Abstract

A glazing barrier device 16 comprises a body 18 mounted to a glazing support and having a plurality of deformable first protrusions 20 protruding from a surface thereof, wherein the first protrusions are adapted to engage a glazing pane. A first intumescent element 24 located in the body has a second protrusion 26 adapted to protrude from the body as a result of intumescence of the first intumescent element to cover at least part of the glazing pane. The protrusions 20, which may be tapered, form air pockets 30 which when there is a fire, resist the passage of heat and smoke from one side of the window to the other. There may be a second body 8 located below the window glass 14, the second body having a second intumescent element 12 located within it, preferably in the centre.

Description

GLAZING BARRIER DEVICE AND GLAZING BARRIER ASSEMBLY
The present invention relates to a glazing barrier device and to a glazing barrier assembly incorporating such a S device.
Fire seals for doors or windows are known in which a seal having a core of intumescent material adapted to expand on heating is surrounded by a skin of non-flammable polymer, and is located between a door or window and the surrounding door or window frame. In the event of a fire, combustion of the intumescent material causes it to expand and seal the gap between the door or window and the surrounding frame, thereby slowing the advance of fire.
Existing arrangements suffer from the drawback that in the case of a window, radiant heat passing through the window pane can cause a fire to be transmitted from one side of the window to the other.
Preferred embodiments of the present invention seek to
mitigate the above disadvantage of the prior art.
According to an aspect of the present invention, there is provided a glazing barrier device comprising:-a first body adapted to be mounted to a glazing support and having a plurality of deformable first protrusions protruding from at least one surface thereof, wherein said first protrusions are adapted to engage a glazing pane; and at least one first intumescent element located in said body and having at least one second protrusion adapted to protrude from said body as a result of intumescence of said first intumescent element to cover at least part of said glazing pane.
By providing at least one first intumescent element located in said body and having at least one second protrusion adapted to protrude from said body as a result of intumescence of said first intumescent element to cover at least part of said glazing pane, this provides the advantage that the first intumescent element can therefore be to cover a larger proportion of the glazing pane, thereby reducing the extent to which radiant heat is transmitted through the glazing pane.
At least one said first intumescent member may have a respective second body having substantially rectangular cross section and at least one said second protrusion may extend from a corner region of said second body.
This provides the advantage of maximising the extent to which intumescence of the first intumescent member causes the intumescent material to spread across the surface of the glazing panel.
A plurality of said first protrusions may be inclined relative to a surface of said first body.
This provides the advantage of enabling the second protrusions to engage a surface of the glazing pane to form air pockets, thereby minimising passage of smoke.
At least one said first protrusion may have a tapering cross section in a direction extending away from said first body.
This provides the advantage of increasing the flexibility of the first protrusions, thereby improving the sealing effect.
According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a glazing barrier assembly comprising:-at least one glazing barrier device as defined above; and at least one glazing support device comprising a respective third body, adapted to engage an end face of a glazing pane and an end face of at least one said glazing barrier device, and at least one second intumescent element located in said third body.
By providing at least one glazing support device comprising a respective third body, adapted to engage an end face of a glazing pane and an end face of at least one said glazing barrier device, and at least one second intumescent element located in said third body, this provides the advantage of minimising the extent to which intumescent material of the glazing barrier device can penetrate the gap between the glazing pane and the surrounding frame, as opposed to extending across the surface of the glazing pane.
At least one said third body may comprise side regions in which no second intumescent element is located1 separated by a middle region in which a said second intumescent element is located.
This provides the advantage of maximising the extent to which the intumescent material of the barrier device expands across the surface of the glazing panel.
At least one said second intumescent element may have substantially rectangular cross section.
According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a glazing assembly comprising a glazing pane, at least one glazing support, and a glazing barrier assembly as defined above.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only and not in any limitative sense, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: -Figure 1 is side cross sectional view of a glazing assembly embodying the present invention; Figure 2 is a perspective view of a glazing barrier device of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a cross sectional view of the glazing barrier device of Figure 2; Figure 4 is a perspective view of a glazing support device of the assembly of Figure 1; and Figure 5 is a side cross sectional view of the glazing support device of Figure 4.
Referring to Figure 1, a glazing assembly 2 comprises a glazing pane 4 such as a window pane mounted to a frame 6. A glazing support device 8 has a respective flame resistant body 10 of generally rectangular cross section containing a generally rectangular intumescent element 12, and is mounted between an end face 14 of the glazing pane 4 and the frame 6.
Glazing barrier devices 16 each have a respective body 18 of generally rectangular cross section from which three elongate protrusions 20 of tapering cross section extend at an angle to a surface 22 of the body 18. An intumescent element 24 located within the body 18 has a generally rectangular cross section and a protrusion 26 at one end.
Each glazing barrier device 16 is located between the glazing pane and a respective glazing bar 28 such that the protrusions 20 deform on engagement with the surface of the glazing pane 4 to form air chambers 30 between the surface of the window pane 4 and the surface 22 of the body 18. The air chambers 30 resist the passage of heat and smoke from one side of the window pane 4 around the end surface 14 to the other side of the window pane 4.
The operation of the assembly 2 shown in Figure 1 will now be described.
In the case of a fire reaching one side of the window pane 4, the barrier device 16 on that side of the window is heated and if heated to a sufficient extent, intumescence of the intumescent element 24 in the barrier device 16 occurs.
As a result of the asymmetric shape of the intumescent element 24, intumescence of the intumescent element 24 causes the intumescent material to extend upwards as shown in Figure 1 along the surface of the window pane 4. In the event of further extent f fire, intumescence of the intumescent element 12 in the support device 8 can also occur, as a result of which the gap between the end surface 14 of the glazing pane 4 and the barrier devices 16 becomes filled, and the location of the intumescent element 12 of the support device B is such that expansion of the intumescent element 12 urges the intumescent material of the barrier material upwards as shown in Figure 1, to further cover the window pane surface.
It is found that the present invention offers significantly greater resistance to spread of fire than known fire seal devices.
It will be appreciated by persons skilled in the art that the above embodiment has been described by way of example only, and not in any limitative sense, and that various alterations and modifications are possible without departure from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
