Abstract

A plasterless orthognathic dental articulator is disclosed. It comprises adjustable upper and lower articulator arms 1, 2 that move up and down a back member 3 formed of two cylindrical members. A dental model of the jaw may be placed on the arms 1, 2 and the arms 1, 2 may be adjusted to the required vertical jaw position. The articulator is able to set the angle, cant and position of the upper and lower dental models by using attachments that comprise a number of discs 8, 9 and domes 10, 11, 12 that are able to be locked into a desired position. The back member 3 optionally comprises a ruler to record the vertical dimension. The models are preferably held on a plate 15 using abutments 18 that are moved by means of a screw mechanism 17. The articulator may be used in othognathic planning and model surgery.

Description

1
adjustable orthognathic/prosthetic plasterless dental articulator description background the invention consists of a back member and, upper and lower articulator arms that make the basic articulator. Attached to the arms are a series of plates and domes that enable the position of a dental model to be set and locked into a fixed position The attachments are able to be removed from the articulator and used on other dental articulators the invention can be used in orthognathic cases when the attachment "dental model repositioning articulator attachment for use in production of orthognathic wafers", application number:GB1117815.9 Is used current plasterless dental articulators have a fixed lower arm that is able to hold a dental model by use of a single thread screw that pushes the dental model backwards toward two fixed points thus holding the model in place toward to rear of the lower articulator arm. This position is fixed as the lower arm is not adjustable
The invention aims to secure the dental model in the centre of the lower articulator arm (and also the upper articulator arm) on a plate that is able to move and angle/cant to a desired position before it is locked into that position.
The upper arm of current plasterless dental articulators hold the dental model in the same manner as the lower and is able to move to a desired position and angle before it is locked into that position. This locking mechanism consists of a rod that has a ball on the end to which is clamped the upper articulator arm however, these type of ball and clamp mechanisms have a tendency to move once they have been set due to insufficient surface tension between the ball and clamp.
The invention aims to solve this movement problem by increasing the surface tension of the locking mechanism by use of a dome that is coated in a silicon or rubber material and is clamped between two other domes current plasterless dental articulators are unable to be used for the production of orthognathic wafers/splints due to their inability to hold a bite fork registration and a lower articulator arm that is unable to move the invention aims to solve this by use of an attachment that can be located on the lower articulator arm that is able to hold a bite fork registration. The invention is able to allow the upper articulator arm to move upwards and downwards by sliding along the back member of the articulator and position the upper dental model into the bite fork in the correct position and angle/cant
2
the invention also allows the lower articulator arm to move upwards and downwards by sliding along the back member of the articulator and position the lower dental model in the correct occlusal relationship with the upper dental model in the correct angle/cant detailed description the invention is an adjustable orthognathic/prosthetic plasterless dental articulator that is able to open and close to a given vertical dimension by means of enabling the upper arm(1) and lower arm(2) of the articulator to slide up or down the back member(3) of the articulator and lock into position with thumbscrews(4).
The back member(3) consists of two cylindrical lengths that are joined together and have a rule(5) to record the vertical dimension measurements
The lower articulator arm(2) is a fixed one piece arm where the centre is at right angles to the back member of the articulator.
the upper articulator arm has two parts/sections, the arm itself(1) and the section that moves up or down the back member of the articulator(23)
The articulator upper arm (both parts) can be removed by sliding it off the back member.
The lower articulator arm can be removed be sliding it off the back member.
the back member(3) has stops at each end(24). the back member is able to be fixed into a stand at the lower end the upper articulator arm is able to move into the Frankfort plane or campers plane or optic plane in relation to the upper and lower dental model positions
The upper articulator arm has two protruding parts (wings) at the back(28) which have a singe void(25) in each of them to which a thumbscrew(4) passes through to locate into the second section(23) of the upper articulator arm that is attached to the back member of the articulator.
This gives the lateral movements to the upper dental articulator arm that is required when setting balanced occlusion of the prosthetics the upper articulator arm has a screw(26) that passes downward through the middle of the rear section and rests on the second section of the articulator arm that is angled(27). By turning the screw the arm is able to angle upwards or downwards in relation to the back section of the articulator the plasterless dental articulator is able to attach to the upper arm the existing invention of the "dental model repositioning articulator attachment for use in production of orthognathic wafers", application number:GB1117815.9
The plasterless dental articulator is able to attach to the lower arm the existing invention of the "dental model repositioning articulator attachment for use in production of orthognathic wafers", application number:GB1117815.9
3
This enables the invention to be used in orthognathic planning by having the ability to accurately move the upper and lower models to new positions (model surgery) simulating orthognathic surgery the lower arm and attachment
The lower articulator arm extends from the back member and has a circular void in the centre(6).
A thumbscrew(7) passes through a disk(8) and through the lower articulator arm circular void(6) and through a second disk(9) and this gives a free movement within the circular void to a desired position. The disk(9) has locating holes(14) on the underside so that the whole lower attachment(20) can be used on other articulators
The screw then passes through a dome(10) and a second dome(11) and a third dome(12) and a securing nut(13)
The dome(10) is connected to the dome(12) by a cylindrical sheath(30) that runs along part of the thumbscrew. This stops the dome(12) from becoming disconnected when the thumbscrew(7) is removed.
disk 9 and dome 10 are joined together to enable stability of the attachment
Dome(11) is able to freely move between dome(10) and dome(12) and is coated in a rubber type material to increase friction.
When the thumbscrew(7) is tightened it locks plate(8) and plate(9) into a position on the articulator arm within the circular void(6) and also locks the dome(11) between dome(10) and dome(12) simultaneously, thus setting the angle/cant and position of the plate(15)
Dome(11) is attached to a plate(15) which is able to cant at an angle dictated and has a rectangular slot (void) along the diameter line(16).
Plate(15) is able to hold a dental model by use of a screw mechanism(17) located under it that moves two abutments(18) that pass through the slot.
when the thumbscrew(29) is turned the abutments move toward or away from each other to centrally position the dental model by means of having the screw thread going from the centre of the screw in opposing directions with one abutment on each thread type.
the plates(15) have a rough surface to act as a means of retention should a dental model be required to be mounted on it using plaster the plates(15) and the screw mechanism(17) and the screw abutments(18) are able to detach from the dome(11) so that the attachment "dental model repositioning articulator attachment for use in production of orthognathic wafers", application number:GB1117815.9 can be attached to it.
the end of the lower articulator arm has the means to attach a device that is able to locate a bite fork(21). this is obtained from the patient using a facebow record, this
4
record shows the cant/angle to which the upper plate is set when using the articulator to produce orthognathic wafers/splints the upper arm and attachment the upper attachment is the same as the lower attachment
The upper articulator arm extends from the back member and has a circular void in the centre(6).

The disk(9) has locating holes(14) on the underside so that the whole upper attachment(19) can be used on other articulators
The screw then passes through a dome(10) and a second dome(11) and a third dome(12) and a securing nut(13)
The dome(10) is connected to the dome(12) by a cylindrical sheath(30) that runs along part of the thumbscrew. This stops the dome disk(12) from becoming disconnected when the thumbscrew(7) is removed.
disk 9 and dome 10 are joined together to enable stability of the attachment
The end of the upper articulator arm has a means to attach a device that is able to locate a vertical dimension rod(22).
