1 shows a form of cutting block adapted for use with welted shoes, the edge of the block serving as a welt guide. Fig. 2 shows a modification, for use with McKay shoes, the block projecting beyond the member 26 into the space between the inner and outer soles, the end of the member 26 then engaging the upper 49 to guide the work. This form of the invention may be used for welted shoes by causing the edge of the welt to engage the member 26. A handle 30 enables the member 26 to be adjusted to vary the trimming line, and a similar handle 48 adjusts the channelling line by shifting the rod 40 axially, a set screw 43 being provided to clamp the rod in adjusted position.
